We were concerned about our Shih Tzu's vision and made an appointment. AEC treated our Cavvy who has since passed successfully for years and kept his vision. Dr Edwards examined Blue and determined he has perfect vision. She just recommended some OTC eye drops for mucus. A full exam with 3 diagnostic tests is $318. The facilities are clean. We're incredibly thankful for Animal Eye Center for helping our shih tzu during an emergency. It was such a scary situation, and we truly appreciated the care and compassion they showed from start to finish. A special thank you to Dr. Edwards, Candee, and Megan. They were so kind, compassionate, and caring during a very emotional time. Their calmness and the way they treated our shih tzu with such gentleness meant more to me than I can say. When your pet is family, you never forget the people who show up for them with both skill and heart. We're so grateful for the help they gave us and for the kindness they showed every step of the way. Thank you again, Animal Eye Center, Dr. Edwards, Candee, and Megan. Update: Dr. Edwards messaged me and addressed some of the issues I raised in my review but not all of them (including that her medical notes contained some incorrect information that I had to ask them to fix, like I also did with the incorrect spelling of my name). She also offered to have a phone call with me and, if I was then satisfied, said she would appreciate it if I would remove my review because it hurts her business. She then proceeded to say that I will "never be satisfied" because most of my reviews are 1-3 stars. She also said that I degraded them in my review which is completely inaccurate. She also claimed that because I researched my dog's eye condition myself that I claimed it was better and more accurate than her experience and training. I never stated anything remotely to that effect. She's taking a factual account of my experience and rather than taking accountability is trying to justify things and to refer to all of the five star reviews that they've gotten, trying to negate my experience. Now she's dropping me as a client. The front desk is extremely disorganized. They were supposed to email me an intake form in advance of the appointment but didn't (they were surprised when I arrived and hadn't completed it). As a result they hadn't requested his medical records in advance of the appointment. I had to repeat my dog's problem and history even though I had emailed it in advance. The appointment with Dr. Edwards only lasted about five minutes and I didn't feel like I was given that much information about his condition. After arriving home I hadn't received the invoice that was supposed to have been emailed. I requested it and was sent that and his medical file with my last name misspelled and an error in the medical record. read more

They gave us first class treatment. Came in on a weekend for an emergency procedure for my dog, removing a one inch foxtail from her eye. I was concerned that maybe another vet might not properly diagnose the issue. They were already onto the problem and prepared before we arrived. Highly recommend. Had all medication needed on hand. They saved my dog's eye and both of us from a lot more stress. Highly recommend these angels! read more

Dr. Sydney is amazing! I'd highly recommend her and her team to anyone needing her services.

I had such a positive experience at the Animal Eye Center. From the moment we walked in, the customer service was outstanding, everyone was welcoming, organized, and attentive. The doctor gave excellent medical advice, explained everything in a way I could understand, and took the time to answer all my questions. I left feeling confident and cared for, and my pet received top-notch treatment. I also texted after hours fully expecting to hear back on Monday, and I was pleasantly surprised when one of the doctors personally replied that same evening and offered me an appointment for the very next day. That level of care and responsiveness is rare and so appreciated. Highly recommend this team! read more

Unfortunately my French Bulldog puppy is the epitome of a problem child, and had a prolapse (cherry eye) in both eyes. After his vetrinarian gave us a list of local specialists, I called and got an appointment here within 2 weeks. I was so happy with the bedside manner of the staff, especially when discussing anesthesia of a frenchie because I was a nervous wreck. They put my mind to ease and even accepted my Care Credit. The surgery was about 1/2 of what I expected to pay as well, and his eyes look amazing!! Thanks Animal Eye Center!! read more

I didn't get past trying to make an appointment. I gave a brief description of my dog's issue. Then I got.... "It will be $325.00 for the initial exam. Other tests and medications will be extra charge. If you'd like to make an appointment, we require a deposit of $175.00 to hold the appointment for you." There is a 25% discount for new patients but it wasn't offered. I asked about it and the assistant said it would still be $175.00 to hold the appointment. That whole conversation was insulting. I have NEVER been required to pay money to hold an appointment. I understand the need to pay extra for a specialist, but this is not the way to win my confidence. It's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY I booked an appointment with UC Davis. They only charge for the appointment/consultation and no holding fees to get in. I will be charged for the tests needed to make the diagnosis and treatment for my pet. I will not have to pay for 3 mystery tests that my pet may not need. If you have to get a deposit for an appointment, that tells me you must get a lot of cancellations because of your ridiculous policies. read more

I just went in for my visit today and am happy to report everything was top notch. Staff is super friendly and on it. I saw this one star review complaining about leaving a deposit for the appointment. Honestly it gets applied to your visit when you come in so who cares when you spend the money? A few days before or the day of, same thing. I honestly feel that their prices are reasonable for specialty practice I mean I'm sure they do more schooling than normal vets. Over all great experience. read more

Dr Edwards and Dr Gronkiewicz are wonderful doctors! I've been here three times, once with an older cat with cancer in her eye and twice with tiny rescue kittens who were having herpes outbreaks. In all situations, the front desk was so sweet and helpful, the techs were all very knowledgeable and efficient, and the doctors were very caring and thorough in their examination and treatment of the cats. Nobody wants to have a situation that requires a veterinary specialist, but if you do, then we are very lucky to have Animal Eye Center in our community! read more

My Frenchie, Jameson, needed to see an eye specialist before starting Predisone; He had an old eye ulcer and his specialty vet wanted to be sure it had healed, prior to starting meds. I found Animal Eye Center online, and lucked out in getting a quick appointment on a cancellation (please note this was probably a lucky coincidence and shouldn't be expected). Please note, to hold an appointment, you need to pay a deposit. Be prepared at that time !! Jameson saw Dr. Gronkiewicz, who was very nice, VERY thorough! I've never been to an Animal Eye specialist before, so I really didn't know what to expect ... the facility was clean and all of the staff was polite (shout out to Sarah who was great). Jameson's appointment was roughly 30 min., and we had a diagnosis I felt comfortable with. Jameson later returned for an eyelid tumor removal, also with Dr. Gronkiewicz. Animal Eye Center offers Cryopen, which was VERY hard to find in the Sacramento area. It's cheaper and safer than the surgical option, and it's very quick!!! If you're in need of an eye specialist, don't hesitate to book your appointment here! They make a stressful situation a lot less so. Additional information: ** ample parking in the back, so don't bother trying to find street parking :) ** many pet insurance policies reimburse for Opthalmologists! Treatments outside of the checkup themselves are typically covered. Check your policy!!! Specialty treatments get expensive, so it's nice to know you're covered. read more

I brought our dog into Animal Eye Center because he was scratched in the eyelid by our cat. The team handled my dog with care and put a couple of stitches in the eyelid. Animal Eye Center has given excellent care to my kitty since he was just a few months old. He and his litter-mates had to be pulled from their feral mama at just 4 weeks old due to severe upper respiratory infections (URI) which severely affected their eyes. I was the foster mom through their recovery and ended up adopting this kitty, as his condition was one of the worst in the litter and I had instantly bonded to him. He has been in Dr. G's care and she is wonderful! She is so kind, compassionate and knowledgeable about all things eye! I highly recommend bringing your animal here for any eye issues. The doctors and staff are wonderful and the location is great. Thanks Dr. G for your continued help with tending to my precious kitty's eye care! You're the best! read more

I have a 13 year old yorkie named Aston, who experienced an anterior lens luxation, meaning that the fibers that hold his lens in place have basically disintegrated, causing his lens to become displaced into his anterior (front) chamber. Unfortunately, this is the more severe type of luxation (opposed to posterior (back) luxation), as this can lead to further complications such as glaucoma or blockage of fluid drainage. From what our primary veterinarian informed us, in Aston's specific case, given the condition of his lens, he was basically "blind" in this given eye. Our vet referred us to an eye specialist, and we chose AEC after seeing all the great reviews on yelp, and I'm very happy with our decision to trust Dr. Edwards! She is extremely knowledgable and did a great job of establishing positive rapport with us, without trying to "upsell" her services. The primary treatment for his condition would be a lensectomy, or surgical removal of the lens. We were quite hesitant to consent to surgery at first, given Aston's old age and high anxiety. Dr. Edwards was very patient with us and ensured she provided us with comprehensive information to make an informed decision, including all the potential risks and complications associated with the surgery versus declining surgery. She was able to relay the urgency of his condition without coming across as forceful or demanding. She informed us that if Aston underwent surgery, he could very well regain his vision in his eye since his retina was still in seemingly good condition, though he would be farsighted as he would no longer have a lens to properly focus light onto his retina. However, she advised that most dogs adjust well after recovery, and she genuinely seemed confident that Aston's quality of life would improve and that he was healthy enough to undergo the surgery. They provided me with a quote and allowed me to take some time to make a decision. After a couple weeks of contemplation, we agreed to the surgery, which Aston had performed yesterday, and the surgery went well with no complications! We are in the tedious recovery phase which consists of various eye drops up to 6 times/day, some oral meds, and a handful of upcoming recheck appointments. However, the staff here did a great job of clearly providing Aston's post-op care instructions, and they were nice to print out trackers to help us keep track of his medications schedule! What initially seemed like a very intimidating and daunting recovery has become manageable for my husband and me to coordinate. The entire staff here are very professional and competent, and they treated Aston very well! I'm optimistic that Aston will have a smooth recovery! As for the logistical factors - scheduling appointments is a breeze, staff members are easy to get a hold of and they don't have ridiculously long wait times. They have their own parking lot at the back of the building with ample spaces available. Overall, their office is very clean and well managed. read more

We have been here a couple times so far. First visit was to evaluate my dog's eyes and testing. She had a mass growing on both eye lids, pretty common for pugs. We discussed removing the mass and were quoted almost $3k for the surgery. Pretty hefty price tag, we agreed to schedule an appointment as it's truly needed for our baby's eyesight and quality of life. I had called in few days before surgery to discuss what we needed to do pre-opt. They let me know we were quoted for anesthesia, however our dog was not going to need it so the price dropped to $1,200-$1,400 depending on meds we take home. Second visit we came in for the procedure, it was fairly quick. We were out of there within 45 minutes. The total ended up only being $900 and some change. It was nice to see they didn't rip us off, they made a correction and charged the lower amount. Staff was friendly, everyone has a smile on their face. Only complaint I had, their discharge papers and medication bottles had different information, which led me to make 2-3 extra calls to clear things up. I suppose discharge info is different for each patient, maybe eliminating the pre-scripted discharge information would be better as they get pretty busy so the extra calls don't help. Lastly, I don't understand why there is a follow up visit charge after surgery. I read it on the discharge paper and think the follow up visit should be included as we have already paid a few hundred dollars for the procedure itself. I assume they have this printed on their discharge paperwork as others may have had a similar complaint. It's a follow up to make sure things are healing correctly. When I go in for a follow up after a surgery myself, the doctor has never charged for a second visit. This is pretty similar to that and leads to some frustration. All in all, I am happy with the facility and staff, just minor complaints which is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. If your fur babies have any eye issues, I highly recommend this place. read more

Very helpful about returning my calls and answering my concerns. Also my cat is doing great!

This post is long over due! My beloved French Bulldog Tank has been under Dr. Sydney Edwards care for some time now. She first took care of ulcers in both eyes and then another situation with drops. She was right on to the day as to when he would be feeling better and always made us feel like he was the most special Frenchie along with the rest of the staff. I believe she saved his eye sight and I could not recommend her more! After hearing of his recent passing, she even sent a hand written note to us in the mail. We cannot express how much that meant to us. Thank you, Dr. Edwards for everything! read more

Dr. Gronkiewicz performed my dog's eye surgery last summer and I was grateful for hers and AEC's expert care. I hated thinking of my dog under anesthesia, but I knew her quality of life would be much better with the eye dermoid removal. After the surgery we were sent home with some meds to keep my pup comfortable, and she did not seem to be in pain, just sleepy the first evening. Keeping an active dog in a "cone" and trying to prevent her from jumping and running for a few weeks was a huge challenge, but ultimately worth it for healing. My dog also required a few different eye drop meds at different times of the day post procedure, so it can be a labor of love helping your dog recover from surgery. Overall I appreciate that this type of Veterinary specialty is available in our community & I am happy with the expert care of Dr. G, the follow up care, and all of the staff at AEC for taking such great care of my dog. read more

We brought our 6 year old red iguana into the office, as there was not a veterinary ophthalmologist in our area that sees exotics. The staff and the doctor were AMAZING with him. They were gentle, patient and understanding that he might be stressed out. What I also loved about them is that they were honest and didn't push for surgery when it wasn't needed. We also almost left without a significant amount of our change and they ran outside to bring it to us. They came up with a treatment plan and explained everything clearly to us. We all want to take our babies to doctors that are going to provide them the best care and who want the best for them just like we do and this place is it. I went in to get my dogs eyes examined today 1/18/2024 by Dr. Edwards. Her and her staff are very friendly and caring. The costs are in the triple digit price range, but for what that includes, it's worth the price. Now for the negative. I'm not happy with having to have had to submit the new patient form TWICE, I don't think it submitted successfully after I had done it at home through the link provided in the appointment confirmation email they sent out, so they had me resubmit it when I had checked in my dog for her appointment. But that sort of thing is bound to happen from time to time. Their parking lot isn't accessible from both streets that they share a corner with, so that's the downside to the location where the office is located. But other than that, I'm happy with the way they treated me and my furry four legged friend. read more

I was in tears of relief on our way home that she was finally being taken care of. Outstanding service with curbside check in and iPads to video call with the doctor during the visit. This made it possible for me to wait with my toddler in the car and I'm so grateful. Every time I see her now with her healthy healed eye I am so happy we made the choice to bring her here. I've been coming to this location for a while my dog has glaucoma and needed an emergency visit that took me a month to get in for. Upon arrival 20 min before my appointment they asked me why I was driving ? I told her a purple challenger she said it would be 15-20 min. So with that being said I called at 1:40 and asked how long it would be she stated another 10 min. I told her I needed to go back to work and could they hurry . At 2 a girl came out and said it wouldn't be much longer but they wrote my car down as a PT cruiser and she couldn't find me . She asked me to walk my dog to the front door because she's blind and probably wouldn't go with her. I told her okay and that o had checked in at 1:10 why was it so long . She said that she had been busy with emergencies . We walked to the front slowly with my dog . We get to the front and then she says oh I need your card , I told her that sucked she could have asked me to get it before Leaving the car . She the. Accused me of saying fuck you which told her again I said this sucks why didn't you tell me you wanted my card in advance I was going to pay with care credit she said t y don't take it I need a MC one . I said that's fine I have another card I can use. She then handed me an iPad that was not sanitized had finger marked all over it she was carrying from another client and stated the Dr will face time you . The. She came back out with my card and said we will see you for free today but don't ever come back here and pushed my card in my hand . I said why because of your mistakes and she walked off. Now they have my dog and I am outside with no contact about my dog which I am pretty sure is going to need an injection lol for free. We will See how that goes. Lol The old staff used to be friendly and on time . I miss the old Dr and lolas vet tech. Now I will have to find a new eye specialist and start all over again. She's 15 these people don't care about your pet Go somewhere better With a mask on be careful what you accuse people of this lady is a Karen and had the haircut to go along with it ! Should be no stars for today's visit ! But it only slows 1 its now hit an hour and 20 min to be been here ! Just to be clear I never used profanity with the receptionist she's an idiot and couldn't even get my car right purple challenger and PT cruiser sound nothing alike . The only thing I said to your receptionist was this is a crappy way to do business. No profanity Karen on the other hand was rude and tried to hand me back my dog when I didn't have my credit card in hand at your back door before my dog was even seen . She was acting like I didn't have any money . I told her she sucked and she could have asked me for my card at the car. She then said I told her fuck you which I did not. But now she can ! You are a really bad business owner and as I told you when you came to my car with Lola I never asked you to do it for free even though I had to wait an hour and a half past my appointment . I have my card to Karen that then shoved it back in my hand and told me not to come back . No problem. Sound like you have more compliant ma about her than just me .
