This place is primarily a steak place, though they have a few other things to choose from as well. I believe lunch times they offer a AYCE sort of option, where you get a main and then the salad bar is buffet. I've been to it before and it's pretty good. I've heard however since COVID they have changed it somewhat. The other night I came and got the seafood guazzetto, which is about $300 HKD, and has a bunch of different things such as fish, octopus, clams, etc. Lots of seafood essentially. Other things I tried included the sides of brussel sprouts, mushrooms, bruschetta, some of my brother's sirloin steak, some of the fish of the day (halibut?). Overall, the food is quite nice. I will say, they tend to use a bit too much butter/oil here. I know this is kind of true whenever you eat out, but here it is definitely noticeable. We shared the florentina (aka the porterhouse. A 32oz wagyu beast) and a filet. The meats came on a cutting board already cut, so the sharing was easy. They were perfectly seasoned, tender, and flavorful. We had roasted veggies and creamed spinach as sides. The latter was addictive! Chef Todd was around to explain their meat selection when I walked around to check them out in the case. We didn't get to send our regards to him, as we stayed late and were the last to leave. Todd, if you're reading this, hail to the chef! We went without a reservation and were seated right away. It was a Thursday night, but we had gotten there around 9 which might explain the vacancy. I enjoyed this dish. The arugula is salted nicely and the veal had a nice color and was cooked nicely. Didn't have that gamey taste that sometimes comes with veal. The crispy onions added some nice texture to this dish. Overall successful dish but not out of this world. The main course was a seafood spaghetti. The amount of seafood was generous and included, shrimp, squid, fish, and brocollini . The sauce is a light and really relies on the freshness of the seafood to flavor this dish. The pasta was cooked a bit under for my liking. Some may say this is al dente but I prefer my pasta a little bit more well done. Surely there should be an old Chinese proverb that says, "Don't judge a dai pai dong by its dingy…read morerestaurant facade." ABC...stands for A Better Cooking kitchen. This name is lame compared to what we discovered when we dined there this week. We had heard the the hype around our Sheung Wan hood, but ABC was against the grain of what were expecting. I felt my mind was being challenged against my expectation of what I would experience and also being BLOWN at every turn. If you told a Hong Konger that you had the greatest Italian restaurant experience inside a dai pai dong, they would look at you and say "you are wrong...dai pai dong's don't have Italian food" They would be thinking, "silly white girl, she does not know what she is talking about." And when you say again, "no really, red and white checker table clothes, wine list, pastas, etc", they would probably look at you again like you had things confused in your mind on what a dai pai doing was. Now granted that the popular suckling pig ($178HKD) is not really an Italian item to be found on most Italian restaurant menus, the remaining items on the menu are really quite nice and might apply authentically to a true Italian dinner table. Pesto pasta ($148HKD), pan-fried foie gras w/chutney ($128HKD), beef carpaccio ($88HKD) , creme brulee ($48HKD). My husband had the suckling pig and said it was different than your standard Chinese version of suckling pig. He indicated that the meat was more tender, like almost a pulled port consistency. We enjoyed the foie gras as an appetizer and were almost left speechless..."am I really eating foie gras of this caliber in a dai pai dong?" MIND BLOWN! I had the pesto pasta and the pasta was cooked perfectly and was really a surprise to my palette. Good quality noodle, good preparation, steaming hot to the table. MIND BLOWN! The restaurant itself is in a dai pai dong setting, with tables butting up against tables for a Chinese place, a dumpling spot, a Vietnamese place and an Indian restaurant. The environment is clean, but clustered. The red and white table clothes will give it away on where you are going once you ascend the moving escalator from the street (across from the 7-11 on that corner) up to the dai pai dong. My head keeps thinking, how is the local gem (really kind of a hot spot, for it was really busy) even here in this chaotic dai pai dong environment. MIND BLOWN! The wine list kind of sucks, but the fact that you are sitting in a dai pai dong and there is actually a wine list, your head is still kind of spinning and I did not care that I was drinking at sub-par chianti. MIND BLOWN! They even have a larger liquor license with Gordon's Gin and Absolut Vodka on their menu! MIND BLOWN! We were greeted by the most friendly, older host/waiter. He was happy to serve us. No turn and burn mentality of a dining experience here. MIND BLOWN! They are speaking decent English and it was easy to communicate, even when my husband was not chiming in with Cantonese. They take reservations. WHAT? This is a wolf in sheeps clothing for certain. What dai pai dong setting takes a resy? MIND BLOWN!
