The atmosphere is certainly dated, at least late 70s to mid 80s, and the place is showing its age. Food came out in good order but my friend sandwich had stale chips with way too much seasoning, and my other friend had a long hair under her mashed potatoes and hot roast beef. It was corrected quickly. The rest of our party enjoyed the salads, steak, battered haddock and steamed shrimp. Overall the meal was just ok. I was staying at the hotel next door. Didn't want to drive after a long day. Saw lots of good reviews, so figured why not. I wish I chose to drive... I ordered their prime rib dinner...a friday/Saturday special. OMG...THE worst I've ever eaten. I never knew medium rare prime rib could be tougher than chuck steak. This one was. Plain aweful.and the sautéed mushrooms compounded it. Sautéed with thyme...well a pinch is ok, but it seemed like the cooked spilled the box. Could hardly taste anything else. I will say that the server was wonderful. She offered to exchange it for something else but I really wasn't in the mood to wait. She did offer a free dessert and did reduce my final bill. I gave her a full tip. She was wonderful. The fried cheesecake was a cheesecake filling inside a tortilla type wrap, crispy outside topped with some caramelly sauce and whipped cream. It was ok. Interior is a very dated 1970's decor. So bottom line... Probably stick to the burgers if you don't want to drive after settling in at the hotel. I hear those are pretty good. read more

Tony and I had dinner tonight at the Angus and Ale. First let me say they won our business by default...they are located in the same parking lot as our hotel. We had to wait to be seated because they were understaffed. Their hours are only 4-8pm...so not a lot of wiggle room there. We ordered Half/Half Tea with lemon and lime and he got a Budweiser. He decided to get the Steamed Shrimp in Old Bay Seasoning, Green Beans and sweet potato fries. I went light a cup of their Stuffed Pepper Soup and side salad. They brought us a bucket of hot rolls with side of butter and Homemade Apple Butter....very good by the way!!! The apple butter that is!!!! I loved my soup and waitress very attentive and kept me in tea refills. Not crazy about the salad...but it was exactly what I ordered Side Salad...with 1000 Island Dressing. Tony loved his steamed shrimp but the green beans and sweet potato fries were not so good!!! I wouldn't have to go back but Hey Good News, your experience might be better than mine!! The waitress was kind. But the service up was under par, as they were switching up the dinner service and after she told us she would bring us boxes she attended to to-go orders and took 20 minutes to give us our check. Their deep fried bacon a little dry but was good our fried bacon, bourbon cornbread hamburger was just ok and the upgraded bacon cheese fries we ordered came out soggy and we couldn't eat them. Excellent food, good service, and reasonable prices. This is our go to place when we want to go out to dinner or if we have out of town guests. The atmosphere is casual. The kind of place that you can take a large group and not worry about the kids being too noisy. We like to start with the Portobello and the deep fried bacon. Then on to steak, or prime rib for my wife, and shrimp alfredo for myself. We've been going to Angus & Ale for years and I don't think we have ever been disappointed with the food or service. They also have several local craft beers, and an excellent all you can eat Soup & Salad bar on weekends. Our favorite sit-in restaurant in Berkeley Springs. read more

Happened to be traveling and staying in Berkeley Springs and wanted to stop for a bite at Angus & Ale. We had previously stopped here and always found the restaurant to be a step above with a nice relaxing atmosphere. Neither my hubs or I were too hungry so decided on sandwiches for this stop. Hubs had a big juicy burger with cheese, lettuce and tomato. I had a delicious smothered grilled chicken with bacon and cheese sandwich. Both were served with a tasty pickle and we both added hand cut fries seasoned to perfection. As we were finishing our meal, my hubs mentioned to our nice waitress that we were traveling to visit family and this was was our 49th wedding anniversary. A few moments later our waitress surprised us with a lovely dish of ice cream, pastry, whipped cream with drizzled caramel. It was just so special. We were very appreciative and surprised. She said the chef prepared it. It was extremely thoughtful as well as delicious. I greatly thank the chef, waitress and staff for their kind gesture. Thank you! read more

Sunday night dinner over Columbus Day weekend - We went in at about 6, and there were 5 of us. It took us about 20 minutes of waiting to be seated, though the restaurant seemed empty. Once seated, it seemed like forever until the server found time to come by our table. After ordering, it again took a long time for our food to arrive. Speaking of the food, our meals were undercooked, and the quality was not very good in general, even for bar food. The place was on the quiet side, which allowed us to maintain a comfortable conversation, instead of shoutine.It also took a while for the check to arrive. I got fries with my burger. My wife's wide was pork rinds. They were very good. I think they had old bay on them. This place falls between 2 and 3. There are some basic things that are difficult to overlook to bump it up to a 3. After a long day of outdoor activities, we went here for a bite. Kids ordered shrimp. They arrived with shells on. What? Why!? A lot of kids would be turned off by the idea of seeing their shrimp like that and having to peel them. Everything arrived at the same time. Not the end of the world, but if things are taking more than 20 minutes, which they definitely did, the meals for kids should have been prepared first. Instead we had kids that were complaining about how long things were taken. Almost all the food was underseasoned. Fries, au jus, even the prime rib. I thought maybe it was just me but my wife came to the same conclusion. The fries, which they boast are hand cut and cooked in house were mooshy. The fries the kids had were nice and crispy. Consistency needs improvement. It seemed like they had one waitress taking care of everything. Drinks? Check. Lotto? Check. Orders? Check. Bills? Check. She was running around the entire time trying her best to stay on top of things, but it was too much. None of the other employees were nearly as busy as she was, making me wonder what they were doing. You all walked by me, avoided eye contact with me, and ignored me. It was clear no one wanted to wait on me. After ten minutes of being ignored, I asked the blond waitress if I could get someone to wait on me. She put me off basically and then waited on the 8 top who came in after me. Had the prime rib and rib eye (two meals). The meat portions were gigantic! Literally, the prime rib was a 3.5" thick and 7" long and prepared perfectly. Lots of out of towners come here and pass hard judgement. They come from big cities and buy vacation houses and travel into town expecting a big city restaurant experience. I come here for atmosphere, friendliness off staff, beer, and alligator. Beer, good. Alligator, good. Friendliness of staff, excellent. People wanting to drop over $100 on dinner can go to Lot 12. I, on the other hand, will go to Angus and Ale to see people I know, eat comfort food, and have a comfortable experience. As a previous reviewer stated, you have to MapQuest this place to find it as it's snuggled up next to a hotel on a hill. But that's where the difficulty ends. Our party of 4 ordered 3 streaks and a burger. Each was cooked to perfection! Everything else was perfect from the salads (better than most dressings!) to the last bite. But honorable mention goes to the portobello "fries". OMG they're amazing! Especially with the jalapeno dip! Yum! And the onion/mushroom addition to the steak was freshly made and not one of those gravied messes. We will definitely add this as one of our destination places! After a friend told me how great this place was, I decided my son and I would check it out. I got a bacon cheeseburger (bacon was breaded and deep fried) and my sone got steamed shrimp with old bay and fries. The shell was still on the shrimp so he had to work at it a little bit, but over all the food was pretty good. The prices were fair as well. Unfortunately the service was not great. Maybe next time will be better Update.. Second visit was another disappointment. They were fully staffed and there was only 4 customers including my daughter and myself. It took quite some time to get a cheeseburger and a crab cake sandwich delivered to our table. The server was pleasant (when she came to our table.) The staff was busy cleaning up from buffet brunch (it was around 3 p.m.) while they were cleaning they were discussing personal disputes at volume.. just seems like the staff doesn't care. Food wasn't horrible though, I guess that's the positive in this story.. Side note: The place is grimy, silverware had remnants from the last diner on it.. Was looking for a new place to try for dinner and found this place on Yelp. We were both pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed our meal! We started with the crab dip, which is some of the best we have had, and both had ribs for dinner. In between they served us a bucket of hot, fresh cornbread, something my husband won't normally eat, and it was perfect! Super moist and we polished off the bucket. Our main course, the ribs, were fall off the bone and had so much meat my husband couldn't finish his full rack (which never happens ). Don't waste your money! We went there last night with friends; got there at 5pm and there were only a few others there. We all ordered cream of crab soup, two in our party ordered prime rib, one ordered the crab cake dinner and I ordered the ahi tuna. The soup was awful. There was a teeny-tiny bit of inferior crab in it as well as onions and green peppers and it was completely tasteless. If that wasn't enough, all four cups were lukewarm at best. The chef/cook needs to find a new recipe. My hubby said his prime rib was spiced differently and it was good but his meat and baked potato were not hot. Our neighbor also ordered the prime rib but his was excessively fatty. He also said his meal was not even warm. His wife ordered a crab cake with baked potato. She said her crab cake had a lot filler in it and her baked potato was not warm. I got the ahi tuna over a seaweed salad. My tuna was tasty as was the seaweed salad but the sauce over it was something poured from a jar. Seriously, it's not hard to make a ginger-soy dipping sauce. Although the place was decorated in a festive manner, when I see the name "Angus & Ale", I immediately think of a cozy ale house or pub type of establishment. This place was more like a pared down Hoss's ... no atmospheric and sterile feeling. I gave this two stars. We waited over an hour to get our meals which just isnt okay. Gluten free choices are very limited, but our server was diligent in checking sauces and ingredients-much appreciated! Portions are generous. Ribs were ok, corn on the cob was way over-cooked. Salad bar and buffet was depleted and not restocked. There is definitely room for improvement but we will be back.
