As far as the locally owned places in Tacoma go, the chicken here is the best. I prefer breasts and the crust is crunchy, the meat is juicy. They give you honey to pour on it and their jojo wedges are served with sour cream. They have great pies and now they have cinnamon rolls. Their sandwiches look nice to going by what another table had and they are served nicely cut and presented in an aesthetically pleasing manner. I don't usually see jojos in diners - those huge wedge fries. They're well done here. You can get the chicken to go. Second: PIE. They have a big rotating case with treats! Great, old school menu with all the diner classics. My mother - who doesn't like dives - really enjoyed her food here. Eating here recently after a couple of years away, I thought of all the diners/dives/food/travel shows out there on pay cable. (perhaps this is the motivation for the only other Yelp reviewer I noticed for Anglea's, who - kudos for honesty - gave it 2-stars because they let their chicken sit until it was cold before trying it) They serve things other than fried chicken, pies, and SOS gravy here, and it's all good homestyle American fare - but I'd go out of my way for the chicken. This is the best fried chicken in Washington State. Certainly, if you put it up against this great nation - it would have some real competition. However, If you've ever thought to yourself "I'd like some biscuits and gravy, but I'm in Washington now, so I'd better try something else", this place is for you. This is red-checkered booths, homemade pie, and a meal so simple-perfect you won't forget it. As a man who scoffs at the "this meal feeds up to 3 people" claims on any menu, I can say that you could order a $6.95 2-breast Chicken & Jo-Jos meal, with a half-order of biscuits and gravy ($2.95 - yes, get the S.O.S. gravy), and share a satisfying meal with somebody else who is new to this place. You'll need pie. Also, bring somebody you'd like to converse with, because it will take 45 minutes for your food. Realizing that I had said "Ann-jel-lee-ah's" for years without knowing if it was correct, I finally asked this last time. I got something along the lines of "Honey, it's not Italian. This is an old diner that hasn't changed much in decades. Today I had some yummy cinnamon French Toast that has super cinnamony swirls that tasted kind of like Cinnabon. The side of bacon was perfectly crisp. And, I love that they gave me my own pot of coffee. One thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is seeing "Freedom Toast" and "Freedom Fries" on the menu. My fried chicken here was off the charts, very good, tasty, huge portions and cooked perfectly. Though this place is a total dive, The attention we received from waitstaff was exemplary. Maybe she saw me yelping, or maybe she really just did her job like waitstaff is supposed to do. Either way, the place looks and smells like it was put up before calendars were invented. The roof is caving in, the seats need some major love and it smells like some place your Grandma might take you for some "special" time together. In-fact, that's how I know about this place. Shhh. don't tell anyone. My Grandma actually did bring me here for some special time together. Regardless of how I got here, all hungry readers need to know is that YOU want to eat this chicken! That's really it. I can't say much for other things on the menu because Granny got some stale green beans from a can on her plate and a dinner roll you could use as a hockey puck. As far as my target meal of fried chicken was concerned, I didn't need a lavish environment to enjoy it. A serious upgrade would be very wise for marketing as the place was pretty empty during a dinner service. If you need help with marketing, call me. Great family operated joint. Came in here as a group on New Years Eve. The menu is american fare and all of it was very good and well priced! My fiance and I couldn't decide between the chicken strips and the veal, so we did what any indecisive couple would do...ordered both and split each in half. Chicken Strip Basket - Chicken was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. The Jo's were fantastic and hands down the best I have ever had! Veal Dinner - It has been probably 25 years since I have eaten veal, so my knowledge on this matter isn't the best. (When you are 10 and find out a little baby animal is on your plate, you don't always look forward to eating it again lol). Anyway, we thought it was cooked well but again, don't have a lot to compare it to. It came with a side salad, veggies and a potato option for $12.95. We went with the hashbrowns, but by the time we ate the salad, veal, chicken strips and jos I was full so I sadly didn't even touch the veggies or hashbrowns. I bought a slice of pie to go because they had blackberry pie and I am a complete sucker for piping hot blackberry pie on a cold night. The pie was probably the only thing that wasn't great...don't get me wrong, pie is kinda like sex, even bad pie is still appetizing....but I've had better at LOTS of places, so I removed a star for the lack of enthusiasm about their pie. It seemed to me that there was no actual BERRIES and it was all a blackberry jam substance...tasted like blackberries without the yummy whole blackberries I like to see in my pies. The service was spot on and the waitress did an excellent job keeping us all pleased with our many requests....nobody seemed to be on the same page as to condiments, but she was super nice about it and quick to get everything we needed. I can't recall the last time we were served hot fresh home cooking!The chicken was the best in Washington we've had yet. Moist, crunchy without being greasy the JoJo's were amazing with that signature sour cream sauce. The apple pie was flaky with great flavor. To boot the owner was seating, cooking and cleaning up. Though they were short-staffed they got our food out with a smile and answered our questions about the restaurant. The best part is they do buckets of chicken to go that are cheaper than the run-of-the-mill drive-thrus. This will be our official go to chicken joint. It ended up just being so-so because even though they cook the fried chicken from scratch when you order it, we were running late so the chicken was cold by the time we got there. Decided to visit while in Tacoma based mostly on the fact that it had been featured on diners drive-ins and dives. I went with my family of 4, 3 of us had the fried chicken and one had grilled chicken. All came with soup or salad and choice of potatoes. The salad was lackluster, clearly straight from the bag, the soup most certainly frozen or canned. The fried chicken was ok, I've had better out of my mom's kitchen for sure. The mashed potatoes were reconstitued and covered in fairly standard country gravy. All meals came with canned green beans. The jo jos were the best part of my meal, tasted fresh and cut into nice thick wedges. The service was prompt and courteous. Over all it was fairly standard, nothing overtly offensive, but certainly nothing I'm dying to come back for. read more

The food here has really gone downhill. They used to make an excellent chicken fried steak, but now it's just some sad cut of cheap beef, breaded and served with canned gravy on it. Next to it sat a small bowl of something salty and green which I finally identified as green beans, but all I could taste was the can. Add to this a stale roll and some "Freedom Fries" which weren't cooked all the way and you have a luncheon fit for the garbage can. All of this was served with a smile and plenty of good, hot coffee, so maybe there's still hope. I'll visit again in a couple of weeks and update this if it was just a bad day or something. I do find it rather offensive that they are still calling them "Freedom Fries" and "Freedom Toast". Based on a friends recommendation, I placed an order for 2 dozen biscuits to be warmed up and ready for pick-up at 6:15. Because traffic was bad, I arrived at 6:20 to discover my order was never placed by the owner. To add insult to injury the owners daughter was unsympathetic un apologetic and straight up rude to me basically stating that i arrived 5 minutes late and that her father apologized. No discount for their error. But definitely short coming on her customer service. Because of this, I arrived late to my event having to wait for the biscuits that were cold and not heated. What a huge disappointment. I work in customer service. And this is one opportunity that AngleAs could have made this bad situation better and created a customer instead of bad reviews and a lost opportunity for creating a loyal customer. read more

Went there with a friend for the first time for breakfast. The first thing I noticed was how dirty the exterior of the building, the windows, door and walkup was. Upon sitting down, we both noticed that the silverware had a dull film and did not look very clean. The condiment bottles on the table looked like they had not been cleaned in years, with a lot of grease and fingerprints from hundreds of past guest on them. Very unappetizing. The tabletop was pretty clean in front of the seats, but obviously has only been wiped in that area. The surface near the filthy condiment tray was also filthy and sticky. The water served had a chemical or soap taste to it. Now for the simple breakfast. I ordered eggs over medium because I can't stomach runny eggs; they came with runny egg yoke and had an odd odor to them. The pancakes were OK, but unremarkable. The bacon appeared to have been precooked in advance. It was dry and lacking flavor. With how dirty the owner keeps the part of the restaurant you can see is, I have to wonder what the standards are in the back where you can't see. I don't want to know and so will not risk dining there again. I know this establishment has fallen on some hard times due to a recent fire, but there is absolutely no excuse for not keeping the premises clean. read more
