It is decorated in a French theme and has a lot of charm throughout. We were lucky enough to stay in the room adjacent to the sitting room. It was very spacious and had a huge bathroom with a claw foot tub and pedestal sink. The locations of the French House is also great. It is in a historic part of Wilmington and taking a walk around the neighborhood shows how rich in history this part of town is. It is also walking distance (4 blocks) from the river and a quick 15 minute ride to Wilmington Beach. What makes The French House 5 stars is that it is run by a wonder hostess, Janice. She is kind and accommodating to her guests' needs. We arrived and found a fruit plate and mini refrigerator stocked with waters and soda. She gave us maps of downtown and recommendations of where to eat. She knew our names before we even introduced ourselves and always made us feel at home. When I burned my feet at the beach, she searched high and low for some aloe, even making phone calls to neighbors to find some. The breakfasts she provided always included some fresh berries, yogurts, homemade scones, and some sort of pastry (one day we had croissants, one day we had blueberry strudel). My only wish is that there were some kind of protein provided! We had a truly wonderful stay here at the French House. My only complaint was the other guest that was staying there at the same time as us...she had a guest stay late one night and rather than sitting on the front porch or in her room, she sat in the sitting room right in front of our room and kept us up for a good portion of the night. However, I will still give this place 5 stars because Janice and the house itself were excellent. We will be back :)

But, what I appreciated the most, was the attention to detail. I don't think the owner (Janice, I believe) could have done a better job. A charming gem in the heart of Wilmington. A thumbs up from me.

There is no official front desk, so we spoke with the people at the stand by the parking lot, and they were able to share information and assist bringing my parents' bags to their room, up a flight of stairs. There's a small sitting area on the balcony outside the rooms, and each room has its own unique decor. We love the eye for detail and design. Our room is The Hamptons, with two double beds and a separate room with TV and sitting area and desk (though it is open to the bedroom because no doors exist in the doorway; it would be cool if they had sliding doors to separate the spaces). The bar downstairs is lively and fun with amazing cocktails and a few small bite options, and it operates from the backyard yard of the Inn, so be prepared for a bit of noise from that and the street to filter into the room especially on weekends. This bar doubles as the Concord Espresso House that serves amazing espresso drinks and pastries in the morning. The indoor seating is low key elegant, a great spot to sit and start your morning.

(Definitely stop into the Fortunate Glass, a wine bar located just a couple of blocks down.) Innkeeper Fran is a bundle of welcoming hospitality. The check-in process is as friendly and informative as it gets. The suites have a comfy couch; a kitchenette with sink, microwave, mini-fridge, and dishes/utensils; a decent-sized bathroom with good water volume; and a sleeping area upstairs with a ceiling fan. I found the bed to be quite comfortable. There's a shared patio with a river view out back and an icemaker in the hall for common use. No food or drinks are available on-site, but there's a great convenience market around the corner with anything you might need for the room. Just a few things to know: --If you absolutely must have a silent environment, you may run into a few issues. Noise from the hallway is audible in the rooms, but thankfully guests seem to abide by the quiet hours and there wasn't any guest noise later in the evening. Also, there are a couple of nightclubs nearby and (on the weekends at least), there was some music carryover noise. --The only TV is upstairs in the sleeping loft; there is not one in the living/sitting area. --Parking is by permit in a lot about a 90-second walk away. You won't have an assigned space, but I didn't have any problems getting one. --No daily housekeeping, but there is a basket with a checklist you can place outside your door if you need something replenished. This beats any chain hotel experience and has more of a bed-and-breakfast sort of vibe, only with no breakfast and a very different architectural set-up.

Perfect location for a walkable weekend in Wilmington!…read more We stayed in the Inchochine room. It was cozy and fun to live back in time for the weekend. Staying in this historic home brought magic to exploring the quaint town of Wilmington. The BnB is run by a husband, wife and son who welcomed and provided recommendations of activities. We walked the riverwalk through downtown to the Cotton Exchange to shop the local art and goods. We enjoyed dinner at Oliverio, cocktails and apps at Rumcow, night caps at Concord Espresso Martini Bar, and live music at Rebellion. We drove further to sunbathe at the beaches, walk trails at Greenfield Lake Park, and smell the flowers at Airlie Gardens. The BnB offers a daily breakfast. It was well balanced and had something for everyone. French toast, sausage patty, hash brown egg casserole, and fresh fruit with yogurt. One day there was a baked cinnamon apple tart and it was to die for! Breakfast beverages included cranberry juice, OJ, coffee and water. Note, the parking lot is a little tricky to maneuver but there's also plenty of street parking as an alternative. Great thing is that you can walk all weekend not worrying about driving. Definitely will stay again next time in Wilmington!

Trisha, the wife/owner, came inside our room in a panic saying she heard the toilet running. Okay...yes it was, but do you need to wake up customers spending over $250 a night with you? She left and said, "sorry" on the way out. I wasn't able to fall back asleep until about 730am, causing me to miss breakfast. My girlfriend, who did actually get some sleep and was able to attend breakfast, said Tricia mentioned, "my husband would be so upset with me if he was here." I guess that's an apology, though she was nowhere to be seen the next morning and I didn't get an apology. I did get a to-go bag with a yogurt, a banana, and a coffee. No hot breakfast. Adding a star because there is free street parking out front.

Page and Larry are warm and hospitable without being solicitous or sappy. (We avoid B and Bs because solicitous/sappy hosts make us uncomfortable). We rented two rooms and both were great -- very comfortable beds, fridges in each stocked with drinks, and nice bathrooms. The house is on a somewhat busy street but it was completely quiet inside, even in the street-facing room. Breakfast is terrific. I was about to rate Hoge Wood four stars -- everything was just right, and I like to reserve five stars for something that really blows me away, a once-in-several-years sort of thing. But my nine year old son just looked over my shoulder and said "Dad -- why four stars?" He insisted on five (which is something, since he was initially upset that we weren't stopping at a traditional hotel). Oh, one of the reasons we chose Hoge Wood is that they only have three rooms. We didn't want to stay in a place with lots of other people. We stopped in Wilmington to break up a long trip that we normally do in one day. We don't need to stop, but this worked so well I'm sure we'll be back every year.

Respected our privacy, but were also very engaging when we sought conversation. Obviously, being in the historic district, it is an old house...with all the charms and negatives that come with an old house. Poor insulation (room was a little cold), old/settled floors (our bathroom floor was uneven), and of course, difficulty with WIFI access. We could not get WIFI in our room and had to go down to the living room to pick up signal. Which is OK....but we wanted to watch a Netflix movie before bed. I would recommend they advertise that WIFI is available in the common areas only....or get a second router/wifi booster. Breakfast was at 0830....kind of early for a weekend stay..... Had that unusual awkwardness walking into the dining room to sit down and eat with people you don't know.....but, as has always been the case for us, the other guests were extremely friendly and we had a great time. Pecan waffles were excellent, with perfectly cooked bacon. Page sat down with us after all the food was out and we all had nice conversation. Finally, Hoge Wood House is one of the few, maybe only, B&Bs in this area that allow kids under 12. THM (Take Home Message): Very warm and inviting hosts in Larry and Page. Walking distance to downtown. Excellent breakfast. Allow children under 12 y/o. Wished WiFi worked in the guest rooms. $160 per night. Probably more expensive in peak season. Still cheaper than Holiday Inn Resort at Wrightsville Beach.

We called a couple of B&B's, and based on the phone conversations, we decided to check out Port City Guest House.. As soon as we walked in the house I knew it was going to be a place my girlfriend was going to want to stay. She loves old houses, decorated with a Victorian style flare, the house was beautiful. We were greeted by the owner of the B&B Sophie, she was so friendly and very accommodating, we loved her, and the house and booked for 2 nights. Sophie went way out of her way to make us feel at home. She asked us what we like to eat, not just for breakfast, but just about everything. I think she was even disappointed the first night to find out we went out to a pub and ate some Pizza, I think she wanted to make us dinner.
