This is a really distinctive and memorable place to stay with a can't-be-beat location. The suites aren't enormous, but they feel much more spacious than they are thanks to smart furniture placement, high ceilings, and soaring windows that look onto great views of the river area and Front St. The Riverwalk is less than two minutes away on foot, and there are dozens of nice shops, restaurants, and lounges within a five-minute walking radius. (Definitely stop into the Fortunate Glass, a wine bar located just a couple of blocks down.) Innkeeper Fran is a bundle of welcoming hospitality. The check-in process is as friendly and informative as it gets. The suites have a comfy couch; a kitchenette with sink, microwave, mini-fridge, and dishes/utensils; a decent-sized bathroom with good water volume; and a sleeping area upstairs with a ceiling fan. I found the bed to be quite comfortable. There's a shared patio with a river view out back and an icemaker in the hall for common use. No food or drinks are available on-site, but there's a great convenience market around the corner with anything you might need for the room. Just a few things to know: --If you absolutely must have a silent environment, you may run into a few issues. Noise from the hallway is audible in the rooms, but thankfully guests seem to abide by the quiet hours and there wasn't any guest noise later in the evening. Also, there are a couple of nightclubs nearby and (on the weekends at least), there was some music carryover noise. --The only TV is upstairs in the sleeping loft; there is not one in the living/sitting area. --Parking is by permit in a lot about a 90-second walk away. You won't have an assigned space, but I didn't have any problems getting one. --No daily housekeeping, but there is a basket with a checklist you can place outside your door if you need something replenished. This beats any chain hotel experience and has more of a bed-and-breakfast sort of vibe, only with no breakfast and a very different architectural set-up. read more

What a super cute place to stay at! Highly recommend this place!!!! Fran is a sweetheart. She made our stay 10 times better. Her hospitality was amazing. We stayed there for my brother's wedding, who got married at the venue attached to this inn. The rooms were cute, comfortable, Ac worked great, beds were nice, and the shower pressure was amazing. I would definitely stay there again. They also cleaned up the honeymoon suite and made it extra special for the bride and groom after we used the room to get ready for the wedding with the bride. I have been staying at Stemmermans off and on for years. I like the homey feel, spacious rooms and love the location. My most recent stay in May was especially enjoyable thanks to the welcoming and efficient inn keeper, Fran. She greeted us on the street to be sure we knew where to park, gave us a check in tour and made suggestions of where to eat and drink nearby. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights and just checked out today (Labor Day). We didn't want to leave! What a wonderful place in a great location! The River Walk is just steps away. We had suite #4. It was pretty, clean, and comfortable! It also had a nice view of the river and battleship. Mr. Michael was great with keeping in touch before our stay, especially since we were a bit concerned about the tropical storm. He is super friendly and eager to make all his guests comfortable. He let us know ahead of time that it could be noisy due to the wedding venue next door and/or the local bars, but it was not a problem at all. I love that he mentioned it ahead of time as a courtesy. I would recommend Stemmerman's to anyone looking for a great place to stay in the Wilmington area. read more

I stay here every year when I am in Wilmington. The inn is located downtown and you can walk anywhere. The rooms are very comfortable and stocked with dishes and fully functional kitchenettes. The best part is the people. The caretaker was a very friendly woman that helped me at every step and was very responsive. At one point I lost my key, and the owners were VERY quick in getting me a new one and making sure that I had it as soon as I returned. This is a super good value and excellent place to relax by the river in downtown Wilmington! read more

It's hard to give this place anything more than two. I WANT to, I'm sure it has great potential...but... There are only six rooms in the place and by the time we got there they had somehow given away our reservation to a person who had just walked in moments before us. It's not worth going into the explanation given to us, it IS worth saying that the one person on duty just totally messed up and her sole consolation was "like, I can show you the room we have left and like I totally won't make you stay there if you don't like it". 1) quote is verbatim, including the likes; 2) oh, you're considering not punishing us for your f-up? why thank you graciously, madame; 3) it's 8pm on a Friday and we just drove for three hours...are we really going to go hotel hunting right now? you screwed u[p/s]. Two tall people ended up in bed built for Willow. Other than that, the atmosphere is (obviously) relaxed, the decor was nice and it's located in close proximity to some great eats. Just, y'know, call ahead and confirm I guess? Sigh, you crazy Stemmerman, sigh. read more

Booked this place through their website for a weekend trip with my family. Looked good, nice location, and the price was right. I was told to call on my arrival date before I got there if we were going to arrive after 6pm, which I did, but couldn't get anyone to pick up. We ended up standing out on the street with our bags, but not for long. Someone got our message. The guy and gal who showed up to help us were VERY pleasant and gave us a lot of great tips for restaurants, places to visit, etc. Plus, they hooked us up with some muffins and OJ for the morning. Oh, and the place was "cozy", but clean and cute, suited us well... ...the first night, anyway. The place was quiet, wi-fi worked, etc. Our second (last) night was a different story. We got back in around 8-9pm and music was pumping from the downstairs banquet room. There's a note on the door telling us this may happen, but all activity down there ceases at 11pm (torturous), which it did, but then the partiers marched upstairs (loudly) to continue the loud laughter and carrying on in the room next to ours...until 5:30am. The walls are paper thin (no muffling...I could, literally, hear every word)! 2 of us got no sleep at all. Not a great way to spend half of your weekend trip. What's worse is the internet didn't work that day either AND there's nobody ever at the front desk, so it's almost impossible to get assistance for anything. Even when we checked out, I had nobody to complain to. They ask others to keep their voices down and respect others, but there's nobody to enforce this behavior, of course. Large old door is your separate entrance...not super secure and there are a lot of stairs up to the rooms and there were also stairs within our room (where our bed & TV was located). Also, a small kitchenette & bathroom downstairs, and fold-out sofa. Parking was across the street, about 1/2 block down (private, off-street) and might be tricky for a large vehicle to get into because of railroad ties down each side. No space to maneuver, really....but could park on street, as an alternative. Location was good...we could walk just about anywhere we wanted to go, which was great! Good and bad. I suppose you could call ahead about whether the banquet room was booked with an event during your stay, but if you have loud people next to your room, it won't matter. read more

Well, I can't actually say too much. Just a heads up. we didn't stay, but heard great things- wonderful views, prices were great. There's no elevator and the views are had by hiking up 3 stairsways, but whatever, grannie, you could use the work-out. Unfortunately, the peeps that book it have other jobs (so say the surrounding BnB owners), and therefore are not often present. We wandered by maybe 5 times that night, left messages on 3 different phones (my last one was a tad bitchy, so perhaps that negated the other efforts), and never got a return call. So what if it was Easter Sunday. Jesus. So, alas, we stayed at the Front St Inn, which was pricier, but well worth it and no regrets. Others that have reviewed (tripadvisor) have had similar problems with lack of service/response. So beware. read more

Mr. Michael will make your stay worth it. What a great personality! We booked the entire inn for our wedding and all of the guests loved it. My parents even got "kicked out" because the air conditioner died right before they arrived but Mr. Michael set them up in an awesome room at a neighboring inn. He will go above and beyond to answer any questions you have about the area, make sure you're comfortable, and deal with any issues that arise. You can't beat the location downtown, especially if you're attending an event at 128 South or Bakery 105. Just a note, if you need an elevator, go to the Hilton...this is an older inn with all of the loft rooms on the second floor. read more

First off, let me say that the family that owns Stemmerman's and the venue next door have hired a professional Innkeeper to run the Inn, so if you call, I guarantee you'll get someone. Mike is AWESOME. The Inn has six suites in varying sizes with varying amenities. Some have full kitchens, some do not. But they are ALL very cool lofts in a very cool historic building. Everything was clean and well kept. There is a lovely deck out back for smokers or for just sitting around chatting (like we did after our drive in). The view is pretty rad: a big riverboat and a battleship! Cool! The Inn is steps from all sorts of dining and bars. Not blocks, STEPS. The location couldn't be better! We actually stayed on an extra night we liked it so much. My only caution for people booking is to ask about events that may be going on next door at the venue. Since it's all in the same building, it gets loud. If you are bothered by loud parties, then you need to be extra careful when booking. Other than that, I highly recommend Stemmerman's Inn. Prime location in downtown Wilmington. We stayed 2 nights for the 70.3 Ironman and couldn't have asked for a better location. Immaculately kept Inn completely updated and surprisingly spacious interior. The Inn keepers were wonderful in checking us int, taking us to our room and making sure we had everything we needed. This was the perfect place for my wife, daughter and myself. The location can't be beat. The room was a loft style apartment that was was funky and comfortable. It felt like we had rented an apartment in Wilmington for a few days. The innkeeper Michael was friendly and had a lot of good information on where to eat and what to do. This place gives you a lot of autonomy and is not for a high maintenance lodger. There are steps up to all the rooms and this place is connected to a banquet hall that has wedding often. The music can be loud but always ends by 11pm. read more

This is a great location and service and a charming little inn right in the heart of the historic district in Wilmington. This is a like a great surprise that you don't even know you're getting. My husband and I decided to do a "staycation" in Wilmington before his military deployment. We stayed two nights at Stemmerman's Inn. The location is amazing! I loved the room -- it was the two-story suite with a king bed. It didn't feel like a hotel -- it felt like a cool apartment in an old warehouse, with exposed brick and beams. I'm also pretty OCD when it comes to cleanliness; most hotels send me into panic with the dirt/germs present. Our room was SUPER clean and so I was happy. :) Loved it! The staff was exceptional and they have free parking. You can walk anywhere downtown. They share a second story patio with their neighbors so you can catch a great sunset view. I stayed here for a wedding that was taking place at the venue next door and we loved it! The staff was super nice, a little goofy when we were making the reservation, but once we were there they were very sweet. We loved our room, it was very clean, bed was super comfy and we loved the little kitchenette. Negatives- the walls are thin, but it wasn't too bad. The skylight is a b***h in the morning, bring a sleep mask. I also wished there was a TV downstairs, would have been nice to have folks hang out in the room with us. I also was not a fan of a downstairs bathroom. None of the drawbacks took away though from how much we loved the room and the location. read more

I have stayed in 5 star hotels that could be considered nicer and of course have that very sterile atmosphere. We stayed at Stemmerman's for a weekend get away and it was perfect. Remember this is a hotel built in a historical building in historical downtown Wilmington and is a great place to relax. When you combine the hotel with the waterfront, the downtown and restaurants it is the one we will come back to. (We have stayed in 4-5 other hotels in this area). A nice touch was bottled water, orange juice and muffins in the fridge for you. If I was expecting a Westin or Radison I could not given it 5 stars, but what I was expected was a great place to unwind in a historic town and hotel. read more

The Stemmerman's Inn was the best place to stay if you are looking for a spot in downtown Wilmington. I stayed in Suite 7. It was a two level with the bedroom loft upstairs. It had a full kitchen, nice dining table with 2 chairs, 2 huge windows overlooking the street, river, and the back patio, and a fold out couch. It was very bright, very spacious, and very clean. All of the blankets and sheets looked and smelled very new and clean. You have 2 complimentary bottles of orange juice, water, and muffins in the refridgerator in your room. It is very well managed. I'm disappointed to see the negative reviews coming from folks who have never actually stayed at the Inn. The building is beautiful, the location is great, the place is clean, and you have plenty of privacy. Enjoy. read more

If you ever find yourself in Wilmington, I highly recommend staying at this inn! We stayed in Suite 3, which has views of the street and river. Our room was very clean and well appointed with all of the little comforts you hope for in a room away from home including Philosophy bath products (a real plus for me), a cozy couch blanket, wonderfully soft bedding and plenty of accessible electrical outlets (a necessity for my boyfriend and all of his electronics). Additionally, they were kind enough to provide complimentary muffins and orange juice for a quick breakfast on-the-go. Michael, the innkeeper, was very pleasant and helpful which made our experience even better. We also had the pleasure of attending an event at the space connected to the Inn (128 South), and were very impressed with the venue (especially the beautiful outdoor deck that provided a gorgeous view of the river at sunset). My husband and I stayed at Stemmermans this weekend and we simply loved it. The Innkeeper, Michael, was incredibly kind, accommodating, and welcoming without being intrusive. The room was very clean, and comfortable. The room we stayed in was a loft, with the bed on the second floor, which made it very roomy yet cozy. The room is nicely furnished, has exposed brick and lots of natural light. Ironing board, lots of outlets, fridge with beverages and muffins (included in the room price, so no worries). There is terrace facing the water available to all guests, which was very nice. The Inn is located downtown within walking distance of everything yet not smack dab in the center of the late night chaos, which was perfect. It was very affordable and we will certainly return. We stayed for 2 days and from the beginning Mr. Michael was awesome. As soon as we pulled up he came out to help unload out luggage and then helped carry it upstairs after we checked in. We stayed in Suite 7 and it was perfect, very cozy and had all the amenities you could want. There was a great view of the river and there was a very nice covered deck that also gave a great view of the river and the sunsets. Mr. Michael was a wealth of information and such a nice man. By the time our visit was over we felt like we had known him for years, he made you feel like family. There is free parking for guests just across the street, which is great since you can walk to anything you might want to do downtown. We enjoyed it so much we booked another stay the next day! I cannot say enough about Stemmerman's Inn. We stayed here for a week while we were visiting Wilmington and this place became our second home. The staff was courteous and went out of there way to make our stay awesome. The room was adorable and had nice touches that made it feel cozy and true to the historic feel of downtown Wilmington. Stemmerman's Inn in downtown Wilmington NC is a great place for a corporate accomodation! The suites are roomy and comfortable, making it easy for visitors to bring along a family member or even two! Each suite has a well equipped kitchenette, a spacious sitting area and a lovely loft bedroom. The beautiful historic inn sits on the riverfront in the middle of a lively downtown, and has amazing views. Surrounded by many of Wilmington's best restaurants and attractions, corporate guests have plenty to do within walking distance, when they aren't busy working. While the inn is a historic structure, a recent remodling has incorporated all of the modern ammenities one would expect. The innkeepers are attentive and extreamly hospitable.
