I don't know who put the spaniel by the door, but it was the perfect welcome! :) Welcome at the bar, not crowded but very cosy with a lovely open fire. We were guided to a lovely table by the fire which was perfect. We had a lovely lunch too. My wild boar sausages with leek and herbs were fantastic, all meat and no filler I could detect. The mash was yummy and the gravy. The veggies were water logged but I don't hold that against them. (my meal was less than £9.) My companion ate ham, egg and chips and it looked good. The Royal Oak is the essence of what a rural pub needs to be to survive these days. Only a mile or so off the A36 but in a beautiful old village. There is a front room with a small bar and another room in the rear. There is also seating outside for nice days. We sat in the room in the back. Service was excellent here and so was the food. We let our waitress know that we were catching a flight in Stansted and she helped us avoid the traffic around Stonehenge. She was so helpful she actually wrote out turn by turn directions for us.
