Yesterday, in desperate need of cake, I stumbled into the Angel Food Bakery, purse in hands, ready to be blown away. Every time I walk past the shop I gawp and stare like a hungry child, their selection of pretty cupcakes displayed menacingly in the window, tempting you in for a bite. I bought a cupcake and a brownie (it's only fair to try a selection, wouldn't you agree?) and off I went, carrying a sweet little take-away box in my hand, in happy anticipation. Now, I'd like to say first that the shop itself was very pretty and all of the staff are smiley and helpful. The selection of cupcakes is phenomenal, with every flavour imaginable and more, so in terms of variety offered and general atmosphere this place ticks all the boxes. However (and I'm sad to get to this however) the brownie and cupcake I purchased were slightly disappointing. They were the sort of deserts that looked so much more delicious than they tasted, sadly, which is always a bit of a shame. The brownie was massive, which is always a good thing in my opinion, but was slightly dry and lacked that chocolate filled gooey centre that I always hope to find. The cupcake was tastier, but it was still not quite yummy enough to send me back any time soon. Perhaps I tried the wrong things, perhaps there are other cupcakes sitting upon the shelves of the Angel Food Bakery that would blow my mind! I'll go back and retry at some point and see if this is the case, but for now I'll have to give the place three stars. I don't always like sweet things: I often complain about sweetness overloads at places like Shakeaway and such ilk. However, Angel Food Bakery is my sweet exception: it's just lovely. Their focus is cupcakes, and my goodness, what amazing cupcakes: little ones, big ones, sweet ones... they are the best cupcakes in Brighton, and the best naughty treat. My personal recommendation: get just a little one for yourself. They're very cheap, sweet and delicious, and not too much for a little dessert. As well as their amazing cupcakes, Angel Food are a lovely little shop: a great place to sit, although there isn't much seating for a queue that normally stretches far out the door. Still, if you do get a chance, have a perch: there's a big window to the kitchen, so you can see how the cakes are made, plus the pastel pink of the whole place is too cute. I'm also a big fan of having the cupcakes with a cup of tea: I could make it at home, but then I'd lose out on the atmosphere here. If you've a sweet tooth, this is definitely the place to pick up a little something, and even if you're not, I was converted: maybe you'll be too! I recommend going outside of peak hours though: the queue is often very long indeed. read more

Sadly I've got to change my rating for Angel Food Bakery. I went and bought a few cupcakes yesterday, and the icing has definitely changed for the worse. It tastes awful. The Red Velvet used to have a lovely cream cheese icing on it, now it has what can only be described as cheap, margarine tasting stuff on it. It doesn't even taste like icing at all. Lemon cupcake icing didn't taste like lemon or icing either. All the cupcakes in our box were extremely dry. I'm genuinely so disappointed! The quality has drastically lowered. I won Boyfriend of the year 2008. Each year the girls announce who has been the most romantic, caring, self-sacrificing suck up amongst our circle of friends over the previous twelve months and bestow upon him this illustrious title. We don't do the same in return as that would no doubt be considered sexist. There's no prize as such, but it keeps us men on our feet. Now the way I did this was to take my girlfriend at the time to New York as a surprise for valentines Day and as part of that trip, there was a Sex and the City tour, and as part of that tour there was a stop off at some apparently relevant cupcake shop. Now I don't much like Sex and the City, but from that moment on, I lurved Cupcakes. Also on the list of things I love is Brighton and whenever I go there I leave enough space after lunch to satisfy my sweet tooth at the Angel Food Bakery. They have a range of cupcakes in the standard size and can also prepare full cakes if you pre-order. The pricing escapes me at the moment, but i remember being reasonable for the high quality cakeage (it's a word. Deal with it!) on offer. My personal favourite is the classic Red Velvet. Who has cream cheese is just for crackers? This little dollop of delight has cream cheese icing! Other amazing flavours include the classic chocolate, the always underestimated vanilla and the devilish devils food cake (minus points for the lazy adjective). The cakes themselves have a perfect consistency and aren't too dry like the pre-packaged ones from supermarkets. From the moment the first bite passes your lips you will realise that these people are masters in the field of Cupcakery (again, also a word. What? Shakespeare did it!). Do it. Give in to temptation and don't walk past this place without getting your cake on. read more

As the Traveling Cupcake you can only imagine my slight obsession with the sugary goodness that are these little cakes of heaven. I can't explain my delight when I stumbled across the bakery in the maze of the South Lanes. I like to think that I'm a minimalist when it comes to Cupcakes. I will easily pass by the Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting for a good old fashion Vanilla with Buttercream. This is the perfect place for an afternoon tea and cupcake treat. Angel Food also does layer cake, but I don't think that I could stray from my babies. My first taste was of a simple Vanilla lovely with light blue dyed frosting (of course with sprinkles) this in my Cupcake Connoisseur opinion was the best I have ever had, and I have eaten them From New York to Nicaragua. I'm not somebody with much of a sweet tooth, but this is certainly one exception. The cupcakes sold in this cafe might be the most beautiful, well made sweets that you will ever. Hidden in the winding South Laines, this was Brighton's first "cupcakery", and probably the best. They regularly change the offerings, making it far harder to resist frequent visits and expanding waistline. Examples of some of those I have eaten are strawberries and cream, devil food cake and the 'red velvet'. All of which were tastier than my meagre brain could ever vocalise. Space is a bit limited, so it might be an idea to make use of the takeaway service on offer. If you do eat in though, the Angel Food Bakery offers some good coffee and tea also. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. so much that i have to capitalize all the letters of the first sentence. I love cupcakes, so i might be a little biased, but this place sure lives up to its name! i got a red velvet, which i shared with my friend. so, so good. The frosting was good too! i scraped most of my frosting onto my friend's piece, but from what i tasted, it wasn't insanely insanely sweet. You bet that i'm coming back here for more! Strawberry and devil's food are next on my list! it's a shame that i can only give 5 stars because this place is THE heaven on earth. Oh how I dream of going back to Brighton... sure in part to view the ocean again and play a little bit of arcade games on the pier but really and truly to go back to the Angel Food Bakery! I had my first cupcake in England here (besides Sainsbury's ones which do not count) and I, being a New Yorker, was expecting to be disappointed. I ordered a chocolate cupcake with a white chocolate frosting and was warned by my companion that I made the wrong choice. Oh no I did not! The cake itself was a little on the hard side I must admit but the frosting, oh the frosting! It's so hard to find a place that makes cupcakes and gets it that some people do not like loads of frosting on their cupcakes or frosting that is so sweet your teeth scream in agony when you take your first bite, this is such a place. Just the right amount of cream frosting, light and whippy, it added to the cake and did not deter from it. A bit like Magnolia's a bit like Crumbs but had it's own yumminess wrapped up inside making it waaaay to easily consumable. At about 2 pounds a cupcake it was FABU people! And it has inspired me to now go on a quest to find a similarly good cupcake in London... I don't know if I can do it but I'll give it my A game and know that at least I'll always have Brighton! read more

Following on from the cupcake craze in the US, Angel Food Bakery has made a real name for itself as a unique and delicious cake maker. Red Velvet is particularly gorgeous with cream cheese frosting and red sponge. They offer various sizes from baby cupcakes right up to 9' layer cakes, as well as made to order cakes for weddings and birthdays. If your looking for a small piece of heaven in your mouth then this is place to go. The cakes are great for gifts of any occasion, or to send your colleagues wild with an office treat. As rather a stubborn individual, I rejected the encroachment of the cupcakery on these shores. The way they fussed around, halfway between a fairy cake and a muffin, all bells and whistles and colourful 'frosting', sending good old slices of proper fullsized cake to the sidelines with their eyecatching tweeness. Bloody cupcakes. I avoided them in shops and made sure I treated the classic cake with the care and attention it deserved. And then, I don't know when, I ate one. Why oh why does something so wrong have to taste so right? I pondered. Other similar late-adoption occasions were brought into sharp focus in my mind. The day I bought my first digital camera having persevered with film for at least four years too long. The first time I put on skinny jeans two years later than the fashpack. I am doing it wrong, I thought. Then I realised, there are areas that I have done it right. I have ignored high-waisted hotpants. I didn't bother getting a Minidisk player but was right in there with the iPod. The fate of cupcakes is yet to be determined. How long will we tolerate these American sweet baked goods and obsess over the idea of sending a box to our nearest and dearest for almost any occasion? Will the good old Victoria Sponge ever reign supreme again? It remains to be seen, but, for now, the cupcake certainly has its plus points. Tasty and individually sized. Angel Food Bakery was very good indeed. I suppose it's my inherent reluctance to adopt the cupcake that doesn't award them the full five stars. read more

Angel Food Bakery have cottoned on to the Hollywood fad of cupcakes, which is gradually spreading over here. The bakery is so cute situated in the cobbled and most rustic part of the Lanes. They do all sort of size cakes from little mini one to big celebration ones. I always venture in for birthdays. Everyone who's had a cake from there raves about it, its an absolute must. read more

Ordered a cake for my birthday party in person at the bakery and paid in full. I went through every detail with the member of staff as I wanted it to be perfect and party planning can be very stressful. Came to collect my cake on my birthday and the day of the party and they had no record of my order and had not made the cake. This was two hours before the party and was so infuriating and upsetting for me. They ended up delivering a different cake made for someone else to my apartment a few hours later. I had ordered a red velvet cake and I ended up with a chocolate cake. I would not recommend this bakery for any special events that you have. The staff acted extremely annoyed at me for their mistake and like I was putting them out or making up having ordering a cake with them. I wish I had just gotten a cake from Patisserie Valerie as this was my second choice. read more

Well, what a disappointment, I read you reviews before coming here. All I can say is that many of your contributors have never experienced good baking. I have enjoyed cupcakes on both sides of the Atlantic, and this is a poor attempt at cashing in on the trend established by some truly great cake shops. May I suggest that if its cupcakes your after you should try Beas of Bloomsbury in London. But if you want great cakes then just walk upto Gardner st. Seriously the homemade cakes at the pasty shop make these dry sugary nonsense look like, hmm well dry sugary nonsense. I suspect the fad is soon to end, and there will be no place for these poor imitations, and hopefully only the real cake makers will survive. read more

There are not many cities that are popular enough to make a shop that sells lots and lots of cup cakes and nothing else (unless the rest was behind the cupcakes), but Brighton manages it, and I am quite glad, because it means you get a lovely little shop like Angel Food Bakery making really really good cupcakes that are a joy to behold. We booked a bread-making class and then made an enquiry about the possibility of changing dates. Finally we did not need to rearrange it but still we were "taken off the list" without notification. When we were on our way we were informed that the course was not taking place as it had been cancelled (without us being informed). Finally I asked for a refund which has been denied to me despite I did not cancel anything or receive any confirmation of any cancelation. This is unbelievable.. The cupcakes are moist and light. But they are totally FLAVORLESS. I had Red Velvet and the boy had Orange Chocolate. My RV tasted neither of chocolate nor any other ingredient. And it was frosted with a plain (not even Vanilla) buttercream rather than the requisite cream cheese frosting. The Orange Chocolate was barely either flavor. The most flavorsome bit being the Terry's Orange bit on top. Reasonable price and good quality, but I want my cake to have a taste! :( read more

We bought our first anniversary cake from this shop after looking at all the enthusiastic reviews by different people. We were utterly disappointed as Firstly we asked for a fresh cream cake and they gave us a butter cream cake. Secondly the butter cream decoration start to feel off when we tried to cut it Thirdly the sponge is in the cake was very dry and you have to wash that down with some drink Last but not the lest it's was much more expensive than any other shop so unfortunately they are not serving up to there ratings or even pricing When my wife left an review on there website; they called her back and told her off for this with comments such as "this shop is not for you" and "you shouldn't come back to this shop again" and the most funny one "you should have bough the cake back to shop"- are you flipping kidding me! BEST CAKES EVER! Can't get much better than this and honestly I should know. The staff are lovely and it's always been a real treat (see what I did there!) to sit in and experience the South Laines with good music and lovely coffee. It's the southern British equivalent to a patisserie somewhere in Paris, France. Down a cobbled road, this bakery is in the heart of part of what used to be the old fishing villages and you can feel the history as you walk by it. But don't walk by it! Angel Food Bakery is a wonderful Brighton institution and I believe, the original and best cupcake establishment this side of the Atlantic. As a bit of a cake-lover, I have tried a whole host from the Hummingbird Bakery to the new Patrick Cox cakes (he should stick to shoes) and nothing rivals the quality and price of the cupcakes here. It is a busy place and rightly so, well worth the que and its great to have a nosey peak at the staff baking and decorating through the kitchen window. I stumbled upon this small little cupcake bakery while I was exploring the Lanes one day and the sweet aroma and cute cupcake decorations in the windows drew me in. In California, cupcake bakeries are starting to become a new sensation, and I absolutely love it. I make a point of trying cupcakes from different bakeries because each has its own unique styles. The cupcakes they make here are fairly moist and have delicious flavors. So far my favorite has been the strawberry shortcake one because it's a little lighter and has a sweet strawberry center. The red velvet is pretty good as well because it's not overwhelmingly sweet. I'm not the biggest fan of the frosting they put on top of their cupcakes because it is very very sweet and it kinda overpowers the flavor of the cupcake but the actual cake part of the cupcake is moist, soft and delicious! I do recommend this place though and is a must for people with a big sweet tooth. read more
