Nestled deep in the heart of the Ruby Mountains, the Lamoille Canyon picnic area is a rugged gem…read morethat whispers serenity to those who listen. We arrived just after a group had packed up, and to our delight, the grounds were impressively clean--proof that some still honor the wilderness code. But as we wandered with our dogs, soaking in the alpine air and golden light filtering through the aspens, we spotted the occasional blemish: a forgotten sock here, a stray water bottle there. Remnants of carelessness that jarred against the canyon's quiet dignity. We didn't come to clean, but we couldn't leave it behind. Half a garbage bag later, we left the place better than we found it--because that's what stewards of the wild do. Still, it stings to see such beauty treated like a backdrop for convenience. Lamoille deserves reverence, not neglect. Despite that, the canyon remains breathtaking. Towering cliffs, whispering pines, and trails that beckon the soul to roam. We'll be back--next time, hopefully to simply enjoy, not to restore. Until then, may others tread lightly and leave no trace. In a quote from Chief Seattle, "We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children".

There was no dump station and potable water available. I got the impression that water was in the works since they did have facets throughout the campground. Temporary shutdown? We did get a warning on the reservation website so be sure to confirm. You will pass through a small town on your way here. I highly recommend filling up your rig at one of the local gas stations just in case. We've stayed on site 21 located along the river. Any site off the river will not disappoint. 26 dollars a night! I've never stayed at a place that cheap with that kind of scenery. If you are a risk taker, I've seen sites even cheaper for walk-ins. Also, don't rely on the directions posted here on Yelp because it's incorrect. It's located in Spring Creek Nevada. Type in Thomas Canyon Campground on Google maps and you be just fine. I've submitted the correct address to Yelp moderators. Hopefully they'll make an update.

The river didn't have much water but there were still people trying to fish. Hikes were pretty amazing. When we arrived at 4 pm on Friday, we got the last single car spot. It was definitely filled with people even during COVID. But everyone was in their own area minding their own business. When we saw travelers trying to pass us through, we wore masks. Would love to come here at different times of year to experience all weathers.

Ducks love this marsh and it is popular for nesting. While we were on the lake we saw ducks in the grasslands. It is a beautiful place to spend a few hours at. We did a short auto tour to see the Marsh on a dirt road on our way to Harrison Pass Rd. Best time to see waterfowl & their young is from May-July.
