We really had a great time here, dropping in at random with our party of 8. We had to wait (and occasionally head upstairs to stare with daggers) at the party using the large separate room but, eventually they finished and we were sufficiently pre-gamed downstairs and "in for dinner!" We enjoyed our appetizers, wine, and meals, finishing with a few very tasty deserts. The wait staff certainly didn't mind our noisy and enthusiastic group, complete with obvious American accents. read more

I will always remember this little pub as the place I had my first mulled wine. I had a great local brew, then walked back up to get my second, saw someone order the mulled wine, asked what it was, got a slightly perturbed response (Who is this American that doesn't know what mulled wine is?), and ordered one for myself. Warm, spiced, and delicious. All I had was beer, cider, and mulled wine here, so I can't speak to the food or the service really, but it's in a great location right across from the Noel Coward Theatre, so it would be a great spot to hit before or after a show. read more

Well just out for a walk and the storm clouds gathered overhead. Just a stroll to get to know the area. Um not really accomplished. So I popped in before the I got wet. Seems many people also decided on that. Old, young and fathers with sons got out of the rain here. The food comes from upstairs. I ordered a cask ale. Obviously I was pegged as American and I was presented with a Budweiser - the original from Czech that won to keep it's name. Well it was good. The place was decorated for Halloween celebration that evening. It's big but it feels small with many tables. The staff was very personable and accommodating. They got hit with many varying requests from the other patrons. They went out of way to make sure the orders were me. Even if some orders were from paranoia. The place sits across from a theatre and I guess it does well before and possible after a show. read more

Nice pub just opposite the theatre. Just away from Leicester square the area is often busy. Some space outside lets you enjoy the ecclectic passing crowds of London on a summers evening. Nice ales are available and it draws in a twenty thirties crowd. Not a large place by any means, but a good option if you are passing. read more

Like a sad bottomy fart, my expectations slowly exhaled as I had it proved to me again why lunch can all to often be a gastronomic graveyard if you pick restaurants incorrectly. And, like the elegant cougar from the night before revealed in the cold harsh spring sunshine, there are just some places that obviously don't deliver in the daylight. Owned by the group behind a range of solid enough gastropubs with reasonable reputations elsewhere in the capital, I can only assume that the Chef, the manager and indeed everyone bar the kitchen porter of the Angel and Crown were on a group bonding session somewhere a long, long way away when I popped in on a Tuesday lunchtime. Just across from the Noel Coward on St Martin's Lane is prime tourist territory and no doubt teeth clenchingly high rent, but neither are reason for the proprietors of recently refurbished pub dining room to charge me £13 for one of the most depressing burgers I've eaten in a long time. Described as a 'Dexter beef burger', it was a woeful embarrasment of a meal and the sort of bovine abuse you'd expect from an Aberdeen Angus, Garfunkels or Scotch Steakhouse. My friend Simon is the rightfully proud owner of the world's smallest Dexter beef herd, having two of the little blighters. The oldest, named charmingly by his carnivorous kiddies as Burger, deserves a better end than the poor Dexter that had contributed to the grim patty on my plate. I have a feeling Simon would rather set them free to take their own chances than let them turn up like this. Requested medium rare, it trickled pale juice but consisted of gray meat throughout with no char, sweetness or indeed real taste. The dense clag of over handled preparation made the thick single note mortuary slab a trial to eat. It lingered thankfully little on the palate but squatted in my gut for the remainder of the day like an ill mannered toad at the bottom of a pond. The roll felt either frozen or forgotten, either way brittle, hard and inedible, crumbling by the wayside. The chips had a whiff of the Maccy D's about them and came served with two wafer thin slices of gherkin and a tasteless watery beef tomato slice. I'm not going to bother describing the standard decor of the empty upstairs dining room or the amiable staff, both were fine. I just want to tell my salutary patty based tale and get this memory over and done, consigning it to the bin of disappointment in the depths of my cerebellum, pulling it out dustily if anyone suggests trying this place. read more

Jumped in to have a sit down after a long day of touring. Cute decor, lots of red. There was a "fireplace" above my head on a big screen tv. I think the other television had a game on at the moment. Friendly staff. Comfy seating. Was nice to sit in a booth next to the window and people watch. They have crabbies as their signature beverage apparently. It's all over the place in here. They also sell Kopparberg Elderflower and Lime cider. Tastes like lychee drink. yum! read more

Kind of upscale English pup located in central London. They keep a nice stock of beverages on tap as well as wines and alcohol. The interior leaves room for about 40 guests in the pup and quite a few of those looked like they waited to go upstairs to the restaurant. We didn't so this is solely a review of the pub. The atmosphere was an odd yet cosy combination of wanting to be upscale and trying to keep the English pup tradition. It somewhat worked, if around next time I'm there I'd suggest it for a proper pint. read more

Stumbled here when my friends didn't know where to go around Leicester Square for food. We started with some toast and lemon hummus, but it tasted somewhat chunky and funny (not sure if it was supposed to be like that). I had a sausage sandwich that was alright, but the portion was small that I don't think it was worth the money. My friends had burgers that seem like the buns were bigger than the patty? Overall, not an impressive place for food. Perhaps the beer is the reason why you'd go there. Had a pint there and that was fine. read more

I've never seen vegetable soup that orange. The bottom line is it's not a place for food. The soup was greasy, and had very few veggies. The fish and chips were rough as was the grilled chicken plate. Our waiter couldn't have been nicer, but again, not a place for food. I'd say a fine spot to stop in for a drink, but not much more. read more

Hmmm. there are lots of good points to this place. The main one being that you can get a pretty reasonable meal in the middle of tourist central. The downside being that if there's not a huge bustle about a place in this area, there's probably a reason for it. But I was so hungry I was almost delirious so I didn't care. There's nothing wrong with it in here. Though the downstairs is always a bit bare looking. The restaurant upstairs is fine. Tables are very close together though. The guy at the next table had a look of shock on his face at something I'd said, but he shouldn't have been being such a nosy parker. The staff were nice and friendly and didn't mind that I couldn't make up my mind at all. Unfortunately the menu made things sound much nicer than they really were. I feel like my scampi and chips was spread about the plate so I didn't notice there wasn't very much. And the scampi was battered. Despite my friend telling me it's always battered, i know this is a fib. But I'm being fussy. So yeah, average food, average pub. Handy is it's busy elsewhere. read more

A tiny pub on the same block as 5 others in busy Leicester Square, you would probably walk past the Angel and Crown. The good things is it does interval drinks for Avenue Q (because the target audience are all of age, of course). The bad thing is I've never seen it take so long to pour a glass of wine. In all other ways it is average, with the normal variety of pub grub, the normal beers on tap and the normal cramped toilets. Good for a quick stop before theatre but don't hold your breath. read more

Well, we came back to give the food a go but...sadly....we couldn't come back. Our doorstep sandwiches looked impressive but the thick white bread was tasteless and we left more than we ate. Chips were great...as was the wine! A bargain lunch but not one to be repeated.... read more

A friend and I were desperate to find a place that was still serving food. Since we were still on American time (PST, no less), we had only been awake for a while and it felt very early to us, when in fact most places were shutting down their kitchens. Luckily, the Angel and Crown consists of a pub below and a restaurant upstairs. The restaurant was still open, but they informed us it would be about 15 minutes and suggested we go back downstairs for a drink. Happily, we did, When we returned, a different employee told us it would be about 15 minutes to get a table. We explained our current dejavu situation, and they promptly seated us. I got the fish & chips because I'm American and could hardly figure out what anything else on the menu was. It was quite good. The service was quick and efficient. One thing that did bother me, though, was that even though a "service charge" was added to the receipt, when I placed the cash in the tray thingy with the bill, the server asked me "would you like any change?" Now, I'm a big believer in tipping and make it a point to tip well. Naturally, the tipping culture is very different across the pond. It sort of irked me that the server apparently assumed that we would tip because we were American, but, whatevs. It also irks me when people use the word "irk", so I should just shut up now. Oh, and the bartenders in the pub below were awesome and very friendly. read more

Pleasant. If you can't decide where to stop for an after work or pre theatre drink, this quaint bar is just fine.

Trepidatious at first, due to the huge, noisy crowd hanging outside the place, but the entrance to the restaurant is tucked off to the side and the restaurant itself was calm and quiet, though tightly packed. Excellent gastro pub food with a nice wine selection. Efficient and knowledgeable waitstaff. read more
