Located right on South King Street across the Honey Ham Store just before Prince Kunio Elementary School so it is basically street metered parking and I was SO lucky to have secured on right in front of the shop. Entering you need to ring the doorbell and a staff will let you in. With the assortment of merchandise they have it's so well organized and just so easy to browse. I fell in love with so many items and so many totes I was really difficult to focus on my retail therapy but did manage to find a few items that are very practical yet so cute! The creativity and skill these artists have are amazing there was a jacket that had jeans belt loop as a collar...genius! As a crafter lover myself I find myself appreciating many of the items found here as nothing beats a unique item that's crafted not just by hand but the touches that you can't find anywhere which is priceless. Nui Mono is a small boutique store in McCully that offers unique, creative, handcrafted clothing,…read moremany made of cotton, linen, silk, and rayon, and accessories with Asian influences that are made by local women artists. It started in 1979 as Elaine Sumako Kawahara Costello enjoyed nice clothes and made her own, and she loved recycling old kimonos and obi fabrics to create new garments. Daughter Lue Costello spent her childhood years going through pattern books with her mom and learned firsthand how to design, cut, and farm out the sewing. It became a mom-and-daughter operation as a clothing and gift shop with an ethnic flair. The name "Nui Mono" was chosen. It's a Japanese term, with "Nui" meaning to sew or stitch, and "Mono" meaning an object or thing; hence, anything that Is stitch or sewn, such as clothing or handbags. Mom passed away in 2012, and Lue took over the helm and continues to manage the store and legacy left by her mom. In my travels of Japan, I've gained interest in Japanese handcrafts and textiles and have been fortunate to participate in craft classes. Japanese craftsmanship is known for its meticulous attention to detail and the refinement of techniques passed down through generations. Crafted items were often designed to last, with a focus on quality and the ability to be repaired and cherished for generations. The Japanese concept finds beauty in imperfection and embraces things that are simple and aged (wabi sabi). I was so excited to learn that Nui Mono existed as a Honolulu-based store with the same philosophy of meaningful Japanese handcrafts. There are many skillful and talented local individuals willing to share their beautiful handcrafted items that are of the same quality as found in Japan. I enjoy indigo-dyed fabrics in blue, and Japanese printed fabric used in blouses and hand-sewn bags. Via social media, Nui Mono lets its many loyal customers know of its many pop-up sales and new items offered by the many creative women that it sponsors. Temari HI, a non-profit organization founded in 1979, partners with Nui Mono to support the artists and teach traditional and contemporary techniques through workshops to perpetuate traditional Asian Pacific folk art. Classes include kimono adaptation and kadomatsu and New Year traditions. Lue usually holds down the fort in the small store and are often assisted by other artists, especially if there is a pop-up sale. Lue and staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful in finding the right outfit for you. The small store is clean, bright, and filled with handcrafted items on racks, walls, and ledges. There are lots of clothing, jewelry, bags, dishcloths, greeting cards, novelty items, hot dish holders, mugs, and more. Every single space in the store has an item that is available for sale. The many items are artfully displayed. Hours of operation are Tues to Fri 10a to 4p, Sat 10a to 3p, and Sun/Mon closed. Located across from the Hawaiian Human Society, there is free parking behind the store, which is shared with other businesses of the complex. Metered street parking is available fronting the store. I'm ecstatic that Nui Mono offers the same high-quality Asian fabrics and accessories as found in Japan. Since this year's the Year of the Dragon, I contacted the store & they gladly added me on the list once the shirts was available to puchase & pick up. They called me notifying the shirts were ready (they usually hold your reserved items for you for a couple of days). Yes, the shirts are a bit north of $100 but because the shirt is comfortable & very high quality I'd say it's worth it. Love the shirt & design so much I bought both colorways! The staff was very helpful, from showing me the dressing room to showing me other offerings such as their shorts & other styles currently on sale. & the way they fold the items into the bag shows they give great care to their products. The reason that I went into her boutique was because I needed some alterations done on two pieces that I wanted to wear for a special occasion during an upcoming Thanksgiving trip to the Mainland. Anne Namba's designs draws me in because I feel that I can "relate" to the styles. The way the garments are cut gives me a feeling of simple contemporary elegance. I'm not tall nor thin nor young in age but her styles can be tailored to fit (ALL women) so I've not felt intimidated into thinking that I should look like a model. Even the vintage fabrics are meticulously put together that you can accessorize to dress up or down. There's a line of EuroAsian-inspired printed silk if you're not into vintage kimono or obi based clothes. The clothing here can be custom designed or fitted for men and women. Before stepping foot into the boutique, I called and spoke to one of Anne's staff, Mary. I wanted to make sure that I could just drop by to get my silk duster fit and to replace the elastic in a pair of silk pants. Her voice effused friendliness and warmth over the phone. I brought in my pieces, she fit (measured) my garment, gave me an estimate for alteration and said their seamstresses would do their best to get the items done within 7 days. I asked her for home silk care and cleaning tips as I had a garment that had been badly "age or rust" spotted. While waiting for the alterations, I tried Mary's recommendations. Within minutes, my damaged garment was sparkling clean! Oh boy, I just had to tell Mary about the success of her tip! To my surprise, my alterations were completed within 4 days (including a weekend) so at first chance, I rushed back to the boutique. We chatted for a few minutes and I got a couple of more tips from her. My eyes danced with glee just looking around at all the new styles, fabrics and colors. I even zeroed in on an outfit that I'd love to have but, my retired person conscious got the better of me. I would encourage men and women of all ages to visit this boutique...you will be amazed by the quality, beauty and wearability of the garments. My mom is into fashions that show off the great designs that appear on a Japanese kimono and obi. So, it was really cool to finally visit Montsuki. A less well known local designer along the lines of Anne Namba (http://www.yelp.com/biz/anne-namba-designs-inc-honolulu ), the Yamasaki's have been custom designing kimono inspired clothing and accessories for years. I finally met Patty and she was very nice. Hearing all the stories from my mom and friend's mothers, I was interested to see what kind of stuff she had. Much of her clothing is quite elegant, I guess that's mainly a result of using kimono textiles as your base canvas. It's all very intricate and well made. She does quite a bit of custom work also seeing as she made a beautiful dress for my friend's mother. She sells everything from dresses, tops, jackets, purses, and if she doesn't have it, you can probably have her make one for you. Anyway, you've probably driven past this small boutique and not even known it. It's located right on Koko Head Avenue (close to the corner near Waialae Avenue). Go upstairs to a small hallway, you can actually see the sign from the street. Parking is in the metered lot behind.
