Can't sew, Won't sew. Thats me summed up. I hated Home Economics at school and the teacher gave up on me when after 3 years I still couldn't tack a hem. I actually don't think I am too bad; I can sew buttons onto shirts and name tags onto uniforms and when the Almighty created Wonderweb ( that sticky stuff you iron onto clothes so you can make any seam, seemlessly) I was in sartorial heaven. However, there is always a time when you have to admit defeat that your domestic skills are inadequate and you are compelled to seek expert assistance.
One of my pet hates is a business name which is a pun or a "clever" play on words. You know, like: "Hair Today Gone Tomorrow" for a hairdressers, or "A Stitch In Time" for a tailor. So when I stumbled on "Andros Nicholaou, Tailors, Repairs and Alterations", I thought, nice, straightforward name that tells it how it is, and I left my dress in his hands to take in. Andros is a lovely Cypriot man who is a tailor extraordinaire. He is very friendly and listens intently when you suggest he converts your wedding dress into a Moulin Rouge basque, and then Andros gently advises you against it and comes up with an idea so clever, you wish you were the one who came up with it. This man knows his seams! Your garment will be ready for collection within a couple of days and his prices do not seem to follow any particular structure but they are very reasonable.
I am of the opinion that every person should have the phone number of a reliable builder, plumber, electrician, mechanic and tailor, so for the latter I suggest you save Andros's in your mobile. read more
