I guess I didn't realize just how much there is within walking distance of where we live! Mr…read more Snarky showed me a pair of his trousers and at the bottom he had ripped the hem. Since I don't have the equipment to fix the hem, I figured I would try to find a tailor that could fix it. Besides, you never know when you might need a tailor. I found Carols Express Alterations on Yelp, but it didn't have any reviews. I figured since it was about a 15 minute walk on a lovely, sunny day, to give it a go. I nearly walked right by the place and had no clue there was a tailor there! When I walked in it was quite busy with a small queue. There are a couple of sewing machines in the window, with the counter and till to the left. On the day that I dropped the trousers off, there was only one person at the counter. Along with tailoring, they also offer ironing and laundry services. I was asked when I wanted to pick up the trousers and it turns out with easy repairs they can do them same day, but I was in no hurry so I just asked for a few days later. They give you a ticket (don't lose it because they don't put names on them) and you pay when you pick up. I had thought about picking up the trousers on my way to pick up Mr. Snarky at the train station, however, there isn't much for parking. There is a pay-and-display across the street, but I find it is usually full during the day. So I just walked back up and when I walked in, there were two staff, this time no queue. One of the staff was working at one of the sewing machines, while the other took my ticket and went in search of the trousers. Alterations for trousers was £3, which is less than what I would have spent getting the supplies to repair the hem myself, not to mention they probably did a better job than I could have done. The hem was repaired quite nicely and it looks like they used a sturdier thread than what was previously used (I compared it with the hem on the other leg). Overall, really happy with the job they did, it was very fast, convenient, and affordable! I am considering taking my wedding dress from earlier this year and having some alterations made for the wedding and reception in the U.S. next year.

I am used to asking multiple tailors who refuse to touch such items. These tailors are the champions of tailoring. No task is too big for them and they will do it quicker than any other tailors in town. It is also worth mentioning how cheap they are in comparison to there failing rivals. If you have some old clothes that you're considering chucking soon, think twice. Those boyfriend jeans could soon be the best skinny jeans you own. That jacket your bought over Christmas when you ate to much Christmas pud could soon fit perfectly again. Give your clothes a new lease of life and save yourself a few pounds in the process.

Hey, they spend all week put away in office-friendly attire, at the weekends the girls like to have their time in the spotlight. Being about as skilled with a needle and thread as I am with neurosurgery (ie- not at all; I did Literature so am not qualified to lobotomise you or anyone else, so don't ask!) I pretty much resigned Weird Dress to the back of the wardrobe. Which was a shame. Its graphic monotone Biba print called out to me every time I opened the door, and I had to remind it "no, Weird Dress, your sleeves are mad and your neckline too matronly!" Which I think upset it somewhat. It lingered there for months, until the boyf (very unfortunately) had occasion to wear a suit; a funeral. He didn't actually own a suit, so went to buy one. But the suit shop didn't have trousers long enough, so they knocked £10 off the suit and sent us to Stitches, where those of the male persuasion can have a pair of suit trews let down and finished for £10, and an hour's wait. Amazing. A couple of months later, Tea Snob Friend announced her 1960s birthday dinner party. Oooh, I thought, Oooh! So, I sent Weird Dress to be altered. One day later, and £14 lighter, I was wearing a cutesy cap-sleeved, boat-necked, mini-hemmed extraordinary dress. The clever folk at Stitches had even saved the contrast banding on the hem, and re-sewn it onto the new hem. That's what I call seamstressery (even though that's not a word...) This place is fantabulous. Whether it's a simple trou-down, or multiple alterations to your very own Weird Dress, the Stitches team will sort it out in double-quick time, and for mere pennies. Last night a tailor saved my life, from a broken heart. Well, that is if by 'saved my life', you…read moremean 'saved me lots of hassle' and by 'a broken heart', you mean 'my girlfriend'. I had two pairs of trousers with broken zips. I had been meaning to get them fixed for a few weeks but hadn't had the opportunity. My lady was getting impatient - apparently there is a limited amount of time that she's willing to be seen with me sporting a pair of Decathlon walking trousers (but they're timeless classics!) that are slightly too short for me. Cue a visit to Smart City Tailors by me, less than two hours before their closing time. Could they help? Just one pair of trousers with a new zip would help. Rubbish sir, we'll fix both pairs. And we won't charge you extra however much you protest. Just pop back later before we close. I did, and you know the rest: last night a tailor saved my life from a broken heart.
