I am really stunned and somewhat infuriated that some reviewers are giving Dr. Albert a low review based on his office staff! Very unfair to this dedicated, warm and talented doctor. If I were in a true "Gastro emergency" I know that Dr. Albert would be there for me. THAT'S MY TOP PRIORITY. Selfishly, I am reluctant to give too good a review here because I want Dr. Albert all to myself. However, due to his kindness and personal interest in my IBD treatment I feel I owe it to him for other perspective patients to know what a truly wonderful man he is. I gave 2 stars because I do think this practice cares about its clients. But they seem to be better with just regular run of the mill GI issues. I saw this Dr and his intern for a few years. I had blood in my stool, and lots of pain. A first colonoscopy showed mild inflammation at the scope site. Long story short they diagnosed me ulcerative colitis. I started treatment and never got better, so got second opinions, both of which said there was no sign of UC. Frustrated I went back to Dr Albert. Now they changed their minds and said well if UIC said no, then we will change our opinion and also say you dont have UC. Flash forward to 3 more colonoscopies that showed no signs of IBD. I was diagnosed finally by another Dr as having endometriosis and dealt with that. Still having pain and GI issues I went back to Dr Albert. His intern seemed to give up and just keep trying to get me to do a colonoscopy AGAIN. I got ahold of Dr Albert himself who was nice, but then tried to offer that maybe since I smoked marijuana I had the new controversial cyclical vomiting disease? I just couldnt take it anymore. I found a new gastro who seemed interested in helping me find the root of the issues without just saying the same things over and over and trying to get me to do another colonoscopy. I would add at my last colonscopy I was so upset after being left for hours while Dr did an emergency, when he came back he told me bascially this was all in my head and all anxiety because his scope once again didnt see anything. If you are having more complex issues. SKIP THIS OFFICE. Huge waste of time and as someone who has been gaslit by Drs her whole life only to find she had POTS, stage 4 endo, ehlers danlos and an autoimmune, I certainly DID NOT appreciate the gaslighting again, just bc they didnt bother to figure out what was actually going on. read more

Dr. Albert came highly recommended by a family member for some gastric concerns. His office got me in right away and I met with his PA, Paige. She was patient, very thorough, and listened to all concerns. She scheduled me for an endoscopy and colonoscopy. His front desk was very kind and efficient. I had an early morning apt. for my procedures with Dr Albert. He has an amazing bedside manner and came to check on me before the procedure to make sure I felt calm, had no other questions or concerns and reviewed what would be done. After, he sat and talked with me, like a friend, not a patient. I drove from the northwest suburbs for the appointment and procedure and would do it again. I am so frustrated with this office I could scream. Dr. Albert seems nice enough but his office is completely incompetent and frankly, that reflects poorly on him too. I had some liver issues and he was recommended by my GP. First, he ordered a whole slew of expensive bloodwork. Fine. On the second appointment to discuss the results, he recommended a biopsy if I think I should have one. Excuse me? I don't know - you're the doctor, should I? I was stunned but I did the biopsy. $3,000 later, after insurance. Nothing serious it turns out but it took him a month to contact me to discuss the results. A month! By that time, I'd already received the results in MyChart and google diagnosed myself for the most part. Now I'm fighting with what appears to be an incredibly incompetent billing department who doesn't seem to understand what a copay is and keeps insisting that what I paid for office visit copays were paid by my insurance (no, that was MY credit card). And the invoice total is incorrect as well. Despite dozens of requests, they have yet to send me a detailed, itemized invoice of how they came to these numbers. It is aggravating beyond belief. Oh - and no one answers the phone. Right to voicemail every time. I will be looking for a new gastroenterologist and recommend you do the same. read more

I had a colonoscopy scheduled for this Friday. According to the paperwork I received, I would get a phone call one week before the procedure. That seemed reasonable to me and I really wanted that contact. I had questions in general regarding the procedure, the preparation for the procedure, and I needed a prescription for the preparation. I thought that conversation would be the time for taking care of these matters. Also, I needed a COVID test 4 days before the procedure. Dr. Andrew's office does not handle this COVID test, but no one from the hospital had reached out to me regarding the test either. So for all of these things, to get clarity and because I had not received a phone call from their office, I called their office this morning. Diana called me back. She did not say her name or where she was calling from. I could only tell that she wanted to get off the phone with me, even before I started talking. She simply said something to the effect of, "I'm calling you back. What are your questions?" I asked to speak with someone else and got the same brusque tone from this person. If someone who is supposed to give you information is clearly not professional and demonstrably irritated, it makes you feel like you are an annoyance and that you are probably not getting the right or all the information. Talking with these people this morning was a really terrible experience. If their office had been organized, had lived up to what they said they would do in the information that they gave me, then I would not have needed to call their office and spent this time worrying that I didn't have all the information that I needed. They are providing a service that people need, but they are a business. And that means they should be professional and maybe even friendly. This is a stressful time to get a procedure, and it seems like their business processes and also demeanor could make this a bit easier for people. I canceled my colonoscopy. I will say the experiences I have with their PA have been really good, but I guess I have to get another gastroenterologist. read more

I give this place one star because everyone in here has a pretty big head or they're just too smart for their desk positions. Yes, Dr. Albert is really really good but the people he works with bring this place down. I get it, sick people are difficult to deal with and don't know the proper terminology of medical procedures and lack in knowledge of their options but you're dealing with sick people. I was visiting the P.A. and had a question about bowel movements and she was clearly uncomfortable so I didn't continue with my other questions. She seems to enjoy her job as long as she isn't asked about things she doesn't like. Also, I've called and left voicemails for phone call return and no one returns my phone calls. I've tried making appointments and also nothing. They never answer the phone. read more

As has been noted by other reviewers (and even admitted to by Dr. Albert himself in his response to other reviewers), their billing department and practices are grossly incompetent. And in my case, their incompetence has negatively affected my credit score by incorrectly sending me to collections on multiple occasions. In early 2015, I was seen twice for a fairly minor stomach issue. I confirmed with my insurance company and Chicago Gastro at the time that my copay would be $20 for each visit. At each visit, I paid my $20, got a receipt, and I thought that would be the end of that. Oh boy was I wrong. Over two years later, Dr. Albert's office is claiming that I actually owed $60 for each visit, and then claimed that I owed another $60 for a third visit in April 2015, which never even happened. Let me repeat that: they tried to bill me for a visit that NEVER HAPPENED. Umm, shady much? While their office finally admitted the third visit charge was a mistake, they are still going after me two years later for a balance of $40. That's right, they've been sending me to collections and hurting my credit for the amount Dr. Albert probably makes in 10 minutes. And this is after they confirmed via email that my insurance copay was $20, and noted that the insurance company confirmed this as well. While Dr. Albert seemed competent during my visit, I am sure there are plenty of gastroenterologists in Chicago that could provide the level of care needed without negatively impacting your credit score and costing you hours of time dealing with collections agencies. read more

The 2 star review is for the overall practice. Emails go unanswered. As other people have stated they never answer the phone. Never. Don't leave a voicemail either because they won't get back to you for 2-3 days. The office staff is not pleasant either. Dr Albert is great but when you see him once for the consultation and never again it becomes frustrating. He has great bedside manner. He really knows the GI conditions and says he wants to fix the issues. The problem is, that if Dr Albert isn't around no one else works to the same level to fix the problems that he does. The PA that stood in for him at every appointment had me repeat myself multiple times and was did not listen to the complaints that I was talked about. The most frustrating part was that the PA didn't follow the same care plan that Dr Albert had given me at the consultation. The PA instead said that as long as the medications were 'maintaining things' that was the best course of action. Basically telling me being uncomfortable was what I would live with. I went there because I was uncomfortable and needed help, Dr Albert saw that but never seeing the real doctor removed me from the necessary care plan. Forcing me to seek out a new GI Practice. If only the PA followed the care plan, or read the patients charts before seeing the patient, or the Dr seeing the patients on a more regular basis - I might have stayed. read more

Dr Albert is very friendly, so he's got that going for him. But that's where it stops. His office does not, ever, answer the phone. I recently found out that they also do not call you, email you, or send you bills. They send you directly to collections. Their collections department is outsourced, so good luck there. I also had issues after my procedure with Dr. Albert. As I was still recovering, my girlfriend took a page of notes on what he found and what we should do next. At my 2 follow up appointments, I saw Libby, not Dr. Albert, and she said the exact opposite as to what we had written down, and said I had things that Dr. Albert said I did not. She then prescribed meds that were almost 1k/month (not her fault), but they did nothing. I went back to see Dr. Albert, but guess what! His office doesn't answer the phone so I showed up to another appointment with Libby, who again said the opposite of what Dr. Albert said after my procedure. It's now been almost month since I've emailed the office multiple times about the money I owe them, and they will not email me back or return calls. Thanks for ruining my credit! read more

While it can be tricky to schedule an appointment with Dr. Albert, it is worth it. He is clearly busy for a reason. He is very attentive and makes you feel like a priority. I had my endoscopy exam as well as follow visit with Dr. Albert. Both times I was impressed with how he approached my concerns and my comfort level with the plan of care in place. I'm also in the medical field so I know how hectic and busy a day can be, but I never felt rushed. So even if you are seen slightly after your actual scheduled time, it is evident that he is giving his full attention. I've waited longer for dinner before, so I'd say having a little perspective is always helpful when you're seeing a medical professional. I have seen a ton of complaints about billing for Chicago Gastro and I have to admit it is a pain in the A$$ to pay them. The sad thing about writing this review is that I actually like Dr. Albert as a person and I have always felt he provided me with good medical care....but his office policies have changed in such a way that I was forced to leave his care abruptly today. I stopped in about 3 weeks ago to pick up some med samples...at that time, the woman working the front desk asked to take a copy of my driver's license & new insurance card...said it would save time at my appointment in July. No problem! I arrived today about 5mins early for my appointment....the same woman was working the front desk and she asked to make copies of my ID and new insurance card - I reminded her that I had already had that done when I was in a few weeks earlier - she remembered. The problem? The copies she made of my driver's license & insurance card, that she remembers taking, were NOT in my patient file. This made me very uncomfortable...but the office manager then chimed in and said she was sorry but she promised that they must have accidentally been shredded. I wasn't pleased, but handed the cards back over to be copied yet again. I then was asked to fill out 2 new office forms. I did so....BUT the 2nd one required that patients write down their CC info - CC #, exp date, etc. I decided, especially after just witnessing that personal information can get misplaced or lost in the office, that leaving my CC info wasn't a safe option. Not to mention, I have insurance! I am not paying out of pocket for the visit.....why would they need a CC? I explained why I wouldn't submit this information and the woman at the front desk said she understood. I then went into the waiting area and waited...and waited...and waited...27mins later the office manager calls me back but doesn't take me to an exam room but rather the doctor's office. She said that Dr. Albert was informed of my decision to NOT provide my CC info and that he could NOT allow this - that the new office policy required it from ALL patients. I said I was sorry, explained again that I wasn't comfortable doing this. Her response was, "Well then I am sorry but you can not be seen today." I was furious! I had waited 27mins for my appointment, was told my not giving a CC # was understandable...then was told to leave. I demanded a copy of my entire file and a refund of my copay. As I was waiting for the copies at the desk, Dr. Albert came around the corner and asked what was wrong - I explained - probably not in a great tone - I was pissed! His reaction on solidifies my decision to leave his care - he said to me, "I really can't have you doing this in my waiting room." What is wrong Dr? Afraid others waiting to see you will hear that you are scamming CC #s from patients and that your office staff loose personal information on patients? To say I am disappointed in Dr. Albert and his staff would be an understatement. I have recommended him to others....I have bragged about him and how much care he takes with his patients. Now I see that all that matters to him, like most others, is their bottom line. I did a little research - because of his contract with my insurance provider, he technically is NOT supposed to be able to turn me away for not providing a CC - not when I have insurance that he is contracted with. They are going to look into it further and suggested I call a few other places (Board of Health, etc). It really is too bad....I entrusted my health to Dr. Albert for over 5years..... I believe he is a good medical professional but his office procedures, policies & staff make him one that I will never return to, recommend and I will WARN of to others! read more

Folks, listen. It is rare to find a doctor who actually cares and treats people like human beings. It took me a long time, but I finally found a GI doc in Chicago who does - Dr. Albert. Fed up with other GI docs in this city who shall remain nameless who don't listen, I started seeing Dr. Albert towards the end of 2011 after finding him right here on Yelp. I have battled an iffy stomach my entire life, but something was going on at that time that was making me incredibly sick and just didn't feel right. When I was blown off by the GI doctor I was seeing at the time, I came here for a second opinion. I remember my first appointment - I started off by asking him to please listen to me. I knew my body, and I knew something wasn't right. And listen he did. He caught something that no one else did and after getting treated I felt a thousand times better, and I will always be grateful to him for that. Since then, he's been trying to help me get to the bottom of some other stuff going on. He's patient, he listens, he actually discusses things *with* me (instead of talking at me), explains what he's thinking or why he wants to run a certain test, makes sure all my questions are answered before I leave, and I'm always left feeling informed and cared about. Bottom line: I trust him, which really wasn't easy for me to do after my awful experiences with the last two GI docs I had in this city. And best of all, he's got a sense of humor and is just an all around nice guy. He's also...available. What a concept. He is one of those rare doctors who has embraced the fact that we live in the 21st century and he emails, I can schedule appointments online without having to call (his online appointment system is the best invention ever), and he has even texted me test results before in the evening - which was unexpected but appreciated. His staff is also great, though I've really only ever dealt with Anne who is super friendly and thorough. I think he is associated with a couple different hospitals (Illinois Masonic for sure), and he also does procedures out of the 900 North Michigan medical building, which is very nice. I seriously can't recommend him enough - he is the best. read more

Dr. Albert is an extremely competent and professional MD who truly cares about the health of his patients. Before my procedure, he explained all possible diagnoses in full detail. After my tests, he did the same thing. He spent extra time explaining things to me in laypeople terms, and he let me take responsibility and power over my own health. He helped me identify the root cause of my issue rather than trying to cover up my symptoms with synthetic medications, which I really appreciate. I have had nothing but excellent experiences with Dr. Andrew Albert and his staff. I was referred to Dr. Albert by my ENT. The Chicago Gastro website says to email the office to schedule an appointment, so I sent my insurance info and availability, and we were easily able to schedule my initial visit via email. Now that I think about it, all of my communication with the office staff has been through email, and Judy and Aneela are super efficient and responsive in their communications. They initially offered to set me up with the Physician Assistant, but I chose to wait a few extra weeks to see Dr. Albert. If you're in search of a good GI doctor, do not look any further than Chicago Gastro! He is the best there is! read more

Dr. Albert and his team have been a godsend and are the reason I will never move out of Chicago! (Or if he moves somewhere, I'm going to follow him & his practice!) 5 years ago, I was in the middle of a terrible flare up that caused me to be an absolute trainwreck. I was in the hospital for several days feeling awful. Dr. Albert was the covering physician and because of his thoughtful care, I jumped ship from another doctor's practice over to Dr. Albert's practice. Dr. Albert has taken very good care of me ever since, always within an arm's reach should I need help. His staff was great at responding to my emails and Dr. Albert always allowed me to text or call his cell phone at a moment's notice, even calling on me himself at night just to check on me after a particularly rough weekend. Being a young millenial, I love having the ability to text or g-chat his practice and their response time has been pretty good. He also worked with me on my individual case, even when I fought back. He recommended surgery earlier on in my care, but I was scared of it, so he looked into alternative methods of care and pushed it off for as long as we could. He's been flexible in terms of recommending care for me that I could afford when I was struggling financially as well. I really love the care that Dana and Dr. Albert have delivered over the last 5 years to me. Dr. Albert has taken care of me and hours of his time making sure I could be the healthiest version of myself. You wouldn't even recognize me now based on the catastrophe of a patient I was at the beginning. I will never leave his practice and I would recommend every person having gastro issues to his practice as well. Thanks Dr. Albert for bringing me back to a normal state of life!! read more

Dr. Albert "seems" to be competent, professional and caring. I say this because I just met him when i had a colonoscopy. He seemed pleasant and professional. I've only met with the PA during my initial office visit and subsequent visits; and frankly, she doesn't seem comfortable discussing GI topics. Office staff is friendly; however, as others have noted, it is difficult to get in touch with them. Best method seems to be via email. At least that's been my experience. The doctor clearly knows what he's doing as far as procedures are concerned. The colonoscopy and endoscopy went smoothly, and I felt great afterwards, but not being able to actually meet and discuss issues with him has been rather disconcerting. After being told I did indeed have digestive issues, his PA sent me on my way with pills and instructions to follow my usual diet. (Side note: If you don't want to meet with the PA, you might be able to meet with Dr. Albert, but be warned, you're going to wait a month or two to do so.) Meanwhile, I've been trying to deal with these issues on my own without sound, prompt medical advice. read more

Wait times can be a bit long and the waiting room is small BUT every time I have gone to Dr. Alberts office the staff is very friendly and the care is top notch. I will gladly wait a little longer for a doctor who takes the time to answer all of my questions and who listens to my concerns. I never feel like they are just trying to get to the next patient. This is probably why the wait times are long but well worth it. When comes to your health, in my opinion, it's waiting longer is better than a doctor who isn't as personal. I didn't know how good I had it until I moved from Chicago to Springfield. Gastroenterologists are not in abundance here and I despair at finding one as good as Dr. Albert. I was his patient for 2 years after almost dying from ruptured esophageal varices. Before him, I had endured one endoscopy with no general anesthetic and much discomfort and I was still freaked out about my near-death experience when I first saw him. His friendliness, confidence, knowledge base and respect for the knowledge I had about my disease and my body, as well as choices I've made, reassured me completely that I was in good hands. His office staff was always friendly and efficient - I came to rely on Anne to smooth out difficulties with appointments, medications, etc. Her willingness to apply her I'll-take-care-of-it magic to any situation is rare in the medical world! As other reviewers have mentioned, Dr. Albert cares about his patients and even though endoscopies are never fun, his were always painless and I was never in doubt that he knew what he was doing. I haven't yet found the doctor here who will take over from Dr. Albert in helping me to manage my disease, but I know that he or she will have huge shoes to fill and I'll miss Dr. Albert greatly! read more

As a 42 year old man the last thing really on my mind is colon cancer. Went to see Dr. Albert for a small issue I was having and he suggested a colonoscopy. Well, low and behold he found some things that if went untreated, could have amounted to me having colon cancer. So, I really can't thank him enough for finding and diagnosing an issue that could have been detrimental. His staff is as kind as they come and Dr. Albert explained everything clearly to me. 1) Waiting over an hour in the waiting room 2) Doctor Albert gave a blanket observation and requested an immediate 2nd treatment of anti-biotics without providing an explanation of how to prevent the inflammation in the future. I'm no doctor, but saying "heres another round of antibiotics" without saying "do this to prevent this from happening in the future" makes ZERO sense to me. Come on Doc! What kind of show are you running here!!!! 3) Receptionists NEVER answer the phone and one receptionist didn't even answer her email for 5 days. 4) Lab work is either sent late, not at all, or to the wrong lab. See point #3 for trying to solve that while sitting at the lab (worse than sitting at a DMV). 5) I'm not making any firm accusations but my credit card was stolen shortly after I was asked for it over the phone. Have been in Dr Albert's telehealth clinic a couple of times. Dr Albert and his team are very knowledgeable. They pay attention to details to make sure they haven't missed anything. Dr Albert seems to have a packed schedule at times, but he's able to pin-point the problem and he really feels and cares about your concerns. You're not only forced to communicate with them strictly by email, but you must also first have a waste of time consultation with a nurse (oh, by the way... you don't meet dr. albert) who really doesn't want to be there either. Next, the person who schedules your procedure isn't there either, so you're asked to wait for them to contact you, which they never do (and again, you can't call THEM). Dr. Albert diagnosed me immediately with Celiac Disease after being sick for over a year and a half. I have now been his patient for TEN years and would trust no other gastroenterologist to scope me. (I drive into the city to see him now that I live in the suburbs.) I have had multiple scopes to date by Dr. Albert with absolutely no issues. He is the most down to earth doctor you will find who won't bullshit you just to make money like many do in this day and age. He is genuinely concerned for your well being and his office has been extremely accommodating, from getting appointments scheduled quickly to responding to emails, which they are on top of. In fact, when dealing with a recent condition, his office was more concerned for my well being than the doctors I was seeing to treat the issue at hand! I have no idea where these negative reviews are coming from but I can tell you this - he's a PHENOMENAL doctor and I am so thankful to have found him/glad that he has his own successful practice now. This review is not intended to evaluate Dr. Albert's medical advice, which I actually think is quite good. Rather, it is to assess the administrative capacities of his medical office, which are extremely poor. I saw Dr. Albert for a chronic condition on three occasions in early 2015, and paid his office the co-pay required by my insurer. Months later, I received a bill from Dr. Albert's billing office stating that I owed three times the amount that I paid per visit. I then spoke with my insurer, and they confirmed that I paid the correct amount for each visit. However, when I spoke with Dr. Albert's billing office and even offered to provide a screenshot of the insurer's webpage documenting the correct co-pay amount, the office refused to amend the bill and submitted the matter to collections. These bills now appear on my credit report a year later, and Dr. Albert's office has refused to correct them, even after my insurance company again confirmed the correct amount. The same discrepancy happened to another member of my family, so I'm concerned that this is a chronic problem with Dr. Albert's billing office. I may need to take legal action to finally resolve this. To avoid billing headaches, I'd strongly recommend finding a different provider. read more

This office should be embarrassed. As a potential new patient, I sent an email with a few general scheduling questions. I have an infant at home, so obviously I had some timing concerns. I sent the message at the beginning of June, 6 days go by, no response. I reached out again, to give them the benefit of the doubt, & now it's June 22nd with zero effort to get into contact with me. They definitely lost my potential business. I couldn't imagine the neglect if I were to follow-up for test results... terrible service. read more
