MY EXPERIENCE WITH DR. VAN VALIN AT ZUGAN HEALTH URGENT CARE:…read moreFor context.. I suffer from a learning disability & was put on meds for it a decade ago. I've been on my current med/seeing my current doc in LA for over 5 years. I fill my Rx ~1.5 months as I don't take it on weekends. I recently moved to SB & do not have a PCP here yet, but had 1 Rx from my doc to fill while I looked for a PCP here. I'd been waiting for my new job's insurance cards to come so I could fill it. When I went to fill my Rx, the pharmacist said it expired a few days prior (my doc mistakenly wrote the exp. for 1 mo. instead of 6 mos.). I broke down in tears in the middle of the pharmacy because I had run completely out.
Since it was Sunday & my doc is in LA, the pharmacist recommended I walk across to Zugan & show them my physical written script, my printed-out pharmacy/Rx history, & explain the situation & see if the doctor would write a new Rx. So I did. Along with my fiance, who bore witness to the entire incident.
I tearfully & politely explained my situation to the front-desk girl at Zugan & she took my paperwork to talk to the doctor in back. She came back & said that the doctor wouldn't write the Rx without seeing me as a patient. I was confused & said that's why I'm here, can't I see him now then? She repeated that he wouldn't write me the Rx & suggested I try MedCenter instead & wrote their number down on a sticky note. Feeling defeated, I started to cry again. My fiance asked her if the doctor could instead write a Rx for a few days until I can see a doctor. She said we could ask him when he came back, then disappeared.
In the meantime I reached my doctor (who was out of town) on his cell to explain & he suggested to have the doctor call him via his # on my physical Rx & he would give him my history/Rx need. ~30 min later when the girl & doc came back, I explained what I discussed with my doctor & asked her if the doctor could call. After completely refusing to ask him for 5 minutes, she finally went.
The doctor (Dr. William "Barney" Van Valin) came out from the back (dressed in a graphic t-shirt & unbuttoned shirt over it--weirdly unprofessional) & angrily snapped at me as he threw my Rx on the desk:
DR: "Is this your prescription?!"
Me: "Yes. My doctor said y.."
DR: "Look, I'm not calling your doctor! I'm not going to write this for you!"
Me: "I can't function without it."
DR: "So what? You can't concentrate? Big deal! Try harder!"
Me: "Oh my god, are you kidding me?"
I was stunned in disbelief & started bawling from how hurtful it was for a doctor to dismiss my legitimate medical condition. He also made a comment about not believing in mental health issues, but I forget exactly what it was because I was so stunned at this point.
DR: "You knew this was coming up! You shouldn't have waited!"
Me: "I have been waiting to get my new insurance cards. I only fill it every 1.5 months because I don't take it on the weekends!"
DR: "So then don't take it this weekend!"
Me: "I didn't, I'm completely out!"
DR: "Well, you shoulda planned better, GIRL!"
Condescending, misogynistic emphasis on GIRL. That was the last straw for me. I could not believe it the way I was being talked to by a "medical professional" & told him he was being an a**hoIe & to burn in helI as I left crying hysterically in utter shock from how I was spoken to/treated.
My fiance went back in a few min later to settle a bill & to talk to the doctor about his behavior. My fiance is the nicest, most polite person you will ever meet. He (bless his heart) tried to explain to the doctor the struggle of learning disability & the doctor said he "didn't believe in mental health disorders." (Hello, you're a doctor!) My fiance told him regardless, it was unacceptable how he spoke to & treated me & that his bedside manner was atrocious. The doctor snapped, "What do you know about bedside manner?!" My fiance is a resident doctor. The doctor then said that no PCP in SB would ever prescribe someone controlled medication & that if any did, it would be him--if I were to see him as my PCP. (Uh.) He then said he couldn't prescribe it at Zugan, but he could see me at his PCP office in Buellton the next day. First, NEVER. I do not feel safe in the same room as a man with that kind of hate toward women & disbelief in mental health. Second, why was that response not his explanation to ME instead of the degrading, condescending vitriol he spewed at me earlier?!
As a doctor, you take an oath to do no harm. This doctor absolutely harmed me. He verbally assaulted, degraded, demeaned & humiliated me & yet Zugan's response is that they treated me "compassionately." No. Not by any stretch of the imagination. This type of behavior--let alone by a DOCTOR--is absolutely disgusting & unconscionable!
