I recorded all conversations, so I would advise others to be cautious and ask for clear explanations in writing whenever possible. If you're looking for a lawyer who gives poor advice, makes assumptions about your employment even after reviewing your pay stubs and work history, and questions what you do for work simply because you drive a nice car, then this was my experience. As my lawyer, making comments like, "Do you drive Uber or work for someone?" instead of reviewing the actual facts felt unprofessional and discriminatory.

I had left a message for a return call as well as I texting back the new counselor. Case was simple enough but the retainer was eaten up in unnecessary calls I had to make. The previous counselor (resigned) had told me a plea would be prearranged but it apparently was not discussed until the day of my trial. My retainer? I actually owe them money which is insulting to say the least. The counselor who originally did my case charged for services which were moot and had to be redone. But of course I had to pay for it.

During our phone call, he made it sound like he would work with the prosecutor to arrange a deal where the ticket would go away after six months with a small fine. There was no mention of traffic school or that I would need to sign a formal plea-in-abeyance agreement. When he later sent me the plea agreement, I was surprised to see the traffic school requirement included, since that hadn't been discussed. The "small fine" he referred to also turned out to be the standard $280 plea-in-abeyance fee paid directly to the court, which I understand is the same amount I likely would have paid even if I had handled the case myself. Having been through traffic court before and having a clean driving record, I knew this was a very standard deal that I likely could have received on my own by appearing in court. I texted him to let him know that traffic school and signing a plea agreement hadn't been explained beforehand and that this was something I could have handled myself. He didn't respond to those concerns and continued sending the agreement for signature. I eventually signed it, but not happily, because I ended up paying for representation that mainly saved me the trip to the courthouse. My advice: if you have a clean driving record and are comfortable appearing in court yourself, you may be able to get the same outcome without paying attorney fees. This service was really only helpful in avoiding a court appearance.

Matt charged me $250 and helped reduce a misdemeanor and two traffic violations, which carried the…read morepossibility of up to 100 days in jail and over $500 in fines, into a single non moving violation with no points on my license. I ultimately paid a $180 fee instead of facing jail time or significant fines. The situation started after I bought a brand new car that was the same make, model, and color as my previous one, just a few years newer. I believed I could transfer my existing plates since they were already registered to me. While taking the new car out, I briefly lost traction for less than a second. I was not speeding. I was pulled over by an officer who immediately escalated the situation and issued multiple citations. Even after I explained that the plates were mine and showed registration for the other vehicle, as well as a purchase receipt to show I was waiting for the title to register it. I was given several tickets for exhibition of speed, using plates from another vehicle, and failure to operate in one lane rather than being informed of the proper DMV process despite the real incident and proof. Matt stepped in and handled everything professionally. He was able to get the charges reduced and protect my license, which I am extremely grateful for. Communication could be improved as his responses were sometimes very delayed, but he did follow up before court and delivered real results when it mattered. I hired Michael Black to handle a civil matter that started in late 2014 and continued into the…read moreearly months of 2015. A relative was friendly with one of the lawyers in this office, and when I was faced with a sudden legal nightmare Young Kester Black & Jube were able to schedule an appointment the same day I called. In our case mediation or an out of court settlement was not an option because the opposing parties were completely unreasonable. So we knew pretty quickly that we were going to court. Mike was exceptionally well-prepared for a hearing that turned into a mini bench trial. He took an entire day to prepare, meeting me and an expert witness for several hours to go over the facts of the case and prepare our strategy. His research and preparation was in my opinion critical in our eventually winning the case and the judge entirely rejecting the claims of the opposing parties. In court his conduct was professional, which in my estimation seemed to impress the judge more than the mud-flinging of the opposing counsel. It also seems to be the office policy of Young, Kester Black & Jube to keep the client's costs down in hopes of getting return customers, rather than milking each case for every last dollar. For example, Mike encouraged me to prepare photos for evidence because I could do it free rather than paying him to do it. Friends who've hired lawyers have told me that my experiences were unsual in this regard, and it's more common for lawyers to use any excuse to tack charges on to their bills. This was a pleasant surprise, as I'd never needed a lawyer before and was expecting to pay a lot more than I did. It wasn't exactly cheap, but the overall costs were lower than I'd anticipated. I was very satisfied with this office, and have already recommended them to several people who've needed legal help. My only complaint would be a possible half-star (or even quarter star) deduction for something that was probably partly my fault. As someone with zero court experience, it would've been nice to get a little more rookie-level guidance at the start. Even something like an email or a preprinted sheet with bullet point items for a first time client: "Do this, Don't do that, here's what to expect from the proceses." It's a minor complaint and Mike was always timely in answering questions and explained things in a way a layperson could easily understand. Maybe it's just the way my brain works, but it would've been nice to see more of the big picture or flow chart from day 1 so I knew what to expect.
