It first caught my attention on our first night in Sydney back in February while we were heading towards Chinatown when I realized that there was a huge line for what appeared to be frozen yogurt. A few nights later, our last night in Sydney, my son and I were finishing up dinner and looking for a treat. We remembered Freo and headed over. It was a Friday night around 9p, and when we got there the line was stretching out the door. We decided to wait. The anticipation built as we got inside, continued to make our way to the frozen yogurt and then to the counter with all of the toppings. In addition to a lot of the usual toppings, they had whole lychee, which was a wonderful surprise. We loaded up and found a seat outside. The yogurt was amazing - the perfect creamy texture with a wonderful tart flavor. It's the closest thing I've had to Yogorino in all these years, and a wonderful treat to end our adventures in Australia.

Like a shining oasis the Mondo Gelato bar appeared infront of me. Framed by two escalators this little place is more of a grab and go spot than somewhere to lounge around next to, though there are a few bar stools and high tables available. The counter showed a range of gelato tubs, all the flavours sounding better than the last. I plumped for a white chocolate and hazelnut scoop in a cone (though you can also get them in a cup) and was quickly transported to 7th heaven. It just hit the spot and provides something ideal for those out shopping in need of a pick-me-up. For those who can't get enough, the gelato is available to buy in 1/2 litre tubs too. What's more, there's also a chocolate fountain. You can have it the chocolate drizzled on strawberries, bananas, in a cup or on a Belgian waffle. These guys know shoppers all too well... Chocolate smudged thumbs up!

Besides the advantage of choosing everything you like and having control over what ratios you want for the flavours, the actual frozen yogurt itself is great! It's not too milky like Icecream which makes it a bit lighter to eat. My recommendation is fresh strawberries and original yogurt. It's simple but a winner combination!

I didn't get a strong espresso flavor as it would have, but the ratio of almond bits and gelato was just right - occasionally crunchiness hidden within the creaminess of gelato. The second flavor we ordered was the poached strawberry with balsamic vinegar. The acidity from balsamic vinegar and strawberry was muted yet complimented the gelato base. It was not too sweet, yet there's a hint of the balsamic vinegar and strawberry. We were too busy getting into the gelato before taking a picture, but check out this place if you are nearby. The staff was very patient with us as my sister wanted to order a milkshake which is different in the States compared to Australia. My sister wanted to make sure that what she expected in a milkshake would be understood and reciprocated to the staff. Even though they don't normally make a milkshake like the States do, they did their best. I enjoyed my ice cream and it was perfect to end the night.

I don't eat a lot of froyo, but it the actual frozen yogurt was nicer than what I've had at other shops. I do agree that froyo tends to be a different type of sweet compared to ice cream and gelato. I would definitely go for round two. They serve the froyo and put on the toppings on for you here. It's determined by size and toppings (rather than the weight). It was something like $4 for the small cup (which is quite big) and then either .50 for a single topping, or just $1 for as many toppings as they can fit. I had about 4 toppings on mine and could have fit more if I wanted. So can be a bit more expensive if you didn't want a larger serving, but generally seemed like standard prices.

Besides ice cream, they sell other diary products like smoothies/ yogurt. There are lots of ice cream flavors but nothing too exciting. (boo) However, I was thankful that they were patient with my "multiple" requests to try different flavors. I ended up with "mango" flavor - hmmmm, it was good but a little too sweet for my liking and it's not as smooth as Gelato Messina (boo). Okie, I gotta stop comparing. Note that there are both ice cream AND gelato. There are also calories (or KJ) written next to the flavors. You see it is just too convenient (read: dangerous) having a New Zealand Natural ice cream shop right at the entrance to Town Hall Station.
