The instrument we were given was determined by the music program's director and assistant to be, instead, a violin. I obtained a third opinion at Encore Music, and was informed by the teacher there as well that the instrument we had been given is (i.e., was strung as) a violin. I brought it back today for a refund of pro-rated rental fee (from what I had paid upfront). Note that I asked the assistant at the store to identify the instrument for me before telling him the problem; he identified it as a violin. When I explained the reason for the return, he then said that it is a viola, and brought it to the proprietor, who insisted that it was a viola all along. I insisted on the return, but they did not refund me the tax I pre-paid, and also charged me for a full 3 months' payment instead of the 2.5 months it has been. Overall, this has been a frustrating waste of time and money. There are many other options for instrument rentals in the area and I recommend you use a different one.

I currently go to their studio once a week for lessons. Listening for the right pitch and music theory has always been harder for me, but Evie and her husband Matt are some of the best teachers in the area. They actually not only teach high-level piano and violin, but Evie specializes in double bass and Matt in trumpet. Both at the professional orchestra symphony level. Evie's super knowledgeable, patient but firm, and you can tell she has a lot of experience and a passion for the art. I feel what makes her special is she has a great pace when demonstrating things, and it's in a very concise and deliberate manner. Matt has a wealth of experience and has taught me a lot about music theory. He's very intuitive and smart. I think he's extremely attuned and aware of what students need and when they aren't understanding something. And like Evie, he's able to break things down, but in a detailed fashion. Each time we went he charged us a little more until finally on the third time, charged us per head (even someone who just came in to use the bathroom) and said that he was giving us a "discount" on what the price should've been. Paid about $65 the first time and paid about $130 the third time. How does that make sense at all for the same space and same amount of people?? Please save yourself the time and money.
