When I went to Southerland Place and toured the facility I knew this was the place. Their executive director, Sam Stoddard, took time to walk down the hall to say hello and make sure someone was helping me. Later as I talked with him, I could tell he was a man of integrity and cared about his residents. Then I met Courtney, their sales manager, she has a great personality and knew all of the residents by name. As I toured, I tried to watch how the staff interacted with the residents and was impressed with love they showed to each individual. We had lunch with the managing staff and really enjoyed the food and company. They even let the residents help with planning the menu as the chef came out during lunch to discuss options for the next week. Larry and Rena deal with the assessment and all nursing type stuff. They listened and treated my loved one with respect. Nancy, the business manager, has been a great help with getting the proper paperwork needed for long term care insurance. Her door is always open, if you have any questions. When we moved in Sam and Ronnie helped with the move. Ronnie is the manager of maintenance and is quick to help you with any request you may have. It has been 2 months since my loved one moved in and they love the place. The family has seen a big improvement in our loved one mental and physical state. The activities are great! They have had a Senior Prom, Bingo, Card games and other things to stimulate the minds of their residence. At lunch the staff came in and provided entertainment by hula hooping and even Sam got in there and gave it try. My loved one laughed and still gets a chuckle when thinking about it. One last thing that has impressed me is when I see Courtney she always ask how we are liking the place and if there is anything that the Southerland Place can do to make it a better place. I like this because it shows that they are always trying to improve the place. If you are in need of an assisted living facility I strongly recommend The Southerland Place.

My 80 year old wife spent an excruciating six weeks at The Pearl at Watkins Centre (fancy name)…read moreMemory Center in Midlothian, Va between late Nov and Dec,2025. She and I both could not wait to get her out of there. Total neglect from the staff, (except George who is the only employee that I saw who actually cared), from top to bottom. Ashley, chief person in charge, Jemel, next person in line, ignored my telephone calls. My wife was sick between Christmas and New Years. She had diarrhea and vomiting. She couldn't make it to the toilet. She pulled the emergency cord in the bathroom. No response until the next morning when a staff person finally showed up. When she asked for someone to clean up the mess that person told her, "that's not my responsibility" and left the room. Another major area of concern was her security. From the get go her room was unsecured. Her key fob did not work from day one. Consequently, other residents would come into her room during the day and in the middle of the night. She was very frightened in the middle of the night. We found a so much better place to take her. Literally night and day. Spring Arbor in Midlothian. I have since found out that 5 other people from Pearl had escaped and were living there. I think this facility should be either greatly improved or shut down. I am sending this message to the appropriate state regulatory agencies in Va. Bottom line. If you care about your loved one, DO NOT take them to Pearl. Over the last year of my life, I have sat at my laptop more times than I can count to write this…read morereview. Sharing what I saw is excruciating and I want to be very clear. Please, I beg of you, you must not consider this facility, The Pearl at Watkins, for your family member. I did not have a family member at The Pearl at Watkins, but I learned to love many residents struggling to survive the unspeakable inhumanness of the "care" given by The Pearl at Watkins staff while I worked there. I was hired by an outside source. A family hired me to visit their father once a week for therapy. There were many weeks, I visited more then once, on my own time, to assure his safety. At times I found their father hunched and falling out of his wheelchair. Their father needed help eating his meals from Parkinsons disease and I would find him with an untouched plate of food because no one would help him eat a meal. "IF" I found him in a clean diaper, he was not wiped clean after bowel movements and his bottom was covered in feces with a clean diaper over the soiled and infected skin. I witnessed the maintenance man administering medications to residents on multiple occasions because The Pearl at Watkins was "short on staff". I found my patient drugged and The Pearl at Watkins and given medication without communication with the family. I was given permission to enter and do my work when families were not permitted visitation during Covid. I had to bring my own hand soap and I found many residents unkempt. The neglect and deterioration of residents during Covid was unbearable. I have years of stories and this is just a review. I can promise you that the day you tour The Pearl at Watkins will not be the environment you leave your loved one in. The website shows a fireplace and I have never seen it turned on once during my years of visiting. The Pearl at Watkins is a new facility so the reviews of it being clean means nothing. Your loved one is in danger at the Pearl at Watkins and I need to stress that while the revolving door of individuals hired to care for your loved ones are beyond oppressive, the root of neglect and criminal behaviors lies within the managing staff and Pheonix Senior Living company.

I had been interested in what they might have available in for my mom in assisted living. This facility had been recommended by a nurse so that was even more reason for my interest. I decided since no one responded to my calls I would just go in person. I stood at the front desk this afternoon at 240 for 2 minutes while the receptionist bad mouthed another employee on the telephone. I was never even acknowledged. Needless to say I walked out. I experienced all I need to know.

This place is not a good place to work. I am a current employee and I have so many negative things…read moreto say in regard to this location and the company itself. I truly love all the residents and it's been such a pleasure working with them and caring for them. There is no night supervision, our current supervisor Edwin, is not reliable in any way. He has poor management skills, consistently makes schedules with short staff, does not communicate in a timely manner, and he's very dismissive. This place needs more staff and they need a new supervisor. Residents have even complained about his lack of communication and professionalism. They do not care about the residents at all, they treat the place like a hospital and not like the residents homes. Cooperate hasn't been very helpful with dealing with staff in regard to placing employees on a heavy floor with over 8+ residents who is total care and needs assistance. Morning shift (7-3) leaves trash in residents rooms, and I who works (3-11) has to pick up after them all the time. They don't take care of them at all and it's just about the money to them. The benefits are horrible, they don't help with healthcare if you have injuries on the job, they said they offer tuition reimbursement but every time I asked they stated "we can't do that", they even removed all bonuses. No holiday pay, no extra bonus for overtime, they took it all because the company is in debt. This place needs to be studied and to get on the right track. I do not recommend this job for anyone, but I will say the amazing residents always helps me through it and keeps me happy. The place is nice and very modern, includes a movie theatre, art room, music room, gym, salt room, bingo room, and a lovely dining hall.. but looks can be deceiving. Memory care staff is also very horrible. They throw the residents around and treat them any kind of way just because the residents may forget or don't know any better but they are still people's families. They cuss, and bad mouth them and it's so sad to see. I love all the residents and treat them as if they were my own family. I am currently seeking a better place of employment, but I just wanted to tell the truth and look out for any people who consider working here or bringing their families.

My mother who suffered from dementia needed a special residential facility and we chose Southerland…read morePlace because they do a good sales job and have ONE good nurse. Beware. This facility paid very little attention to my mother. Her personal items were stolen from her room. She had very few activities to participate in (as compared with Arden Courts in Northern Virginia). Granted, this place cost a lot less than Arden Courts, but they do not do what they advertise. In addition to what I felt was a sad lack of interaction, when my mother became gravely ill, the staff at Southerland Place didn't call me. The first I heard was from the hospital where she was taken, and by that time several hours had passed and it was too late. My mother died alone because this facility didn't take the time, or care enough, to contact my family. Then, after she had passed away, we had another battle with moving furniture out of her room and they continued to bill us AND BILL LATE CHARGES AFTER SHE WAS DEAD. In fact, I just received an additional invoice for personal services 4 months after she died. Really, unless this is close to your home and you are able to visit several times a week, I would not choose this facility, nor would I recommend it. And if you should go and visit and think the staff is nice, do yourself a favor and go onto the internet onto whistle blower websites and read about the management. Not a good situation.
