Still, it beats running all the way into town for 1 or 2 simple items & it'll be a convenient stop for those traveling down the future wine corridor (if that ever comes to full fruition). They carry a surprisingly diverse selection of goods, some of which seem really random or outa place (e.g. Abuelita brand chocolate autentico de Mexico. Ya wont always find that @ Albertson's). I came for some BBQ sauce, which I needed to resurrect some dry smoked beef ribs from the other night - did the trick & only took a few minutes to get it. The staff is friendly & the place is never packed (usually you'll be the only one in the joint), though this could easily change if they brought their prices down from the stratosphere (dont hold your breath). It's just nice to know there's @ least 1 place to stop on River Rd for some refreshments, gas, & random goods. Having an address for this place is useless, as you'll have to spot them by sight -they're in the tiny Buena Vista shopping center across from the entrance to Indian Springs Ranch. If you see the entrance to the Wild Things animal park/facility, you've gone too far.

Martinez Farms seems to be the principal supplier of strawberries to the Monterey Market. I was…read morecurious about them and feared that they were growing strawberries in Martinez, CA, the seat of Contra Costa County and a much-reviled place by citizens who drive there for jury duty and permit applications. Not to worry: this is a family-run organic farm not far from Watsonville and "Martinez" is the family name. For example, Esteban Martinez is the person to contact for sales information. I've been trying to decide whether I have a preference among the various organic strawberries that are currently available at the Monterey Market. The providers include Swanton Berry Farm, Blue Moon Organic, Martinez, and maybe more. My impression has been that the Martinez berries are slightly more robust than those of the competition. In terms of texture, they're a very tiny step in the direction of the indestructible commercial strawberries that are shipped far and wide. On the other hand, they taste great, so I can see why the Monterey Market seems to prefer them. What makes a good strawberry? There are a large number of varieties out there, and it seems that growers are somewhat secretive about what they are planting. The article http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2006/05/03/FDG87IIOC31.DTL about Blue Moon Organics includes the sentence "Just weeks before picking time, their heirloom berries -- a variety whose name they won't divulge -- were pelted with rain." The Martinez web site lists four varieties of strawberries that they grow -- Camarosa, Diamante, Seascape and Pajaro -- but I'll bet that there are secret clones and what have you. I imagine that growing strawberries is like making chardonnay, where you get to choose your root stock, your berries and your yeast. Of course, there's probably a contribution of terroir to the taste of strawberries, and I'm sure as well that the best berries need a lot of babying. One day, this industry will probably acquire a Robert Parker-type reviewer who will assign numerical scores to berries. I'll give these a 98.

Well, it's always easy for me to find this farm's bounty in going to the Ferry Farmers' market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. They started participating in the market about two years ago and, at first, I mainly only bought strawberries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=JO1Cnr4pkcFCVEEfFkGKYA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) from them. Over the past eighteen months, I've become an avid fan of their vegetables especially their cauliflower (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=gC_FKh5f_f7M2Gj7ZbUB4A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), cabbage, broccoli, and broccolini. I generally cook them within the week to preserve their freshness in flavors and textures, after all they are organic. And, when tomatoes are back in season, check whether they offer their self made salsas. They have become one of my weekly and sometimes twice weekly shopping stops at the Ferry Building. Do look for their stand by the main building entrance on the north side on Tuesdays and along the south driveway at Saturdays.
