Manmaruya Ashfield - Pork Karaage Ramen

Awhile back I was taken to Manmaruya in Campsie and really enjoyed my bowl of ramen but was quite…read moreshocked at the sub standard level of service we received there. This time we gave Manmaruya in Ashfield a try for lunch. Just across the road and a short walk up Liverpool St from Ashfield mall. FOOD I shared a large Teriyaki Chicken Ramen ($14.80) and a Soft Shell Crab roll ($9.80) whilst the others ordered a Chicken Katsu Curry ($12.80), Pork Karaage Ramen ($12.80) and a large Cha-syu Ramen ($14.80). http://www.yelp.com.au/biz_photos/1uWOnSumYcCFt4G_TRrptg?select=ZkxW7Oe3-KJbltrXYskPZw http://www.yelp.com.au/biz_photos/1uWOnSumYcCFt4G_TRrptg?select=WmpErIg4qfZEH3X78JIyyw http://www.yelp.com.au/biz_photos/1uWOnSumYcCFt4G_TRrptg?select=RVFg9jB6Ht0NJGKa9VnqRA http://www.yelp.com.au/biz_photos/1uWOnSumYcCFt4G_TRrptg?select=Qtjjn-psYhib8uvgaZl-AA http://www.yelp.com.au/biz_photos/1uWOnSumYcCFt4G_TRrptg?select=oRf113-NLeOlwA7FSkwoaQ Manmaruya's speciality is their ramen. For me the most important thing about ramen is the soup. Manmaruya has both pork and chicken soups. I personally always go for the more traditional pork based soup. I really enjoyed the one here as it is still tasty and flavoursome but at the same time not too salty unlike other ramen restaurants. The Soft Shell Crab roll was probably not the best tasting roll I've eaten but satisfied my craving for sushi that day. However it was well presented and I am definitely one to appreciate pretty looking food. Overall I thought the food is reasonably priced and the serving size was decent. SERVICE Unlike the Campsie branch this one was far less busy and so we did not have to wait to be served. The food came out within 10mins of ordering as well. VERDICT I think this is one of the better ramen places in Sydney and would recommend ramen lovers out there to give this place a try.

The staff feel under trained and kept forgetting to bring us drinks ans desert. The food was tasty…read moreand affordable.

I usually prefer my beef medium rare, but it got mixed with the pork, so everything got cooked well done. If my beef was cooked medium rare, this would probably be a 5 star review. Sirloin Beef $39 AUD - Beautifully marbled. Marinated Beef Ribs $36AUD - This was good and had generous meat. We ordered too much meat, but amazingly we finished it all, so it had to have been really good. Cheese Corn Side Dish - Okay, too cheesy for me. I bet very few people say that, lol. Tofu Side Dish - I am not a tofu or soup person, so I did not try. They have both Korean and Australian beers, thank you. I chose to drink the local beers, as the Korean brand beers were the same as the U.S. Support locals. Atmosphere - Small local restaurant. Indoor/outdoor seating were very limited. Semi-open kitchen, see picture. You will be crammed in to maximize space. Open 7 days a week from 11am to 10:30pm. Not sure if they have bathrooms; sorry I can not remember and I did not take a picture. Service - Full service. They actually cook the food for you at your table. Both the owner and waiter cooked for us. I really appreciated that. But I am also sure they do that to turn the tables faster, good business practice. Win/win. Price - See menu, Korean foods are always a little on the expensive side, but when you take into consideration the current US exchange rate, it was a sale for us. :) Owner Comment - Congrats on your success.

Being an eggs benedict addict I always get the benedict, nice generous servings with runny eggs. My wife is a bit more adventurous and has tried multiple things and it is always nice. There is inside and outdoor seating with also bar seating inside. We normally come here with a group of around 8 and we can fit comfortably. Overall fantastic local cafe where you can reliably get a good meal and coffee.

There is a current fab in cafes to have expensive plates with not that much food on it. Not this place! Good sized portions for the same price you'd pay elsewhere. I order the Avo on toast - yes I don't want to buy a house - and it was really good. The coffee here was not fantastic, but was good. Clearly not as good as the food. However, saying that, probably best coffee in the area. Just make sure you are a milk drinker - as the coffee is not that good to order espresso. The service is quite, especially with how crowded it gets. But if you want a seat you might either have to wait for a bit or try to come outside the popular times. Either way this place is worth the visit.

Shredded pork with pickled vegetables - Someone was craving soup, I did not try, but they seemed to like it. Shanghai pan fried pork buns - My favorite. Good proportions with bread and filling. Shanghai salted pork and veg fried rice - Not good or bad, the dish did not stand out, fairly plain but good enough as a comfort dish. String beans with dried shrimp - Gotta have some veggies, same as above. Shanghai stir fried noodles - Another one of my favorite dishes, love those noodles. Tea from real tea leaves, see picture. Atmosphere - Medium size restaurant. Some portions of the restaurant sectioned off, potentially for private events. Open kitchen & open kitchen counter seating. Cool decor. Open 7 days a week from 11am to 8:30pm or 9pm; website hours differ. Direct competitor next door, you might be putting them out of business? Service - Okay, went out of our way to get the waitress and manager attention to let us pay. Our guests are aggressive, and we wanted to make sure we paid. The team was slightly confused, so I had to check with the waitress and manager several times to get their assurances that we were paying. Membership, loyalty program. See website. Price - After all that fighting for the bill, I signed the check in a hurry and did not even know what I paid. I'm guessing $150AUD, $100US...? Which I believe includes tax and tip? Sorry, can't remember. I just remembered being frazzled... Reasonable price for what we got. Owner Comment - Congrats on your 12 locations and growing! Oh, are you a franchise system? There are some outstanding dishes (XLB) and the prices are quite reasonable for the portion size as compared to other restaurants in Sydney. + Really delicious XLB. Compared to Din Tai Fung's XLB (which I had in Seattle area), I think I enjoyed these more. Soup was good, the filling was nice and smooth. The skin was thin but not as fragile and I even enjoyed the thicker bit where the XLBs are sealed. + Weekday lunch specials are a great deal (~$9.80). + Dishes are prepared quickly without sacrificing quality and presentation. + Pastry with red bean paste was also very good as a dessert. The sesame seeds on top add a nice nuttiness to the flaky pastry.
