This is a real Post Office located withing the historic GPO Building. I wandered over after our "Rebel Rising" tour, looking for some interesting stamps or special issue merchandise. The An Post lobby is impressive, historic, and cavernous, with displays on various stamp and other offerings in front. There's even a special window for the special issue stuff of which I purchased a quality Wizard of Oz/Postal Christmas trinket. read more

It's next to the museum but here, this is a fully operational post office. And that's what I needed today as I needed stamps for postcards! International stamps aren't cheap - €2 each for first class air mail stamps. Ouch. I got ten. It's a beautiful lobby that looks like it's been restored back to it's original brass and marble fittings. There is a poster in the lobby with a picture of the outside from 1814-1818, "Headquarters of the Irish Post Office for nearly 200 years. Dublin's General Post Office is one of the city's great buildings." The young lady who sold me the stamps was friendly and efficient. The machine took my American credit card easily. It isn't just a regular old post office. This building, the steps and enormous pillars, played a significant role in the 1916 Easter Uprising and the Irish struggle for independence. There are still bullet marks on the pillars. The interior has been completely renovated and is a fully operational post office. We didn't tour the museum inside but we should have. No time, sadly. The architecture of this iconic building is impressive. But historically, the building is more than just a post office. It's on O'Connell Street and is probably the largest building there. I am reviewing the museum, since that is what I came for. It's a superb way to learn about the rising and the civil war and all the historic figures. Do get the audio- it's only a Euro. You'll really benefit from it. There's a superb movie in there as well- a recreation of the events of 1916, do watch it. It's compelling. This is a sad time in Irish history- so to say I "enjoyed" it is wrong- but I learned a lot and I was moved. There's a lovely monument on floor 0 (most of the museum is on -1) which commemorates the youngest victims- including a little girl shot in her mother's arms. The entire history is here, for those who take the time to go through slowly. It's not cheap- but it's well worth it. You go through stations (1-19, if I recall) and listen at each one. There's also free wifi and a cafe on 0 (gift shop is on 0 as well-and they have some unique items- very well priced.) read more

Once I went in there for a particular type of envelope that they were supposed to have and they told me to try another post office. I left wondering how surely the supreme post office of all irish post offices wouldn't have what I needed. The heart of Dublin City. This Christmas season, it has been wonderful to come through here. I walked into an impromptu carolling session, two men were playing instruments beside the display and a girl said she would like her auntie to go up and sing a song, so they allowed it and my goodness, she had a beautiful voice. What a lovely thing to see at Christmas time. The GPO has stood strong in Dublin, and will be commemorated during the 1916 celebrations this year. Definitely something to check out. It is a normal run of the mill post office selling stamps, posting letters and parcels and all those other post office services on offer. However, the great thing about our GPO are the bullet holes in the columns and the history surrounding the place. Please note, this is a review of An Post in general, and not the historic GPO building. It's posted under this address because this is An Post's spiritual (if not administrative) and customer service HQ. There's a lot to love and a lot to loathe about An Post. Ireland's postal service is reasonably competitive in world terms, both in postage prices and delivery times. They have plenty of outlets where you can mail stuff, although they need to be open longer and also need to let more stores sell stamps. I've been impressed a couple of times when letters have reached Australia in a matter of days. Speedy. Mail coming in from overseas is another story altogether, and if you have a problem, especially somewhere in the overlapping gray area where the customs service (run by Revenue) finishes and An Post begins, GOD HELP YOU. An absolute abyss of woeful hold music, non-committal staff, unanswered emails and long delays. read more

It's not just stamps, letters and postal orders; this iconic post office on O' Connell Street is intrinsically woven into the fabric of this republic. If it had ears it would have heard the bombs & bullets of the 1916 Irish uprising and the 1966 explosion that obliterated Nelson's pillar which had been there since 1809. The rebels did try to blow up the pillar in 1916 but the explosives were damp and wouldn't ignite. That's our maritime climate for ya. Built (and largely rebuilt) mostly of granite with Portland stone at the front, it will be 200 years old in 2018. O' Connell Street was originally Sackville Street. The leaders of the 1916 rising used it as the headquarters of the rebellion. The still bullet - holed front of it is 220 foot long with an Ionic portico of 6 fluted Ionic columns. As you look at the acroteria of the pediment there are three statues; Mercury the god of financial gain & commerce, with his Caduceus and purse; the Virtue Fidelity on the right (my word is my bond) with a hound at her feet and a key held in her right hand and Hibernia resting on her spear and holding a harp. It has a new visitor centre, which has replaced the museum, to commemorate the 1916 Rising. In commemoration of the Rising, a statue depicting the death of the mythical Irish hero Cúchulainn which was sculpted in 1911 was sited at the command post in the centre of the GPO main hall and is now housed in the front of the building. Iconic history aside, the ironic truth is that ground rent for this GPO continued to be paid to English and American landlords until the 1980s. Funny old world. read more

This is a review of Anpost's AddressPal Service. I have a few items sent to AddressPal UK and AddressPal US. AddressPal Uk is a decent service. But stay away from AddressPal US. They are a terrible service. I shipped a few items to them, including dog food. They opened the items and closed them improperly. They put a knife thought a sealed back of dog food, did not even bother to close it, closed the box, and sent to Ireland. The food arrived completely damaged and when I contacted them, they informed me the bag was inappropriate for shipping and that they did open it. I sen them pictures of the box wrapped with AddressPal tape and they kept saying it was not them. I do not recommend them. it is not a good service. read more

As a small business owner this company rejected one of my consignments due to customs issues. I spoke to Karen who works for their twitter customer service dept and Chelsea (ecommchargequery AT anpost.ie) and neither were willing to help me beyond their standard templated replies. At a time when small businesses are struggling to get to grips with new customs laws, they were very unhelpful and i'll be writing to the CEO of An Post to explain how they should be helping their customers rather than fob them off with excuses. read more

I've always had a love/hate relationship with An post. When its right, its right. Usually the service is quick, national post generally seems to arrive within a day or two. I think some utiliy bills actaully arrive on the day of posting, however nice warm fuzzy letters and packets take a few days later. Price wise, I moan and complain about the exorbitant prices they charge me to ship a pair of socks to Canada.. and then I recieve a packet containing 2 feathers from Canada and see the sender has actually taken out a loan to pay for the delivery. So I won't complain much about the prices any more. If you go into a post office, the staff are usually ok. They often have that "dreaming of a life far-away" look, but sure, so do I these days and I don't even have to deal with whinging customers. My review is actually promted by a mess up on thier part. I'd like to even go so far as to accuse them of being dishonest. I guess I can't accuse the whole place of dishonesty, but something fishy is going on in my area! I'm an avid Amazon shopper. Normally I get it sent to the OH's work this way I don't have to go down to the depot to pick up my parcels at some god-aweful hour of the morning before work.. however, with it being a gaggle of pressies for the OH, I thought it best to get it shipped home. Over the xmas period I expected 5 parcels, but recieved 4. As I work, I wasn't at home, so got those nifty little green delivery notices throught the door. Each time I went down I enquired "Are you sure there's nothing else for me there? I'm expecting a box from Amazon", only to be told no, that was it. Christmas came and went, and I assumed it was stuck in some backlog somewhere. Finally I checked my Amazon account closer and it turns out that I can pop my tracking number into the An Post website to track my parcel. So I did. They say they tried to deliver on Dec 20, and Jan 3, and then they returned it. I call shenanigans!!!! Liars!!! I may have missed you on the 20th, but where's the little green paper, huh?? I am pretty sure I was home on the 3rd.. but even if I wasn't, where's the little green paper?? Shame on you Mr Postal Delivery guy. Your dishonest, and you make me upset at my OH not having his pressies, and you've also cost Amazon money as they, with thier awesome customer service, are re-posting me out a new parcel. It took them 20 minutes to do this, but thats a whole other review! I would have given you a 4 star, but now you just get 2. Liar liar pants on fire! read more

I have lost faith in humankind and I am leaving now. After I left a complaint on the An Post facebook page, concerning a lost package I sent to New York last summer to my now ex-girlfriend, I received my package several months later marked as 'undelivered' to my house. I blame the loss of this relationship entirely on An Post for their lack of service but the brutal, heartless return of my present which is now worthless in this context, is an insult. What the fuck am I to do with it? If this was a restaurant, it would be the equivalent of ordering a spring roll starter and receiving it a week late, moldy and heartbroken.. However, following on from this event, I have since found love in other places, namely with couriers for their impeccable punctuality and cool motorbikes. An Post no longer has a place in my heart and I wish you all the best. Yet the dogs will be let loose when the postmen come knocking and blood will pave the path to my doorstep like a glorious red velvet carpet leading up towards a kingdom of eternal complexity uncomprehendingly wonderful, only reachable by the most efficient couriers. Together we will outlive An Post and reach new heights- much like that book 'Johnathan Livingston Seagull'... I will return to using An Post, but you will not recognize me, I will be using a different name with a different motive, that being to educate and free you from the conservative, monotonous system that fails you time and time again. I literally dork out on historical buildings every chance I get , so to me the fact I can get all of my postal needs taken care and be surrounded by a building which saw one of the many things in Irish history I am completely obsessed with in one fell swoop.... How could you not love this building....it is full of history and has to be one of the most attractive Post Offices in the world. I haven't used this Post Office very often but the fact it has more open kiosks than local PO's i've never have to wait to long. The museum is relatively cheap...€2 for entry....but not sure if this is about the building and history surrounding it or if is about stamps & postage. The GPO is one of Ireland's most famous buildings, and was the last of the great Georgian public buildings erected in the capital. It is the headquarters of the Irish postal service, An Post, and Dublin's principal post office. I have often made a point of walking a little bit further than necessary just to experience the sheer splendour of this imposing post office when I could have easily gone somewhere less out of my way to post my letter. I can rarely resist the opportunity to undertake a task as commonplace as posting a letter within such extraordinary surroundings - adding a great sense of grandiose to things. Extraordinarily, during the Easter Rising of 1916, the GPO served as the headquarters of the uprising's leaders. The assault by the British forces extensively damaged the building and it was not repaired until the Irish Free State government took up the task some years later. Intriguingly, the original columns outside are still pocked with bullet-marks. They provide an everlasting reminder of the important historical events that took place here. The historical significance of the GPO and the way the building has remained a symbol of Irish nationalism and Irish national history never fails to utterly enthrall me. read more

I'm with James, An Post (our national postal service) can be pretty hit or miss at the best of times. But... today when I was wondering what to get a friend as a birthday present I remembered the All4One vouchers than An Post offer. The main idea is that you can get one voucher which can be used in loads of shops, restaurants, hotels etc around the country. Good plan. It makes a great present when you run out of ideas for people who have everything - let them decide! So I popped down to the post office today to pick one up. Easy peasy. The only down side is that there's a €2 charge on each voucher (ah, so that's how they make their money). Could do without that, but still it's a good idea. read more

The post office is open on Saturday - this was convenient - I took the time to buy stamps / mail some postcards. The staff is super friendly. i giving a review on the phone customer service, which was appalling! Not only did it take 15 minutes to get through, which i know is not an Post's fault, but when my call finally did get answered the fella who took my call was extremely rude and hung up on me before i was finished with my questions. the reason i called was to find out how long parcels/packages would be held at the depot as i was away from home for 10 days to look after my parents horses. he said 1 week for Irish and 3 weeks for international, and halfway through my second question (i asked for Dundalk's depot number) he simply hung up on me. There is so many reasons to visit the General Post Office- usually just called 'GPO'. The first reason, as others have already pointed out is the fact that it is the headquarters of An Post, the Irish postal service and the main post office in Dublin. There is also the historical significance of the GPO, which was used as a rebel stronghold during the 1916 Easter Rising. And thirdly there is the statue of Cuchulainn- the great Irish mythological hero- in the window of the GPO. A must- see for tourists. read more

This iconic building is one of the most famous in Dublin and represents Irish independence and freedom. The An Post (Ireland's postal service) headquarters are here in the General Post Office in Dublin, in the heart of O'Connell Street. This building has a ton of troubled history and if these walls could speak they would most certainly have great tales to tell. It has been host to many historic events for Dublin such as being the headquarters for the leaders of the Easter Rising (fight for Irish republicans with the aim to end British rule and establish the Republic of Ireland), to being the braodcasting studio of Radio Eireann, as well as being damaged by the British forces with bullet holes still intact! Things to note include the bullet holes that are sprayed across the facade as well as the statue of Cú Chullain,a sort ancient Irish Chuck Norris, which is in the window to commorate the rising. This review is fir the GPO Museum located in the historic post office. We might have enjoyed a historic your of the building and we're readying to happily pay 10 Euros to do so. But that interest was quashed by an extremely rude member of the museum staff. My partner placed our bags down beside is (two small backpacks) so that we could take a few moments to read the museum's Yelp reviews and see what we should look for in terms of highlights. My partner has a bad back, so he slipped over to a corner to sit and read them. No sooner had his bum touched down when the rude staff man came flying over to let us know we were not allowed to sit. His words: "This is a museum not a vagrancy; you can't just sit here." There was, literally, no one else in the area. Zero. Despite this, the watchdog museum staffer also refused to allow us to sit on a bench in the museum foyer -- unless we paid first. Mind you, we did no ask to.sit in the exhibit, but in the foyer where benches are located I assume fir sitting. We are here to spend our money and learn about Ireland. This staff person's rudeness and assumption of vagrancy was a poor reflection on the country and on this historic site. That kind of attitude is NOT worth a visit. read more

This is really a 5 * service. I registered a parcel posted to Brussels. The delivery attempt failed. I contacted An Post, who followed up to get the post office at which the package was stored, and the addressee was linked to the parcel in jig time!!!! I received an email about my delivery today.The delivery was on the way.i live in an apartment block where the delivery worker would need to ring the bell from the front door so i could come down to sign for it.i received no call to the door or no phonecall.i then received an email to say an attempted delivery had been made.i checked my postbox straight away and no slip was there to suggest delivery was attempted.i rang customer service and was informed that a slip should have been left.The lady in customer service did her best to get a delivery the following day but could not process the request due to a fault in the system.i am in work tomorrow and can not pick up the package.This scenario has happened before.i feel that there is always issues with an post delivery packages to my apt block in the city centre.The last time a backdated delivery slip was placed in the box the following day.someone is letting the service down.As a customer i pay for delivery and then have to get a bus to the depot when an post decide not to deliver it.its a disgrace.if i was a company i would steer clear of their unreliable service. read more

I live in rural Ireland so most of my shopping is online, whenever I have deliveries from couriers te boxes look as if Somone has played football with the stuff they often come at bizzare hours of te day and night and if it's Vegatables I've ordered it seems as if they have sweltered in a hot van for hours. An post is infinitely better, they usually arrive at the same hour late morning, the boxes are pristine, they never get misdirected and if I'm not in I can pick them up at the office later. The contents of Vegatables are always fresh in comparison never damaged, and always slightly cool. I don't know if they have a special fridge to keep things in or if their warehouses are just kept at a temperature that considers the spoiling of goods. Whatever they are doing they are doing the best service in the country and with the new parcel service you can do everything you can do with parcel motel with an post. It would be a huge loss to the country to see them close and have to rely on companies that do not seem to care at all. Also if you send packages with an post as a bussiness they are happy to repay you for any lost goods whereas other companies are a total pain to deal with when it comes to refunding.
