Watch your head, unless you're as short as I am. We were on the CIE Scots Irish tour. We somehow got a table directly next to the band and had a wonderful time, let folks come and sit with us, got Guinness with Blackcurrant (which depending on who you ask is WRONG ... I thought it was fun). We had a BBQ buffet dinner that was good with plenty of food. They let us take home our placemats which are maps of Ireland. Also, there was a gift shop with some lovely items that came home with us, as well.

This pub has been standing since the 17th Century, they know a thing or two about hospitality. Our party of five made ourselves cozy in the sessions corner as the pub keeper offered to light a peat moss fire for our comfort. They sell tee-shirts and tourist patronize this place, on account of it being a very old, beautiful Irish pub, but there were a few locals enjoying a pint when we stopped in. One of the owners is American, and I was surprised to see JFK Memorabilia in the smaller room. They have antique oil lamps, old firearms and assorted things on display for patrons to muse. They proudly serve Bushmills and even their own brand of Crosskeys Whisky, but I got a gin and tonic and enjoyed the Northern Irish craic that was on full supply on this June day.

My stomach is rebelling at the fried, cheesy, potato and bread overload from pub style food. When we reached Castelderg, all we could see were takeaway places that didn't even have a chair to sit on, forget a table. We weren't sure how our B&B would feel about us bringing a takeaway to eat in their dining room (I can't abide the smell of food in the bedroom). Then we suddenly saw this sit down place. We weren't even sure from the lighting if it was open. But we parked and they said they were serving dinner. The menu looked standard, but we were just grateful for a quiet place to sit down and eat. What followed has to be the biggest surprise of this trip foodwise. Red Pepper restaurant served us Michelin quality food, that people would queue up for hours in London! We started with a duck liver pate and a vegetable soup. I ordered a grilled chicken main and we had creme brûlée and vanilla pannacotta for dessert. He asked for a large whisky with hot water, they recommended adding cloves and lemon (free Irish warming cocktail upgrade alert) The bill for all of this was 29£ Yes Twenty Nine Pounds only. The quality, the presentation and the fantastically friendly service! Colin & Marie are doing everything right!

The mussels were locally harvested so the6 were really fresh. A great deal! My wife had a vegan curry rice dish which was excellent as well. Setting: Very nice, spacious with bare stone walls and tea lights everywhere which was very cosy! We had intended only to have a starter or light snack but the bar was full (buzzing) and no available seating for our party of 4 so we tried the restaurant-It was a Sunday evening and we had the whole place to ourselves- I love it when this happens, it makes me feel like a celebrity! :) Food: Very difficult to please all four of us as we have such different tastes but this restaurant was fabulous. Lovely range of foods and extensive wine list catering for a wide variety of tastes- all well priced. (Two courses for 25€ ; three courses 29€) My main was salmon and hake - well cooked and flavorsome, sides came included (veg, potato and chips) Staff: Waiting staff were helpful but not intrusive. I'd have liked more help / recommendation with the wine choice.
