The Silver Sands of Morar - View looking across the estuary of the River Morar

But the lack of tourist hordes is to the benefit of those who wish to walk and enjoy the breathtaking scenery, rather than roast on a beach all day. One of the best known and beautiful areas is around the village of Morar, just south of the ferry-port of Mallaig. The route - either by train or road - south from Mallaig to Arisaig along the coast is enchanting, as bays, lined with dunes and trees come into and out of view between rocky headlands. The sands around Morar are known for their lovely silvery-white colour, hence the name. Inland, the deep (very deep, in fact - at 328m, or 1,077ft, the deepest in the UK) waters of Loch Morar provide fabulous lakeside and mountain scenery. Morar is also held by legend to hold its own monster, cousin to that in Loch Ness. A road provides superb access to the Loch's north shore.

The best thing about this area to me was the lack of people and especially tourists thou I am one myself. This area is really worth a visit and you can either drive or get a steam train to Mallaig from Fort William what out of interest takes you over the multi arched bridge what was in the Harry potter movie. We wanted to go by steam train to Mallaig but as we didn't book the day before we had to drive what was the point of this review as because we drove we had the opportunity to stop at the silver sands. We practically had the full area to ourselves and it was all breathtaking. Ideal just to sit on the beach, light the BBQ and chill out whist the kids and dogs run them selves out of steam. It is a gorgeous place with no shops and nothing really in the area else to do so it is just ideal if you fancy getting away from the crowds and tourists and chilling out. The drive to the area is also pleasurable but don't forget to take the coast route when you see the sign.

Camusdarach is campsite heaven. It really can't get any better than this…read more It's in between Mallaig and Arisaig, and is backed by beautiful sand dunes and beaches, with plenty of rocks to scramble over, and lovely views. On arrival, we couldn't have been given a warmer welcome by our very genial host, who greeted us like long-lost friends, and we were made to feel at home. We were given a map, which was actually very useful given the size of this spacious site. We then had a look round the facilities. Oh my - luxury, proper luxury! The washing and shower block is something else - decorated to a higher spec than a lot of hotels. It's all grey slate and fancy taps. The shower heads are the large rainforest ones (or whatever they're called), and the shower was a good temperature. The site has every facility that you might need - flat pitches for motor homes, chemical toilet disposal point, grey water disposal point, electric hook ups, laundry, recycling points, free wi-fi, and other facilities such as a shop and cafe. They will even re-freeze freezer blocks for you, or re-charge phones or batteries for you if you aren't on electric hook up. We also noticed that they had a 'glamping pod', and that they take a very environmental approach to their facilities, with eco-friendly and sustainability being a high priority. But the best thing was the chemical toilet disposal point. I'm being serious, it was fantastic. Now this is the part of motor-homing that no-one enjoys. But what they have done here is turned it into a quirky and fun feature. The disposal point is located in an old fashioned style outside toilet cabin. Inside, there is a gigantic stainless steel toilet pan (sparkling clean) for your waste, and they have continued the theme with a ceramic cistern and old fashioned pull chain. They have even kept their touch of luxury going with a slate tiled floor. In having the consideration and creativity to create this eccentric little feature, what they have managed to do is make the most hated job actually good fun. It's a touch of brilliance in what is already a very classy campsite.

The Black Cuillin Hills loom ominously and magnificently on one side, Glenbrittle beach lies directly ahead of the campsite and to the rear are wildlife-filled pine forests and the famous Fairy Pools. At only £5pp a night, with access to toilets, showers, the site shop, water sources, and a spacious field filled with cheeky rabbits during the night, Glenbrittle was a wonderful place to be. The location of the site is the key to its success, but also its only downfall. Being at the end of a valley means Glenbrittle stands in the centre of a huge wind tunnel, and when the gales pick up, so does your tent! Ours survived one night in 40mph gales but might not have lasted much longer. Some others didn't fair so well... An energetic 2/3hr walk will take you half way up to the Sgurr Alasdair (The Cuillin's highest point at 992m), and to its mysterious little Lochan and waterfall. A short drive away you will find Skye's tasty Taslisker Distillery and the little town of Portree. I would recommend this site to anybody!

Meant to be, Glenbrittle and me! The Isle of Skye is gorgeous, so the campsite already has the surrounding beauty going for it. Otherwise, though, here are the key components that speak to me: - hot showers - fantastic coffee (a barrista on-site who makes delectable flat whites? Nothing says "camping is ok" after a chilly windy night than AM flat whites to warm the body and soul) - BREAD BAKED TO ORDER! BREAD BAKED TO ORDER YOU GUYS! Take that flat white, and level up with a loaf of seeded sunflower bread and a 1/4 lb. of butter. Sit by Glenbrittle beach and revel in how amazing caffeine, hot carbs and salted fat can be in combination. Yelp note: no phone service or wifi, which might cause immediate anxiety but - trust - is relaxing as soon as you settle into it.

The night we were there, we went a walk along the beach as the daylight was fading, and were taken aback at how beautiful the scenery was, and the colours of the landscape and sky. We were even lucky enough to be accompanied by a seal bobbing along, keeping an eye on us. We were able to park our motor home right at the top of the sand dune, so had an outstanding view last thing at night and first thing in the morning. The site facilities are basic. There is an unheated wash block with 2 toilet cubicles, 2 sinks, and 2 showers, but one of the showers doesn't work. Showers are £1 for 8 minutes, so if you have long hair like I have, you'd better be quick! There are no hairdryers but there are plug sockets on the outside, at the entrance to the toilets, which you can plug a hairdryer into. There is a big dish-washing sink, chemical toilet waste disposal point, and very good recycling points. There is no grey water disposal point. There are no electrical hook ups for motor homes. But really, although it is fairly basic, apart from electrical hook up points (which you don't really need anyway), this site has everything you need, and the views were the best we saw from any campsite. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
