I have come through this station many times to visit the area. I used to go to New Paltz and this was the main connecting point. You take the Metro North all the way to the last stop. There is a large seating area and vending machines for purchases. During the day there are many people going in and out of this location. During the fall it is much busier. Everyone wants to go over the bridge and see the fall panoramic views. There is a bus stop outside with people waiting to go to local stops. There are free buses which go to Poughkeepsie, Marist, New Paltz, and other locations. The free buses only come a couple times per day so make sure to time everything accordingly. At night the station is mostly empty. There are several homeless people who stay outside. After nine the seating area is closed so you have to wait outside. The trains do run until 1 am. If you miss out on the last train you have to wait until the morning for your next trip. I would have liked longer hours here but it is what it is. I will continue stopping by here when I visit Poughkeepsie. read more

I was traveling on Metro North to the Poughkeepsie station today from Grand Central Station, New York City. This station is also a major hub for Amtrak. That's why I'm reviewing it today. I was appalled to see the elevator out of order at an Amtrak hub. How does that make sense when you know many people traveling on Amtrak are burdened with luggage. Add that to the fact that we just had a blizzard and navigating by foot is difficult enough The station platform was well salted, but there was nobody in sight to help the elderly with their bags. I was struggling myself with two suitcases and shopping bags from my visit to New York City. The only way from the platform to the station is up a flight of approximately 30 steps nearly straight up. Once to the top, you have to balance your suitcases so that you can pull the doors open by hand. It's regrettable that this station could be so spectacular. It was built at the turn of the 20th century I believe and could be a masterpiece. Instead, it looks like a didn't she, grungy throwback to the 70s. No place to buy a cup of coffee, no employees in sight, police are stationed outside, but there's nothing there but sad tired people This is really a shame because I love Amtrak and Amtrak should really raise their voice about how passengers are being treated at this station. It's appalling. No photographs because I was juggling so much luggage. I couldn't even get my phone out. read more

This station is so beautiful. There is an interior area to protect you rom the elements with proper signage to help guide you. While I was there there was a security presence. Parking is accommodating. The lot was a little busy, and full but if you leave time to navigate that you should have no problem. It was an easy way to get in and out of NYC. The bathrooms were not to bad either. As always be aware of your surroundings. read more

Been coming here for many years, and a lot has improved, especially with the renovation that took place several years back. That definitely made things go along smoother since then, and it's great to see. A lot of work has been put into it which has paid off big time. Parking is a killer especially when arriving, as it may take time to find a parking spot while also, there isn't a lot of space to move around. Improving it will help move traffic along and save stress for sure. Plus, adding some additional spaces that have longer waiting times above 30 would be nice, for example, waiting for travelers to come, or taking care of an important business for a brief time, etc. With that, the wintertime can be a nightmare, as we experienced a couple of times. Take caution when walking to the building and leaving. They do a pretty good job maintaining the salt, etc. Overall, a decent maintained train station at Poughkeepsie. read more

Pre-pandemic I was visiting this station 2-4 times per years as it is my preferred way to get into NYP, always as an Amtrak customer. The drive from Rochester to Poughkeepsie is about 4.5 hours and the train ride in to Penn station is about an hour and a half, making it an easy and time efficient way to avoid having to deal with a car, parking, or driving in the city. I always purchase round trip tickets ahead of time and time my drive so I have about 15 minutes of buffer to hang at the station/grab water/use the facilities/etc. PARKING: free on weekends and available in the garage, surface lot, and streets surrounding the stations. I've parked my car in all of these spots with no issues for varying amount of time. I've seen a lot of complaints about the "area" but I find no issue with where the station is located. If you are arriving to this station on a Friday you NEED to leave extra time to park. Everything fills up quickly on the weekends and you may have a bit of a walk ahead of you. STATION: Yeah it isn't great. Uncomfortable wooden benches, BAD vibes in the bathrooms, cranky atmosphere, and sad sad snack area. Finding your rail is very easy, though, and the boarding process fairly simplistic. I haven't been during the pandemic and don't know how they're handling that. Face coverings are still required in transit in NY as of today. This is an excellent way to travel into the city from upstate if you're looking for ease and affordability. $55 round trip with trains coming and going from NYP every hour. Happy riding! read more

Took the train from here to New York Penn on Amtrak. Station felt safe enough and it was easy to tell which platform we were boarding on. Amtraks Quick-Trak machines are also super easy to use to print tickets. Ride was fast, smooth, scenic, and comfortable. Train was full though so couldn't sit next to my traveling partner. read more

I took AMTRAK from Poughkeepsie NY to Albany/Rensselaer. I found both train stations and their restrooms were immaculate, as well as the train platforms and the interior of the trains. As a Low Vision passenger, I had uploaded my train ticket on my cell phone, but on the return trip, I checked it too much and it closed (to prevent people from stealing the ticket, I think. So, lesson learned, if you get the ticket in your cell phone, don't check it too much. The conductor coming and going stopped me from a bad fall, as I thought the gap was a paint job on the bottom of the train. Outstanding customer service on the telephone and at the train station! Compared to other train stations on the MTA hudson like this isn't bad. The inside is always clean and warm, the staff is always friendly and helpful. I like that they also have the quick machines to buy your train tickets and your metro card if you'll be going all the way into the city. I haven't taken Amtrak from here but I hear good things. Overall I've never scene or heard of much crime happening here but there is always a police officer or two that rove around the parking garage or station, even area, which is nice to see. I only thing i would change is cameras in the garage and the ability to preset parking meter to start at 830. read more

The recent face-lift the Poughkeepsie train station did a lot to improve it. The inside is nice, thought the benches are still uncomfortable. The ticket windows are open something like 15 hours each day, with plenty of ticket machines as well. The bathrooms, especially the men's room, are a thousand percent better. There's still some basic things that would take a fortune to improve. One is the parking. You can only do so much with the space you have compared to the people using it. Fortunately, parking is free on weekends, and long-term parking is reasonable. I only wish they had additional 30-minute parking spaces near the entrance, because I like to stop in and buy my weekend tickets in advance to avoid long lines. It would also be nice if there were more food options, but if you have the time to spare to get food and/or drink, there are several good establishments on the other side of the parking lot (river side). read more

When I was a kid, in the 70s, I used to wait for my dad at this station. Mom would drop me at the station in Tarrytown. Sometimes I'd be with my older sister (12), and sometimes I'd be alone (9). We'd have to get a connecting train in Croton Harmon, which is where the electric trains to to diesel. Sometimes, there would be no train for hours. The Poughkeepsie station was a total shith*le back then. There were passed out bums under newspapers, and sketchy people hanging around. The luncheonette was closed. You could see the ancient equipment falling apart behind the locked gate. Sometimes you'd see rats back there. I always wondered what it looked like in the 50s. Back then, people weren't total losers. Kids were allowed to negotiate the world. They were able to see it as it was. It gave them guts and personality. I feel sorry for these kids. They're all soft and boring. Anyway, this station has been restored by gentrification $$. The luncheonette (snack bar for all you stupid boring kids), is running. There are probably no more rats. I guess this is progress. read more

This review is for Amtrak. I had booked a ticket from POU-HUD using my rewards points. My grandfather passed away and I needed to change or cancel the reservation. When I went on to the app to do so, it wasn't working. Then I went onto the regular computer site, same thing, kept getting an error message. I wrote Amtrak 2 emails explaining the situation with no response. I went into the station, and those employees are Metro North, not Amtrak, so they said we can't help you. Went onto quick track kiosk, and same thing. Finally I called Amtrak and was hung up on. Then I called again and was told that I needed to speak with Guest Rewards. Next time I'll just plan on driving. Amtrak sucks and they should go out of business. At no point did any of the employees I encounter even bother to offer condolences for our loss. read more

Absolutely disgusting trains. $19.00 one way to ride is RUN DOWN , DECREPIT , FILTHY trains. The bathrooms are FILTHY, the trains are FILTHY!! Water doesn't run in the bathrooms, soap dispensers don't work. Took the 7:12pm from GCT to Poughkeepsie and had to transfer at Garrison because the train broke down. Was told there was "Nothing" they could do or tell me when I complained to MTA head quarters. read more

I really love the fact that the powers that be have spent lots of money trying to develop the immediate area. There are great places to eat and drink before getting on the train to the city or after getting off the train. Free parking on the weekends but not a fan of the parking fare on weekdays ($3.50 for 16 hours/$6 for 24 hrs.....um random number). However on a weekday after 7am, good luck trying to find a spot since there all taken by the commuters. Beware of parking on the weekends though. A bar frequented by drunk upstaters is right by the non-garaged parking. You should definitely park in the garage or beware of drunk kids scratching up your car or worse. Same goes for college kids pregaming from PK down to the city. Beware of the hot mess on the train ride down. Overall happy with Metro North, as they're always on time. read more

I visited the Poughkeepsie Station as an Amtrak customer in transit from Beacon to Cleveland. Upon arriving at the station on the MTA, I was initially confused as to what track I could expect my train to arrive on. I wandered around the station for a bit until I arrived into the main waiting area. Now, I will say it was a HOT July day... about 94 outside... so it was stuffy and oppressive inside this GORGEOUS station. The interior is vast and beautiful. It really brings you back to the romantic past of train travel. I quickly learned what track my train was supposed to be arriving on from the Amtrak window and the monitors in the building were soon updated. During our hour and a half, our train was moved 3 times... which was annoying... however, they did a really good job of announcing it loud and clear, as well as updating the signs on the tracks to reflect the change. I had a really good experience at the station and wouldn't mind venturing through it again... except maybe on a slightly cooler day. read more

This station has a beautiful restored interior and exterior due to renovations that have occurred over the last decade along with the overall gentrification of the nearby neighborhood. The station is clean and will keep you shielded from the elements and has plenty of seating before you head down to the tracks to catch your Metro North or Amtrak train. The boards posted in and around the station show time and track updates and the announcements are clear. Parking can be abysmal (and it is on weekdays) so getting dropped off / picked up is the way to go. Enjoy your trip to New York or Montreal! read more

The station itself was nice, but the area it was located in was my problem. I don't understand why all of these Amtrak stations are in the most dangerous or most deserted areas. 2 blocks and there is the local prison and the court house. Come on people. If people are visiting, they don't want to see any of that dangerous stuffs. Thank god I am smart enough not to wander back into this area with my mother. We take the Amtrak to Rhinecliff and only stop here and pass through. read more

One star for the cheat who runs the snack bar inside the Metro North Station. I was rushing to make a train and asked for a bottle of water. I only had a $20 and wondered if he would give me a hard time but thought 'hey it's cash' so gave it to him. He gives me back $8.25. I said how much is the water? He said 1.75 and I said I gave you a $20. He said 'no you didn't that's why I keep the bill on top of the counter', reaches where I can't see and pulls out a $10. I said 'you're kidding, right'. He shook his head. I had to make my train so just ran. He probably does that quite often to people who are in a rush. Hope you enjoyed your ill-gotten gains, fella. Not as much a review for the train station, but the train to NYC from here has A LOT of people sneaking alcohol onto the train, actually not even sneaking, people drinking quite openly. It's not hot chocolate you're drinking out of that brown paper bag is it. Apart from that, the ride back to NYC is quite scenic. read more

What was a nice station is now a homeless shelter. I step over or walk past 6-10 homeless people sleeping in the side exit corridor. It's smells of soap and b.o. I hope this can be resolved soon. read more

The station is fine even if the design is a bit confusing and there are not enough elevators. Beware of the cab drivers. We were totally ripped off when we took a cab to the Culinary Institute. Charged us $20 and when we used a reputable cab company on the way back we were charged $8.50. I almost wanted to yell at the driver when we got back to the train station...since I saw him standing there. read more
