This is a nice station train stop. Clean, roomy, all the amenities. I rarely board or disembark here but every now and then I find myself here. Not real convenient to I-5 but I guess that's where the rail line is so.... There is a city bus stop here with two buses that will take you downtown (for free!). They run every half hour or so which is very convenient. Amtrak, like most USA rail systems, rarely runs on time so if you're headed to Seattle or Portland allow plenty of time for delays. Doesn't take much to throw these trains seriously off schedule. read more

Volunteers are friendly. The station is clean and well kept. The recorded message on the intercom reflected the wrong info and so the volunteer at the ticket counter had to remind us that the info was wrong. read more

It's small but charming. A comfortable place to sit with amenities like restrooms, vending machines, a lending library, scales for your bags, puzzles and magazines so you won't be bored. This nice little train station is very well maintained and a comfortable place to wait for your train. It is entirely staffed by volunteers, so you cannot buy a ticket or anything like that here. However, I found the volunteers to be very knowledgeable and more than glad to help. Also, many of the local bus lines stop right outside the depot. The time I was there the volunteers and the bus driver were more than glad to help me figure out how to get to my hotel. The local buses here are totally free, which is a real nice plus. read more

This train station is in a great location with lots of parking to leave your car behind for a few days. The buses also drive up to this location. Inside they have volunteers that run the inside and help guide you in using the quik-track to purchase last minute tickets. Inside they have bathrooms available, vending machines, and a coffee vending machine. My husband and I purchased our tickets online and used the quik-track to print out e-tickets last minute and had no troubles boarding the train 20 minutes prior to departure. read more

Amtrak has been by far the most unreliable transportation service I have used. I use it pretty often, maybe once a week, and not one trip has yet to come on time. And this time was the worst on January 23rd. We've been stuck on the tracks for 2 hours, their computer systems blow up and the whole train has to be tugged from where we departed. Now it'll be 5 hours to my destination instead of 2 since I have to wait for the next train. I am beyond upset, and the staff was lovely, but Amtrak needs to get their shit together! Please please update those trains and get rid of the damn cascade old rickety ones!! Without fail Amtrak is always late. read more

There is no sign at the entrance to this Amtrak station, so unless you have been here before, you may miss the entrance. The train was late getting to the station, and barely stops to allow people time to board. The train took off before the people who had just boarded could safely walk to their seats. I saw a poor older woman fall over on two of the seated passengers because the train lurched forward with no warning. As we were waiting at the station, one of the Amtrak employees decides to come over to my almost 70 year old mother to tell her that her bag is very large and has she checked the size. She explained that this was her return trip to California, and that no one had said anything on her trip up. The overzealous employee then walked over to the poster and read loudly the size maximums, and then he came back over and asked her if her bag was longer than 29 inches. Clearly we don't have any rules or measuring tape because we are at AMTRAK. We asked him if he had any measuring tape, and of course he doesn't. We then stared blankly at him until he finally went on his way to harass some other passengers. This is why I prefer to fly places. I might get hassled by a gate attendant, but then it's only 2 hours to my destination and not 30 hours. read more

This station is well run and has plenty of parking. I have left my car here for a week while traveling and it was here in same condition on my return! That's always a good thing. It is staffed by friendly volunteers that assist in boarding and answer questions but you need to purchase tickets online or with credit debit at their machine. It is easy to find off of yelm highway. read more

My encounters with the staff on visits I made here on arriving and leaving were just terrific. The station is run by volunteers, and they do a terrific job. The station is kept well, and they're knowledgeable. On arriving, I figured I'd take a cab into Downtown Olympia, but the fellow at the counter said, take the bus which was just outside. He looked up the schedule for me and told me it'd be far cheaper than a taxi; and what a great way to see Olympia and Lacey. read more

This station like ours in Salem has been remodeled and is kept in the best shape possible; the bathrooms are in good condition and there are plenty of papers/magazines/tourist info available if you're interested in doing something in Oregon-Washington esp along the I-5 corridor. The people are really friendly and they even have the Super Bowl on the tv when I've travelled through here at the first of Feb every year. The snack/pop machines are well stocked, too, and we've stayed in a nearby hotel and taxi service or bus service to Olympia is easily accessible. Since a few of my best friends live in Lacey area I stop here often esp on my way to Mariners/Seahawks games/Tacoma Dome concerts,too.. Keep up the great work and I enjoy the historical info about the area, too. PS I do drive up here, too,but with some recent medical problems the past 5 years it is so much easier to take the train and bypass the freeway hassle, plus the food is great on the trains: Hebrew hotdogs, Ivar's chowder, good sandwiches, salads, and even bloody Mary's are great, although I usually get a pop. People are always friendly on the train.Thanks. PSS People are always saying the trains are late, the latest I've came through here in the past 10 years was 40 minutes late and that was due to two Union Pacific spills on the tracks on the same day...very unusual.. read more

This is a real comfortable place. I think it was real professional. It was my first time riding the Coast Starlight. No 2nd or 3rd time. The Coast Starlight is a passenger train operated by Amtrak on the West Coast of the United States. It runs from Seattle, Washington to Los Angeles, California via the San Francisco Bay Area. The train was the first to offer direct service between the two cities. Its name is a combination of two Southern Pacific Railroad trains, the Coast Daylight and the Starlight. The train has operated continuously since Amtrak's formation in 1971. Unique among Amtrak's long-distance trains, the train features a Hi-Level lounge for sleeping car passengers named the "Pacific Parlour Car." History Background Before the formation of Amtrak, no one passenger train ran the length of the West Coast. The closest equivalent was SP's West Coast, which ran via the San Joaquin Valley from Los Angeles to Portland, with through cars to Seattle via the Great Northern Railway.[2] The SP had the Coast Daylight between Los Angeles and San Francisco and the Cascade between Oakland and Portland. The SP also ran overnight trains between Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay area - the all-sleeping car Lark on the coast route and the mixed coach and Pullman Owl on the San Joaquin Valley line. Service from Portland north to Seattle was provided by the Union Pacific, Northern Pacific Railway or Great Northern Railway. In 1970 the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific were merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad, which continued to provide service. Trains south from Los Angeles to San Diego were the Santa Fe's San Diegans. Operation With the start of Amtrak operations on May 1, 1971 a single train began running between Seattle and San Diego. The unnamed train ran three days a week; on the other four days (northbound Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday; southbound Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) another unnamed train ran between Oakland and Los Angeles (initially 98 northbound and 99 southbound). On November 14 Amtrak officially dubbed this dual operation as Coast Daylight-Starlight and extended the former Coast Daylight '​s southern terminus from Los Angeles to San Diego. The Los Angeles-San Diego through-running ended with the June 11, 1972 timetable change, replaced by a third San Diegan.[3] In June 1973 Amtrak began running the combined Coast Daylight-Starlight daily. Positive response led to Amtrak to retain this service, and the Coast Daylight name was dropped on May 19, 1974.[4] With the November 10, 1996 timetable change Amtrak added through coaches between Seattle and San Diego attached to the last Amtrak San Diegan train of the evening (#511).[5] They were coupled onto the first morning train back to Los Angeles where they were re-coupled to the Coast Starlight to Seattle.[6] This was discontinued with the October 26, 1997 timetable change because of train 11's poor timekeeping. Instead, if train 11 arrives at Los Angeles prior to the final Surfliner departure, through passengers to Orange County and San Diego will take the connecting Surfliner train, otherwise passengers will ride a bus (the motor coach option occurs more often than the train). Ridership declined by 26% between 1999-2005 as freight congestion and track maintenance on the Union Pacific Railroad reduced the Coast Starlight '​s on-time performance to 2%, which Amtrak characterized as "dismal." By mid-summer in 2006 delays of 5-11 hours were common. Critics dubbed the train the Star-late.[7] During early summer 2008, the Coast Starlight was relaunched with new amenities and refurbished equipment. In July 2008, the Pacific Parlour cars had been refurbished and were back in service as part of the relaunch. This was much anticipated, due to the success of Amtrak's "re-launches" of the Empire Builder. Between FY2008 and FY2009, ridership on the Coast Starlight jumped 15% from 353,657 passengers to 406,398 passengers.[citation needed] Operating conditions on the UP improved as well; by May 2008 on-time performance had jumped to 86%. read more

This is a completely volunteer run station. Older retirees assist passengers; updating with train status & arrival time, using the self ticketing kiosk, providing kids with crayons and train centric coloring projects, arranging for a taxi for those that might become stranded and they will keep the station open until the last train of the night - even if it means a few unexpected hours - which is nice on its own but pArticularly great during chilly wet winter evenings read more

Buy your tickets online, there is a machine, but you have to have a reservation made first, you can't purchase them there. I boarded the lower level of a car which was the last car on the Coast Starlight train number 11 bound for Los Angeles. A fight broke out between an irate and rude woman and an overweight man when he bent over in the aisle and apparently his posterior got too close to her face for her comfort. She was asked by the attendant to stop using her cell phone in the car (rules say you must step out of the car to use your cell, she spent almost the entire trip talking on the phone), and to move her belongings from the seat beside her. She was trying to prevent others from sitting beside her and the train was full. I thought a race riot would break out when the overweight man called her "colored" and the woman mentioned that white folks got preferential treatment. The conductor actually left her post to talk to them but nothing actually happened, and nobody was moved. People seemed to calm down after that. I've had other experiences on the same line that were just as interesting. We were once held at the Portland station for almost 3 hours because of engine failure with no air conditioning, water, or lights, but nobody, including the conductor said a word about what was going on. After all that time, they gave us a packet with cheese and crackers and a couple of cookies and a six ounce bottle of water. When I got to the Olympia/Lacy station it was pitch black out and this is in the middle of nowhere. My ride didn't know when to pick me up and I had no idea when I would get there, so I had to call when I got there. It was ridiculous you walk up to a car, choose carefully, don't go to the back, they tell you exactly where to sit based on where you are getting off. Look around and be careful who you set next to. Stay clear of kids, and people who look nervous, and talkative. The type that likes to stay up all night, visiting the bathroom, having long empty conversations, and generally annoying you throughout your journey. read more

This is one of the cutest train stations I have ever been in. It is run entirely by volunteers who absolutely love trains! They are so friendly and so into trains. There's a QuikTrak machine, and the vending machines have a coffee machine, so I'm currently enjoying a nice pumpkin spice. :) read more
