This one is awesome…read more It's an 1867 marble statue of a Civil War soldier being greeted by a young girl. The statue is near the front entrance of the CT Veterans' home in Rocky Hill. The veterans' home has an interesting history. It was first built in 1863 in Darien and named "Fitch's Home for Soldiers and Orphans". It's purpose was to take care of wounded Civil War soldiers and their orphans. The home became a state facility and grew in size to the point where it accommodated 1,000 soldiers soon after World War One. In 1940, the CT Veterans' home opened a new facility in Rocky Hill, where it exists today. One of the relocated vets was a 97-year gent named Edmund Kleespies - he was the Home's last living Civil War veteran. The Returned Soldier statue has been renovated and was moved to Rocky Hill in 1985. It's an incredible statue of what looks to me to be a dazed traumatized soldier, home from the war, being greeted by a child. Things haven't changed much over the years, have they?

This is one terrific memorial!…read more It's a large rock on a white stone base. Set into the rock is an ornate metal plaque with over 100 names of Cromwell citizens that served in World War One. There are sculpted panels showing scenes from the war - soldiers and sailors and a cavalryman on a horse. There is a large angel with her wings outstretched over the names- as though she is there to protect them. The center inscription reads: Erected in Honor of the World War Veterans By the Citizens of Cromwell 1925 On top of the rock is an attention grabbing sight - a fierce looking bronze statue of an eagle or a hawk perched on top of the distinctive World War One "Doughboy" helmet.

Town of Berlin, CT was incorporated in 1785 and has a population of approximately 20,000. It is…read morelocated in the center of Connecticut and it also has a train station; the train station serves the New Haven and Springfield line. It's a mix of residential and industrial. There is the Metacomet ridge to the west side. There is hiking at the Ragged Mountain Memorial Preserve. The term Yankee Peddler came from this town; peddlers would travel throughout and sell their tinware. Schools are good and there are many small businesses such as cafes and restaurants. My family and I enjoyed exploring the town.

But sometimes there's a little magic in opening a tangible, paper and ink book... especially one with beautiful pictures. Truly, there was something spiritually fulfilling about browsing the volumes of this tiny library, which does bring in its share of newer texts while preserving the writings of the past. Lesley Q. found a book on the town of Berlin, which had lots of photographs of the town's historical homes and buildings. I stumbled upon [in real life, not the goddamn website] a copy of Connecticut's public records from 1797-1799. Bet you didn't know that His Excellency Jonathan Trumbull Esquire was paid $500 every six months for his services as the Governor of Connecticut! There's a real life card catalog... remember those? Painstakingly thumbing through thousands of index cards to find sources for your four page written report on elephants before the internet was invented... man, life was rough back in fourth grade. The cheap linoleum floors. The souciant of slowly decaying paper in the air. The cheapest fluorescent lights that local government money can buy... yep, it's a library alright. Living just steps away from here, a regular visit is all but necessary.

Berlin library has a history that started in 1829. This particular library opened in 1989. It's…read morelocated in a lovely campus across the street from the town hall. There were plenty of parking and the library was spacious and had an open layout. When you first walk in, the children section is to the right. They had a large children section which was nicely decorated with fake trees and a variety of kids decor. They also had so many toys for the kids; from a toy train table, kitchen sets, cash register, dollhouse, and more. They had a wide array of books too. My family and I spent about an hour in there and loved it. It was pretty busy since it's a weekend and cold out; other families had the same plans as us. Overall, it's definitely a nice library. I didn't talk to the librarians so I can't comment on if they're nice or not.

As of late, this library has everything but the late fees. The children's department has an excellent scavenger hunt to find The staff are knowledgeable and friendly as you'd hope, and there are so many neat finds to grab as you walk by. There is a self-checkout, but when your library card finally curls beyond reading the staff are ready to help. This library always confirms how awesome a community resource can be.
