As in the photos, the station is nothing fancy, however it is clean, the staff is friendly country people and it has the basics. There is a small parking lot, a manned ticket window, a train arrival /departure screen, couple of vending machines, nice wall art, and they have a small waiting area. This station serves the local HBCU institution of Virginia State University. Also, it is a 10-15 minute car share ride to the Army Post Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly known as Fort Lee).

All in all, I will continue to use this station because it's close to my family, but I don't have high expectations and realize that I'm on my own when I come here. There's no security. No nothing. The station is located just blocks from the campus of William & Mary. Ample parking is provided and the lot was clean. The building is fitting for the area but seemed nondescript with small signage on the building. Mask are required inside regardless of vaccination status. Tickets can be purchased inside. The Men's restroom was functional and clean. I purchased my sons tickets online which was an easy to use system. Major credit cards are accepted. An email confirmation was generated immediately. The train arrived around 5 minutes late, not bad. My son rode coach for $27 from DC. Quite the bargain. He described the trip as comfortable and similar to a bus or plane with more leg room and better seating. The timing was approximately 3.5 which is slower than driving in perfect conditions which never occurs in NOVA. The return was less than 10 minutes late and quite crowded with some passengers traveling as far as Philly. My son will schedule to use them again some time in 2022. By the way, if your wondering if the conductor yells ALL ABOARD when arriving they do. Just like the movies.

Stopping in Fredericksburg VA final destination Newport News. The way she spoke to passengers and the lack of control with her voice was as if the passengers were boarding a train bound for hell. No seriously she was rude yelling "Last Name" "get on board". No eye contact. Prior to this I was considering using Amtrak to visit my son as it seemed so convenient. But nope, not after seeing how rude she was. Yea folks it takes just one person. As Apprehensive as I was her attitude sealed my decision. Second the train station was dirty, smelly (urine) it literally backed to a restaurant and while it looks like the city is working on the structural issues they need daily attention to the cleanliness of the facilities. I was surprised as to how many passengers came off the train at our stop. Trash was littered all over. Only one bench on the south bound side of the tracks. This is a historic town where locals pride themselves on their homes and historic buildings and this left me very upset as to how neglected the train station was. Train ride to DC was wonderful and so much better than driving…read more The Norfolk Amtrak station - not so good. We used the second train of the day to DC which departed at 8:59am. Nothing was open so, no way to get snacks beforehand and very little seating inside. It was my first time and I was shocked by the lack of parking, the gravel roads, no sidewalks or organized crosswalks, lack of parking and pull-off for cars doing drop-off and construction. The extremely small building and waiting area for the "station" was also a surprise. There is some serious work that needs to happen here... the station feels like an afterthought, with the smallest building and arrival/departure area I've ever seen at a station in a larger city like Norfolk. There is clearly some sidewalk work being done - but, having to drag your rolling bag through gravel and broken up streets past cars everywhere and people parked on the single sidewalk was not the best with a baby in a stroller and multiple rolling bags. Boarding was also a pain as they only opened two boarding doors for the entire train so hundreds of people and their bags and babies being loaded on was a huge traffic jam. I'm not sure why they do this... it made getting into the train a huge pain and long, long line. Not impressed with Norfolk Amtrak station area at all. Train was great. Station needs some work and infrastructure.

For a lot of people, this little train station to our small town is the first thing they'll see…read morewhen they stop by. My children love seeing the Amtrak trains roll by so we stop by to see them whenever we can and whenever the trains are actually on time (but that's a different story). I'll add I've never got on/off Amtrak from this location, but my brother frequents this station when he goes up to New York for work and he loves the convenience of the station. The folks at the station are really kind too. They've given my kids little train whistles in the past and it's always lovely to hear their interactions with travelers. I'll add that it's great that they built that overpass walkway where you can now park your cars on the other side for that much more convenience to accessing the train station. It was much needed!
