But before even beginning my casual home search, my friend referred me to Darlene, a mortgage specialist with The Mortgage Firm. Darlene and I spoke (I found her cheery, helpful and patient) and after I gave her my answers to her questions, she popped out a number and told me I could start looking for a home in that ballpark. And so when my search pinpointed the property I ended up going with, I called Darlene and she immediately whipped up a pre-qualification letter (essentially saying I'd be approved for this much mortgage-wise). In minutes, we shot that over to the seller's agent and were underway. I was a total n00b to the mortgage process, but Darlene made it absolutely seamless. I'd been regaled with sordid stories of a mortgage procedures from hell and what I experienced with Darlene was anything but. She hooked up the appraiser (who produced an appraisal that went through with flying colors - a near impossible feat), she linked me with an insurance company (a quick and painless process), and she ultimately got me closed in 30 days. Sheer amazingness. I know things were far more complicated on her side, but from where I was sitting, the mortgage process was a breeze. She told me what documents to furnish and once I did, everything was handled from her side and with her team. I'd highly recommend her to anyone looking to buy a home and I fully intend to employ Darlene's services should I ever be on the search again. A real sweetheart and a total professional who took the time to make sure I understood everything I was signing off on. Darlene's the best (and her responses to my emails nearly always came back within 10 minutes!).

But beware the sugar-sweet tone of their callers: Translation: Was their collateral impaired by Ian? Why do they want to know that? Well, once the house is damaged, their collateral is no longer worth what they loaned you on it. They can ask for more money from you perhaps, or perhaps call in the loan. Bad enough people lost their homes-- must TMF now make it worse by calling in their mortgages? If they want to know this, they should send out their investigators and underwriters, instead of further victimizing those who lost their homes. Shame on you The Mortgage Firm!
