Only problem was that my mom has severe acid reflux and cannot have anything spicy (Scoville kind of spicy). I made sure to email the restaurant months in advance and when we arrived, the person helping us remembered the email! He made sure to point out again what wasn't spicy and we were able to feed her well. This restaurant is small and intimate so you definitely need a reservation. It seems to be a great date place because it's dark and there is some cool mood lighting going on. You'll be sitting very close to whoever you're with as well. The food is something I've never experienced before and I actually can't wait to try more. The hoppers were interesting. It felt hard to pick up stuff with but I noticed a lot of people just spooning curry into it. I'll try that next time. The roti was all really good, including the gluten free one. We didn't take home leftovers but my mom made sure to take those with her. Drinks were very unique and refreshing. I loved the play on classic cocktails but made with Sri Lankan flair and ingredients. So why not 5 stars? Some things rubbed me the wrong way service wise. My drink was forgotten and it kind of felt like it was my fault (t wasn't) even though I did get an apology. Also, my mom is very much a rice person so we wanted rice with her cashew curry. But the person helping us was like no, you're getting the dhal and replaced it. Yes, the dahl was good but my mom would have liked the rice.

What is it about us of late! I would have to say every second restaurant we visit is Indian/Sri…read moreLankan and so it is with Sunil's..a lovely restaurant where the service is great and the staff very friendly, and happy to explain the dishes for the uninitiated... we made a point of trying to order dishes that we do not normally have ..ahh Bittara Boatu- a lovely entree of boiled egg cut in half and the centres filled with a tangy onion sambal placed on a piece of roti. sooo yummy also Pan Rolls- spicy, minced chicken rolled in a crepe, battered and crumbed (ok don't think about it being fried hit the gym tomorrow or walk the dog)) it is so nice. For mains we decided on Elu Mas- spiced goat in a rich onion and coconut sauce with a touch of ginger and chilli.. Thora Malu Mirisata- Spanish Mackeral curry with green chillies and tamarind..lovely..next Devilled Beef - sliced beef with onions, tomato, capsicum and spiced with crushed pepper...to accompany the usual cheese naan and garlic naan, sweet mango chutney, seeni sambol, Malay pickle.. and rice.. so on to desert.. oh dear and we did manage a lovely mango kulfi.. I suppose the only down side is that the restaurant is on Pennant Hills Road and as Sydney people will know this is a very very major road.. but you know other than the fact that we had to park around the corner, the road noise was not audible and an enjoyable time was had by all.. I promise to take photos next time before everybody dives in. Fully licenced and BYO wines only . They do also cater for parties and functions.

SLSF fortuitously was right across the street from my guesthouse and there was no chance I was going to pass up the opportunity to dine there. While I can't profess to any sort of super educated depth of experience with the cuisine of Sri Lanka, I did have the fortune of having a friend who was a great representative cook of his home cuisine and I knew it was more significantly varied than just a spin on Indian food. Heavy in coconut, seafood and spice, Sri Lankan food has to date been woefully underrepresented in most major cities. But not here in Sydney, where there seem to be several restaurants serving Sri Lankan food. Sri Lankan Street Food boasts of having a chef who cut his teeth in kitchens for various high end hotels and yachts. He owns a catering/restaurant based in Toongabbie, and SLSF represents their foray into the big city dining scene. They have been open one year already and business has been steady. It should be mobbed. The beef curry and hoppers (Sri Lankan crepes is the nearest I can describe them), one of which had a soft boiled egg, was extremely tasty. Not unspicy, yet not unpleasantly hot either. My fish main course, served wrapped in a banana leaf, was also on mark, and had some nice salads and yogurt to balance the taste. The menu spoke of a sour ingredient (apparently a weight loss technique in Sri Lanka, similar perhaps to when your older brother poured sour powder all over your dinner and you refused to eat it), but if it was there I didn't notice. The team is solicitous and friendly, as evidenced by the advice to "drive safe!" issued to each food service driver that came in. Note that they don't serve beer and wine, so you should come equipped with your alcoholic beverage of choice, if that is your preference. They do have a variety of non-alcoholic drinks and desserts, though I simply didn't have room.
