If your repair job goes smoothly, I imagine that Hometown Tech is a perfectly acceptable business…read more If there's any wrinkles or delays, good luck finding out about it until after you've spent 4 weeks waiting for your initial assessment. I was told 'at most 2-3 weeks, probably less' to get an assessment on repairing a laptop fan error. Narrow margin in the worst case, but I can deal with 3 weeks before getting my data back. One business day before the three weeks were up, I called to figure out what was happening- the only point of contact that I had was a new hire at the front desk, who could only tell me that my file was empty, but assured me that the assessment could have started, and that she'd direct the tech to call me. The tech never called. On Monday, I called at 2 PM. This was foolish, as the 10 AM to 6 PM hours on the google listing actually mean 'you can only reach people at 10 AM', so the automated voice messaging system told me to check the google listing for the business hours that they update daily. Tuesday, three weeks and a day in. I called at 10 AM, and was put in contact with the manager, who apologized for the delay. They'd had a family emergency and were gone for a week, and the 2-3 week backlog had gotten worse- fair enough. They told me my assessment was more difficult than expected, but she'd call the owner and primary tech in and the assessment would be done Thursday. Thursday, I hear nothing. Friday I call to pick up my laptop and cancel the job. I am fed up with the experience, with having to pull teeth to get any idea what's happening, and getting wrong information when I get information. I get an appointment for noon. Shortly before noon, I get a call from the owner who says they're putting it back together, hopefully in time for the appointment, and they expect the fan error to be fixed when they do. They don't have it finished, and it turns out the reason the assessment took so long was a key came off and part of the case snapped while they were disassembling the laptop, and they were trying to find a replacement. As accomodation and to mollify me they let me backstage and let me do some basic data recovery with their gear while the tech reassembled the laptop. +1 star I guess?? Unfortunately, once the laptop is reassembled the fan error is not fixed, and it's clear that it's not the kind of mechanical blockage that should be a quick cheap fix. At the end of the day my $50 assessment fee and four weeks of waiting got me 'unknown fan error that'll be too expensive to actually be worth fixing.' Worth the $50, but not worth the 4 weeks with no idea what is happening. Why is the business structured so the only point of contact clients have is unable to tell whether the assessment has started? Why does the manager being gone for a week mean a full extra week of delay? Why was I not called when it was clear they wouldn't make the estimate? Why was I not called when the breakage occurred? Why was I not called Thursday when it was clear they wouldn't make THAT estimate either? Why did I have to actively call at 10 AM every time to ever find anything out about the status of my case? It is partly my fault for accepting the initially stated delay, and it is partially faultless for the manager's troubles. Nonetheless, I fully regret coming here and will not be doing so again.

To summarize, I asked them to perform a lighting exchange from fluorescent to LED In my home shop. They came out within a few days, did a nice job of assessing the situation and providing me with the raw materials, then they did about half the job (the easy half), then flat-out refused (nicely) to come back and finish it. said they had manpower problems. They charged me the full $1500 amount and their invoice reported that the job was completed. I spent $1600 and a lot of personal effort to complete the job myself. After failing to get any dialogue from them, I plan to pay the invoice to avoid further hassle. The price they pay will be this review! The following is a letter I wrote two months ago to the company that has all the details of timing and sequence. I never received a reply. I certainly will never ask them to do anything else for me. I waited a long time to write this review because I just COULD NOT believe that a reputable company would behave in this manner: Dear Nelson Electric: Please help me understand. Early December 2022, I asked you to to revise the lighting system in my shop from Fluorescent to LED. 'Twas a natural choice, because you wired and lit my shop in 2008 and did a really sweet job. The circuit box is a work of art. You sent a senior electrician and apprentice out Dec 13 and we had a good day. He surveyed the situation, did some research, gave me good advice, and brought all the bulbs needed. The difficult part was five 8-foot fixtures on a high ceiling that needed ballasts removed and circuitry restored before placing the 8-ft LED bulbs. Your team didn't have the necessary ladders/scaffold to reach the 3 difficult (16-ft high) fixtures, so they did the easier 2 and left me with the impression they would be back. I never got a call-back, so after about 2 months, I put a call into your general office, and eventually 2 calls to "Buddy," job scheduler? I emphasize all interactions were cordial and I think admirably honest, except for one thing: I THINK IT WAS JUST A DIFFICULT, LOW-PAY JOB AND NOBODY WANTED TO FINISH IT! Buddy told me during the first call that he would try to get the completion scheduled, but a couple weeks later during my second call, he was honest enough to tell me that he was having significant manpower shortage problems and he didn't think the job would be completed within 6 to 9 months, and when I asked if it would be appropriate for me to prep the work place and hire a friend independently to complete the job, he welcomed that option. I understand that. I've done my fair share of difficult jobs. But I don't really have a grasp on how a company with your reputation could start a job and verbally contract to finish it, then just blow it off. I got a bill for services invoice (attached) on December 17. It is my personal compulsion, my mission in fact, to pay such bills in full immediately upon job completion. But it is also my cautious character to avoid paying for jobs that have not been finished. The services and advice (and of course materials) that you provided were valuable to me. I'm not trying to get out of paying for that. But it cost me considerable $'s to buy and build a scaffold and hire a friend to complete the work and I think maybe some downward adjustment of your bill is in order. The invoice implies the work was completed. Thank you very much for your consideration. I'm sorry this is so long, but I wanted to make sure you had all the details. Invoice attached. Sincerely, Mark Taylor

Cutting crew took down the easier tree out front and then left when they realized payment wasn't in cash, making excuses that the ground was too soft to drive the truck back to take the second tree that day. I paid 1/2 of the bid by credit that day and followed up for months with calls to arrange a time to remove the final tree. D&J made constant excuses about soft ground, then snow, and stalled for months, never coming to take second tree and honor the bid. Ultimately I went with a competitor (Pitts) from Ames in June of 2020 (Initially contacted D&J September 2019!). Communication between Owners, office staff (nice lady named 'Red'), and cutting crew was a mess. They did not have their act together at all. D&J bid $3,000 for the two trees together. One was easier and in front of house. The other was in back on property line, trunk within 15' of 2 garages and houses with large limbs spanning over all the buildings. Both trees were 30-40 foot Green Ashes about 50-55 years old, dying from Ash borer. In retrospect I should not have paid D&J half that day for taking down the easy tree. After multiple bids for the remaining, more difficult, tree it was objectively a $2,000 job. This means that D&J functionally duped me out of $500 by taking the easy tree and running, never to return. I consider that as good as theft, but likely have little legal recourse. To be fair the tree they did take down was done smoothly and cleanup was adequate. It is the lying, delays, and dishonesty of the interaction overall that leads me to warn other potential customers with this review. If you watch them like a hawk and document everything, never paying a cent until the job is complete I suppose they are minimally adequate as a tree service. This is why I gave 2 stars out of 5.
