I'm giving this a 3 because the employee who helped us in store was incredibly nice. Would give him a 5 but I'm beyond annoyed with the delivery issues. We were supposed to have appliances delivered today and were told they would call ahead to let us know they'd be here shortly. They were delivering 3 appliances for my house and 1 for my parents (they live up the street) and we gave them my phone number to call ahead. I double checked that was the number they would be calling before leaving the service counter after purchase. Well wouldn't you know today they supposedly made 3 attempts to deliver with no one home (I was one block up the street at my parents and able to return in under a minute as needed.) They called the wrong number (my dad's) and when he called back after missing their ONE call, they never answered and he couldn't leave a VM. Now delivery is going to have to be Saturday interrupting plans we've had all summer if we want them this week (we needed them ASAP.) read more

I have been trying for three days now to help a friend with a return of a washing machine. I am deeply disappointed with the inflexibility of the return policy and the brush-off that we received from customer service, both in person and online. She purchased a washing machine that does not serve her; she is almost 80 years old and has some physical challenges. The machine she purchased is one that she cannot use comfortably. All that we have been asking for is some consideration in returning for a different model. I have been told by Lowe's that my only option is to talk to Samsung, who tells me that my only option is to talk to Lowe's. $400 should not make a difference to either company. It hurts to know that Lowe's, who I have used for years for my contracting business, does not care for anyone over the age of maybe 30 or with physical challenges. The lack of consideration has been frankly appalling and does not reflect any empathy or care for individuals in situations such as this. Looking at market values today, Lowe's is at $268 billion and Samsung at $266 billion. The removal and replacement of a washer for someone unable to use it will not move the financial needle on those numbers, but perhaps caring for your customers would. read more

I ordered almost $2000 of ceramic tile on 1-25-24 at the Ames store. I was truly amazed at the customer service offered from both Bruce & Alec (store associates). They answered every question to the best of their ability and if they didn't know the answer, they knew how to find it. The variety of tile to choose from was overwhelming and no way would I have figured it out without their assistance. The only hitch in working with Lowes was trying to do a survey online to give both of these people credit for all of their help. Never delivered and dispatch told us to call the store to let the store know they are running behind. Next day still not delivered by 5 And they confirmed would be delivered. Lowe's is way on South Duff (past US 30) and in one of the newer parts of Ames that I don't regularly travel. I was down here to get a part to help fix something at my Parent's home. I'm actually not that handy, but it was the least I could do for my folks' hospitality. As with most big box stores, my visit started with disorientation, followed by exploration, and finally discovery. The people that work at Lowe's in Ames are extremely incompetent. I've never dealt with people that knew less about home improvement products in all of my life and certainly know even less about customer service. I am writing this on behalf of my father who doesn't have a Yelp account but asked me to do a review after having to deal with their incompetence. First off, he purchased a product that needed to be delivered to his home in Ames. After finally tracking down someone to sell him the product, they charged him an outlandish amount for delivery. He said it was in the neighborhood of $100 and he only lives six or seven blocks away. The item was a washer and dryer. They also charged him an additional $72 for installation, but this was worth the money. So, he purchases the washer and dryer and Lowe's tells him they will deliver the item on a certain date, supposedly August 22nd in the morning. He took the time off work and waited for the delivery, which they said would be done that morning, and never arrived. After calling back, they told him that the washer and dryer that they had sold him had apparently been purchased by someone else and that they'd have to wait for another two units to arrive before delivery. Basically, Lowe's sold the washer and dryer that he had already purchased out from under him, didn't tell him about it and then made him wait for a delivery that wasn't going to happen. No offers for apology at all and they even made it sound like it was his own fault. Incredible. So, a week later, the washer and dryer arrived at Lowe's and they called him for a delivery time. He again took time off work. The truck arrived and they unloaded the dryer. Much to my dad's chagrin there was no washer on the truck. They forgot to load it up, so they headed back to the store and came back later. Here's the kicker. The store charged him an additional $100 for delivery of the second item even though they were the people that messed it up in the first place. Unbelievable! These people have no idea how to treat customers and will take absolutely no fault for their mistakes. If this is any indication of how this company operates, I will no longer be using any of their stores. Poor customer service, terrible delivery and then billing the customer when the company screws up. Needless to say, he's not going to be paying for their mistake but they are going to be paying the price as a corporation. Keep treating your customers like crap, Lowe's... that's fine. I tried shopping here a couple of times once I started going to college. On my first visit it was awful. I don't know much about light bulbs so I tried asking the guy why once led bulb was so much more than the other since they were both the same 60w. It took me ages to get someone who knew what was going on and I finally got this laid back dude named Ben. He just kind of stood there and stared at the two boxes before giving up. Yesterday I went in to get some wire for my project and this guy who looked like syndrome from the incredibles came over. (Not even kidding) I thought it was going to be a waste but the dude knew everything about the electrical stuff and more!!!! Helped me out with ideas on how to insulate my project too. This Lowes location is a bit smaller than many, but it's still the best DIY home improvement option in Ames. I've found the need to go to Menard's and Home Depot in Ankeny on occasion. The staff is friendly, although not always as visible to offer help as employees at some competitors. Recently found a great deal on kitchen appliances here, but you need to watch for promotions with items such as appliances and carpet for Lowes' prices to be truly competitive. read more

We purchased a dishwasher three weeks ago at the store in Ames. We waited for almost an hour for someone to help us to purchase this dishwasher. They were very bit busy and very shorthanded. 3 days after I purchased the dishwasher I received a call telling me the dishwasher I purchased did not exist and therefore I needed to check and buy a different dishwasher. After finding a second dishwasher, I was told someone would call me back and let me know if it was available. I never heard anything two days later I get an email and text message from the man who is going to install it telling me the dishwasher was coming Yesterday. I was Elated! On the day of the install I was told the dishwasher was not in and lowes should have called me and canceled and they did not. I called Lowe's to try and talk to somebody about it was given the name of a person to talk to and that person did not call me back. I had to call back again and again the person did not call me back on the third attempt I actually spoke to the person and found out the dishwasher is at least 2 to 3 weeks out no explanation of why no one called me and no explanation of when the dishwasher didn't show up and the installer went to pick it up and it was not there and the installer said Lowes was supposed to call me and they never did so I moved my schedule around to make sure we were home for dishwasher installation. The installer didn't show I contacted him. He was extremely nice and said Lowe's was supposed to call me and they never did. This is so frustrating! I understand things can go wrong...but the not calling me is unacceptable! read more

Beware of buying appliances there! When something goes wrong they will be no help at all. I bought a Maytag washing machine 9 months ago and it can no longer make it through any wash cycle. I stopped by to see what to do and was told I should have bought a protection plan. However no protection plan was ever offered to me when I bought the machine. They gave me a number to call and since I am rural I will have to pay for a service call even though the machine is still under warranty. They affirmed there is nowhere I can take the machine for service. And the appliance clerk was not very nice about it either. I will not shop there again! read more

I had problems getting a new washer/drier delivered to my apt. The landlady gave her office address and phone number for delivery and then left for a meeting. She didn't give my address and phone number.Duh! After waiting forever! I called the manager at Lowe's. He was absolutely great. Intelligent, funny, someone who gets the job done right. Delivery was scheduled for a Thurs.with next delivery Sunday - too long for me. The delivery guys, on a night with lightening and heavy rain, where going to try to deliver Friday evening late. This review is for Don Dodd at Lowe's for Appliance deliveries. My experience with Lowe's delivery was not so good. However Don and Jon came back to fix a problem with a pedestal. They fixed the issue and then Don spent just a little extra time and put the washer closer to where I initially wanted it and I didn't have to call my plummer like I was advised prior on the first delivery. This store has the worst customer service I have experienced in a very long time. No one knew what was going on. I was tossed back and forth between 3 clerks for 30 minutes. All I wanted to do was pick up my dish washer. Even clerks in the lighting dept. would not move to the side so I could walk by. It was like I was invisible. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. The refrigerator that was supposed to be delivered a week ago was delivered today. The installers said we had to turn the water off, so we shit the water off to the entire house and released the pressure from the pipes. After continually trying to please the installers while they were on Snapchat and Instagram, it was obvious that they weren't there to do their jobs. They took the fridge and left. Did I mention that they didn't reconnect the old refrigerator and pushed it over the puddle mess they made. Didn't know an install was supposed to cause my wife a significant emotional event. I just wanted to write a brief update to say I still go to Lowes pretty frequently and have had excellent customer service from both Nick and Angie. Angie has helped me in the paint department quite a few times and has given amazing advice. She knows what she's doing! They generally have what I'm looking for, and the prices are decent. Not as cheap as Menard's, but I'm willing to pay it, knowing they treat their employees better than Menard's. I like Lowe's more than the Home Depot. Both have the same midrange products, but where Home Depot offers below average products too, Lowe's tends to stretch toward a higher end product, too. I would've given it 4 stars, but they suffer from the same thing so many retail locations do: they scatter crap all over the store. I was in there last weekend, and they have an entire aisle dedicated toward holiday lighting. You would think you could find everything you need in that aisle. The help told me that everything was right there. It wasn't. I eventually found the rest of what I needed as I made my way to the register, scattered about 4 different endcap displays and kiosks. I had some Kraft made cabinets installed did a good job of installing( the crew thats why they are getting one star) them but we are stating to have a few problems so NO service after the sale Very poor customer service talked to the factory reps myself to try and get thing fix with no help from Lowes. I have observed as 6 employees literally stood around and watched a line at the 2 open cash registers grow to the point of being a fire escape hazard. Lowe's often has what I need, but the Ames location has some of the worst service I have ever experienced. Even if all the folks working have different job categories and aren't able to run registers and check customers out, good management would tell them to go hide somewhere else. It looks bad, and is incredibly frustrating, to stand in line for 15 mins while people you believe could help won't jump in and make things happen faster. read more

If there was any other option for a large home improvement store in the Ames area I would go there. I ordered a bathroom vanity top for a remodel of my parent's bathroom while my Dad was in the hospital. We were on a tight schedule to complete the project before my Dad got home, it took four weeks for the bathroom vanity top to get it, which was fine. But, the dimension of it when it did arrive we're incorrect. The Lowe's customer service rep apologized profusely... But then it took them another FIVE weeks to get me the corrected order. So, longer than the original order time, to fix a mistake! Then when I finally picked up the corrected one they had me sign an acknowledgement of receiving the order at customer service, didn't give me a copy, and didn't have somebody come with me to help load it in my vehicle (which I would have appreciated), so naturally... I am somewhat disappointed with the customer service at this lowes. My wife and I were shopping for a New washer and dryer and it took a very long time (20 minutes) to find anyone willing to help us. Once we did find someone we tried to get everything ordered necessary for the new appliances to be delivered and setup. We specifically asked about the steam feature of the new dryer, but when it was delivered we found that they had not sold us a hose set to get the steam feature functional in the dryer. read more
