I can't imagine a better place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of New England in autumn. Our lodge had a stone fireplace with plenty of chopped wood to help us southerners with the slight chill. Plus, we loved the smell of a wood fire. Sunset Lodges are a good base camp for excursions: Lake W (2 steps from our front door), The Sandwich fair, the Shaker Village, HIKING, Sandwich Creamery, etc. Good restaurants in the area but all the same it was awesome to have a fully stocked kitchen - eating out for 5 days got tiresome. Little details were also appreciated - plenty of strong, hot water, great towels, central heat and really nice sheets. It's not totally roughing it but you are definitely in touch with nature at every turn, I can't remember who described it as "the place before the Interstate System" - but that's it. Except we had wifi. It's a special, special treasure and we are happy to have found it. We will most definitely return - we are thinking to try each season at Sunset Lodge.

The bed was very comfortable, and while I wish the pillows had been a little larger, they were still comfortable. The room also had a pull-out couch and a large TV. The bathroom was great, with a nice shower and wall-mounted shampoo, conditioner, and body wash provided. One thing I loved was the air conditioner. The fan was nice and loud, which meant I didn't even need to use my white noise machine to sleep--I slept great! We didn't use the fitness room, so I can't comment on that. Breakfast was grab-and-go style with a nice selection including cereal, yogurt, breakfast sandwiches, and toast. We ended up going to the bagel shop across the street instead, but it looked like there were plenty of good options available at the hotel. Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would absolutely stay here again. Patrick's across the street has a great dinner. There's a laundromat and a wine store in that same mall. The suite we stayed in was older but very big with a full kitchen, living room and bedroom which is what I was looking for. The sofa bed was kind of bent out of shape but they have brand new plush mattress toppers. This is like staying in a condo, with a physical metal key. Elaine (I think that was her name) was so nice and I felt like I was visiting her house, she was so welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast is grab and go; breakfast sandwiches, yogurt, fruit cups, instant oatmeal, cereal/milk, muffins, granola bars etc, all prepackaged food. Honestly it was great that they even offered that. There's a convenience store across the street that you can buy food if you have a kitchen if you want to make hot prepared food. The air conditioning/heating is thru wall units so it can be noisy going on and off all night so I just used earplugs.

As a person in recovery, being this close to constant drinking was uncomfortable and had I known about it I would have skipped it. The owners also let their dog roam around, so be aware if any of your party has a fear of dogs. The only place to swim involves you jumping off the dock into area deep enough for boats to dock, so we had to find state parks each day. The beds were comfortable. The view was nice. It wasn't enough to keep us there for the duration of our vacation.

No coffee maker or fridge in the room. The price is reasonable and is about half of what I just paid to get a room in Boston. Some of the best times we had were at night when it gets cool enough to sit around the large fireplace under the gazebo. Very nice. We also rented a boat for some water sport and docked at Wolfeboro for lunch. Five stars for the location and beauty of this family run business.

My first summer vacation to New Hampshire took place in my second year. Forty-six years later, I've…read morenever missed a summer. To say I'm an enthusiast of the Lakes Region would be putting it mildly. I'm mad for it. From Winnipesaukee to Wentworth, from Mirror to Winnisquam, from Waukewan to Squam, I've stayed at camps and rented cottages on all. And with each visit I've fallen more irrevocably in love with New Hampshire. So it always surprises me, after four decades of visits, to find something (or somewhere!) new. And should that new place prove to touch my heart as other have, I am at once delighted and dazed, amazed that a region I already love so fervently might have hidden treasure left to show me. And so I address my recent stay at the Pow Wow Lodges Motel and Cottages with troves of enthusiasm, fond memories and gratitude. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by Sally (Fairbanks) who welcomed us to her long-held family lodging like old friends. After giving us a short tour of the grounds (which include a charming public dock complete with fire engine red geraniums, two matching Adirondack chairs, and a knock-your-socks-off view of Mirror Lake) we ended up at Cottage #2. Like its three sisters, our cottage featured two small bedrooms (perfect for our family of four), a well-equipped kitchen, a typical lake cottage bathroom (serviceable, not fancy), a darling sitting room with an overstuffed plaid loveseat and rocker, and a "sleeping porch" with another twin bed. We found the accommodations clean and comfortable, if a bit squeaky, and a throw-back to simpler times when air-conditioning was eschewed for fans that didn't totally muffle the call of the loons as the sun went down. Our very reasonably-priced cottage included use of our own dock and rowboat (my son caught several sunnies on Mirror Lake!), a paddle boat, and a public float about twenty feet from the shore. We spent every day in the lake and found it to be a perfect respite from the hot sun of lower New England; clear and refreshing, a longing rises within me as I remember the many happy hours we spent swimming, splashing and jumping off the float. Sally is an efficient, gentle omnipresence at the lake-camp her parents started, and where she was raised with her sister, Betsy. She is warm and kind, knowledgeable about the surrounding area, and helpful without being intrusive. If there is such thing as a "perfect" host these days, Sally surely fits the bill. I cannot recommend the Pow Wow Lodges Motel and Cottage highly enough except to say that we left a piece of our hearts in Mirror Lake, and it remainds there, looking up at the gray cottages that dot the shoreline. We will certainly need to return one summer soon, if only to be reunited with it once again. Five enthusiastic typical-lake-camp-with-a-hint-of-magic stars. Thank you, sweet Sally.

The Afton Inn is without a doubt one of the most well decorated and welcoming inn's I have ever visited. The restoration of the farmhouse and barn took two solid years of work and you see the incredible attention to detail the minute you pull around the bend and the beautiful sliding red barn door comes into view. Some might argue that a stay in the Lakes Region is not complete without a night on the lake, but we found the tranquility of the rural farmland coupled with the tastefully designed decor more than enough to keep us comfortable and content for the night.
