The first time the phlebotomist punctured straight through my vein and didn't notice causing a lot of blood to gather under the skin. Large hematoma as a result and couldn't give until the bruise was gone. Came back a few weeks later and the phlebotomist made a mistake setting up the machine causing my blood to remain in the machine instead of returning to me. So now I've been deferred for 8 weeks! Because of this I have lost out on about $1500 right before Christmas when I was really counting on it.

Today I was at this office to attend multiple training's for the disaster services team. As a volunteer we can deploy when called to communities impacted by a variety of disasters. The recent Polar Vortex in WNY, shelters were opened and guess what, people are needed to provide assistance to those seeking shelters. The big hurricane or earthquake in another state or country, guess what volunteers from the Red Cross go down to provide assistance. That is people from your community giving their time to help those most in need. Other services the Red Cross provides include Sound the Alarm. This is a program where you can submit a request, no questions asked. (no income requirements, rental, homeowners, etc) Disaster Services volunteers and other trained volunteers will come to your home and install free smoke alarms into your home. These NEW alarms that follow the NYS guidelines (that change April 2019) have a 10 year lifespan and LED batteries that you are not required to change out every 6 months. Do you want to learn more how to be prepared for a natural disaster? How about a man-made disaster? Concerned on what actions to take with an active shooter? The Disaster Services volunteers offer a program, put together by NYS to teach you and your community how to prepare. Concerned about fire safety and your children? Disaster Services can come into your school or community center to teach the Pillowcase Program, a Disney sponsored, kid-friendly, kid-designed fire safety program and guess what, that isn't everything. You can CPR certification training, lifeguard training, babysitting and even a store so you can buy a fully stocked first act or other supplies you may need in the event of an emergency. So continue to give blood, there is always a need if that is your thing but also remember there are so many other ways you can help your community as well.

I've been coming here for years, but finally back into a groove of donating platelets; I'm pretty content with the experience. They are very friendly and competent. Going back about 50 years I used to donate to the Red Cross. Red Cross does wonderful things for people in need but I found out that they were charging local hospitals an exorbitant amount for blood. That is why local hospitals approached Unyts which had been an organ donor organization to start collecting blood for them. So all the blood collected by Unyts goes to local hospitals. The Red cross sends much if not all of what they collect to other areas so they can get a good price for the blood.

The interior is newly renovated, clean and neat. Don't be afraid to donate, it only takes about 30 minutes total of your time and all the blood remains local. Also, the wait here is crazy and when you finally do get up to the counter they will turn you away if they think you "Look anxious" or "Look hungry" (wtf) even if you pass the protein and vitals checks. Feels scammy, like they're trying to get different people each time so they don't have to keep paying out. Personally, I would avoid.

Had to wait 15 mins after and then on my way. Everyone was friendly. The nurse was amazing and super personable. You get super cold at the end of the donation so expect that you will shiver uncontrollably. I was told it's normal. Make sure u stay hydrated before the appt with electrolytes and have protein like beef jerky, nuts, etc. I was recommended by a friend to go here and I've recommended it to 3 others. It was a good experience and everything was explained well.
