The Burning Barrel - Yellow squash cake, lemon honey ice cream, mulberry compote

The five-course meal, crafted by a remarkably talented chef using a variety of techniques from their farm, was beautifully executed in a surreal indoor-outdoor setting. Every dish was spectacular, and the beverage pairings were creative and perfectly curated. The owners' labor of love is evident from start to finish, making this a true gem in the Lawrence/Lecompton area. Our guests from Leawood, Kansas said they would gladly make the drive back anytime to experience another one of these magical culinary evenings.

We arrived on the farm (after our Ford GPS took us a wonky route along a few miles of dirt road--so make sure you stay on paved roads and you won't have trouble--I was told by Kristin, our host and one of the owners, that Google Maps has no problem). I have to share our experience in detail because I feel we discovered a new must-visit experience in the KC area! We arrived at the 30-acre farm, parked in the field, and were greeted by our server who welcomed us warmly and offered us an arrival cocktail to sip while we explored the truly lovely grounds, pond, and nearby goats. After our leisurely stroll, we returned to the dining pavilion and found our seats at the gorgeous (and massive!) live-edge dining table along with a menu specifically for this weekend. Our gracious host Kristen and server brought out our first drink pairing, a minted lime seltzer that was refreshing and light. Our first course arrived--Blue Jade cornbread with arugula, sweet pea salad, and chicken liver paté. The cornbread was unlike any I had before and was absolutely delicious. The sweet pea salad was literally bursting with flavor the peas were so fresh and the chicken liver paté out of this world. Such an interesting flavor profile and combination. The next beverage pairing arrived a short time later as we enjoyed the perfect evening, a blackberry purple basil shrub. This drink was also delicious and refreshing (and save that blackberry for last--what a treat!). The Mangalista pig, we were told, is the "wagyu of pork" and the crisp, tasty, marbled pork chop was excellent. It was served with a beet "kimchi" with fennel root and a sheep cheese dumpling that was creamy and flavorful. Finally, our coffees were served and a dessert of yellow squash cake, lemon honey ice cream with mulberry compote was brought to us. Again, the dish was original, delicious, and a perfect ending to our meal. We can't wait to come back and have try a new menu in the future. Such a perfect evening and the chef has such an exciting vision for hyper-local farm-to-table flavors and dishes.

You are not allowed to decorate the arbor even though all the pictures of the venue show it decorated. Strip the beds and throw the towels down the laundry chute and sort them. Take out the trash. Clean off the counters and clean the mirrors, etc... the rooms have to be paid for by 1100. Idek how many times we got that message. Gave us a lot of unnecessary stress.

The old "barn" is a rustic but gorgeous dining and table space downstairs (with a small bar), the upstairs more of a ballroom feel with stage, lots of space up to the rafters which is where I'm guessing most weddings are held as it was today. Surely they are on Yelp and have been reviewed I thought as I was working, got done and drove home. Yes, on Yelp, never reviewed. Well, let's just take care of that. Lots of parking for guests, beautiful outdoor patio area made of rustic timbers, several wedding arches, lots of places that appear to be set for photographic appeal, etc. The grounds are gorgeous. Plenty of charm, good space, and best of all, away from town a but on the far edge of North Lawrence so maybe 5 minutes from city center. Easy access for folks from KC or Topeka and the turnpike. I love this place. As someone who has been married more than once, it is unlikely I'll do that (fingers crossed) again, but should I, I'd want it here and a big party to boot. Fact, the folks we played for today were musicians and were spending most of the rest of the afternoon there just having a proper jam session. Fun. This is a great place. Worth checking out if you're in need of a gathering spot for a lot of people for all kinds of occasions.

Holiday inn Express Lawrence,  KS…read more My husband,  daughter  and I decided to stay at this hotel because  my husband has stayed at several other HIE hotels  on business in other cities  and liked them. Not so here. In fact, it was truly awful.  We booked a week here. Not a brief visit. We arrived late on a Friday night and had conveyed we'd be late due to a long drive. When I went to check in about 9:30pm a male, Asian front desk clerk said 'oh good. You're the last one I'm waiting for.'  OK ... we got our keys and went up to our Room 202. Immediately noticed a strong, stale, moldy mildew smell. The bathroom had wallpaper peeling off and a lot of mold in the shower crevices. The next morning, we went down to the grab and go breakfast. If you enjoy high sugar,  prepackaged gas station food...this one's for you.  I asked if there were any hard boiled eggs.  No. Coffee had no nondairy creamer and tasted like dirty water. We told the front desk  girl about the smell in our room and also requested additional towels.   When we used the keurig in our room, it was no better than the lobby coffee.  Headed to  IHOP disappointed. Upon returning that evening,  the smell in the room was no better. We ran the air conditioner  24/7. No extra towels....but there were dirty, wet ones in the wardrobe from the previous person. Gross. By the third morning, my husband and I were feeling terrible. Headaches,  congestion, generally  awful. That morning, we told the front desk they needed to resolve the smell and, by the way, still no extra towels and trash is overflowing.  That evening, we could tell something had been sprayed to cover the odor but the problem was not solved. My husband  went down to the front desk to  insist on a new room while my daughter and I packed up our stuff...including  the towels and wash cloths we finally got the  previous evening. Still trash and wet towels in the room. We moved to Room 224. Thankfully,  this room had no smell and was in good condition.  It is apparent that housekeeping and  maintenance  staff desperately need training. Our second room was never turned either. We saw the manager on 3 separate occasions,  including checkout,  and were never asked how our stay was. We noticed he was in his office and wondered how it's possible to manage a hotel from behind a desk? Hopefully,  the corporate owner and/or Holiday  Inn will realize this facility  requires desperate help so other customers will not be subjected to these issues in the future.
