This place was actually pretty cool and we had a great time, especially aided by the fact that a band was playing and the atmosphere was very lively. The burgers themselves are pretty OK/good. We each had the swiss burger and the buns were lightly toasted, the mushrooms and tasty and the burger patty itself was OK (a tad overcooked, but decent). All in all, it needed a little ketchup, but was tasty. We also got a choice of tots, fries or slaw with the burger, which is nice to see (and no upcharges for either choice). All in all, for under $20, we had a nice evening meal and got to enjoy a live band. The crowd is older, but the place is lively and efficient on the right nights. Don't be intimidated -- you may need to seat yourself once you walk in, we were a little confused when we walked in, but as we sat down someone took our order and things were smooth from there on it. TLDR; not fancy, older veteran mess hall with dirt cheap prices, a bar and sometimes live music.

Excellent VFW with great service and good food. I would recommend to anyone. Love the atmosphere…read morewith many windows and plenty of televisions.

This is for Lenten fish fry: ATMOSPHERE - This is one of the…read morebiggest VFWs I've been to. There's a large bar area, then in an adjoining room is a dinning space with another bar. It's very patriotic as you might imagine. There were lots of kids around, and everyone knew each other, which was lovely except there was a "you don't belong" attitude by some. In particular, the server in the bar in the dinning area ignored my two girlfriends to the point of taking an order from a gentleman standing BEHIND them. Thankfully the gentleman called her on it, and made her take their order. And I'm glad to say that was the only person who was openly rude. In fact, the people at the fish fry were all super friendly. FISH - The set up here is really great. You wait in line to pay, then the line becomes a line for the buffet. It's great to be able to fill up your own plate. The buffet table had baked beans, macaroni & cheese, dinner rolls, boiled potatoes with parsley, cole slaw, and of course, fish. A new serving of freshly fried fish came out every few minutes to replenish the buffet table. The fish had a breading type of batter (rather than a light fluffy batter.) It was light and flakey, hot and crispy, it was wonderful. COST - $10, this was a steal! EXTRAS - When we were there former Gov. Pawlenty and his family showed up. Plus or negative, that's your call.

Everyone raves about their Lenten Friday fish fries (we used to volunteer with or scout troop to…read morehelp bus tables), but fish has never been something I enjoy. We usually go with my parents after church on Saturdays. Most of the tables in the bar area are high top, and we have a 9-month old, so that can be difficult if all the lower tables are taken. But they do have high chairs available that work fine at the lower tables. Their food is always good, affordable, and out to your table quick. If it's crazy-busy with people ordering food, it might take a while, since I've never seen more than one cook in their small kitchen (they have another one that gets used for fish fries), but we've never had a problem, since most people are just ordering drinks. They only part that's a bit of a bummer for us, is that if you order a pop (the hubbs and I don't usually order alcoholic beverages), it comes in a small solo cup, and you have to pay for a refill (I'm sure that's part of being a bar). We each typically order a water and a pop right away, then we don't go thirsty or have to pay for another small pop.

If you've got time for lunch between 11 and 1 on weekdays, head to the Legion for the best burgers…read morein town. Fried to perfection, heaped on buttery toasted buns, and served piping hot, these are my go-to, guilty-pleasure, gut-filling, mouth pleasing favorites. Simple, no-frills, and just plain perfect. You can almost skip the ketchup. There are weekly specials that tempt, but I've always stuck to the burgers, and have never regretted doing so. It's greasy-spoon, homestyle food, served quickly and simply. They don't need to make it look pretty because it tastes SO good. The ambiance is as you'd expect inside a small, veteran-supporting facility: low-key, a little dark, lots of armed service memorabilia on the walls, a tv, pull-tabs, and a bar. It's a smoke-free facility so you don't come out stinking like an ashtray. The servers and other patrons are always happy to see new folks come in, and someone's always around to refill your drinks. Don't come for a salad. You'll likely be disappointed. But do come for the double cheeseburger (a feast on its own), the waffle fries and fried tots, and the tangy coleslaw. A double cheeseburger with tots, coleslaw, and pickles is about $10.

This American Legion is hidden, but definitely worth seeking out. I see there is now a digital…read moresign but it's still not easy to locate. Inside is bright and pleasant with plenty of tables and high tops, în addition to the bar. They have a good selection of tap beers and bottles. And they make a mean mixed drink! They have a great menu. There are daily specials and burger and sandwiches. Portions are huge. The burgers are really well done and come on a potato bun. Delicious! You can bring your own decorations. The party organizers did order 2 food options for the party (more so lite bites). They were things i don't eat so I asked the bartender about ordering other food and was able to order from the full menu and it was served to me at the party. I got wings which advertised having a special house dry rub, buffalo sauce on the side and a side of fries. The wings weren't the greatest flavor wise. Kind of bland with the dry rub. the fries weren't fine. They had a holiday/December specials menu and I got a few of the Cherry pie cocktails. It was good! Our bartender did a great job all around. She kept the tables clean/cleared off as well as served everyone as needed Parking was fine as they had parking on both sides of the building as well as doors to get in.

Dear Apple Valley American Legion,…read more On behalf of our residents and staff, I wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you for the wonderful experience we had during our lunch outing today. My name is Brooke, and I am the Life Enrichment Director. Today, I brought a group of 27 seniors to enjoy lunch at your restaurant, and I cannot say enough about how impressed we were. Our waitress was the only server working the entire restaurant, yet you never would have known it. She remained calm, organized, and friendly throughout our visit. She treated every one of our residents with genuine kindness, made sure everyone had what they needed, and provided exceptional service from beginning to end. What could have been a very stressful and overwhelming situation turned into a relaxed, enjoyable, and memorable outing because of her professionalism and positive attitude. Our residents have not stopped talking about what a wonderful time they had. In fact, they have already started asking if we can make lunch at the Apple Valley American Legion a monthly outing! That speaks volumes about the welcoming atmosphere and outstanding service we experienced. Please pass along our sincere appreciation to our waitress and everyone involved in making our visit so special. Thank you for your hospitality and for creating such a positive experience for our residents. We look forward to visiting again soon. With gratitude, Brooke Life Enrichment Director
