Appreciate the lockers for my personal belongings at the presentation area. The rest of the steps and assembly lines were just the way I remembered it. First time to volunteer with this organization and it was an amazing experience! The ease of…read moresigning up for shifts was great, everything is done on-line. We arrived about 15 minutes prior to our 9am shift and there were several groups there as well. We were brought into the large room where the market is located (more in a moment on this) and found lockers to lock our things up (you can't wear hoop earrings, rings, necklaces, etc.). They give you small plastic baggies to put your stuff in; you are also required to wear a hair net and men with facial hair was also required to wear a beard net. We watched a couple of videos that explained what we would be packing and where it was shipped to as well as specifics for the actual packing station. It is so rewarding to know that these Mano Packs are shipped to countries where children suffer greatly from malnutrition. At the end they actually give you a sample of what we packed. It was like a savory oatmeal and included rice, protein, a mixture of dehydrated veggies and a scoop of powdered vitamins and nutrients. It was good actually. We were at a packing station with some others including children and once everyone decided on which job we wanted to do, after a few minutes and bags, we found our packing rhythm. They have a very precise method to the packing of these meal bags and with music, cheering, etc...the two hours flew by! If you are looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, check them out. We are going back for a second time and I think we'll make this one of our regular volunteer opportunities. Staff working is great and helpful and so passionate about the work they are doing! The marketplace includes crafts made by the people of the different villages around the world. We learned that not only are the families given food packets but they are also signed up for resources and employment opportunities and everything else in an effort to make their lives better. The performance was fun and full of energy--the cast did a great job bringing the story to life. You could tell they worked hard, and the production had a lot of heart. It's a nice place to check out if you want to support local youth theater and see some talented young performers in action. We had a good time!

You can tell they truly enjoyed being there and it made attending so much more enjoyable. The choreography was on point and I really enjoyed the singing as well. They did a great job at capturing the Footloose film in a very quality production. I certainly was pleased with the price I paid for this experience. Bianca was very kind, helpful, and accommodating as I purchased my ticket last minute. She was able to sort seats around so I was able to sit next to someone who had purchased well in advance. "Phoenix Youth at Risk (now 'New Pathways for Youth') transforms the lives of at-risk youth through…read morementoring. We unlock futures so that youth in trouble do not become adults in trouble." Phoenix Youth At Risk is a non profit mentoring organization founded in 1987 to help at-risk youth of the greater Phoenix area redirect their lives with the help of adult volunteer mentors. The goal is to help kids and teenagers recognize and expound upon their potential as outstanding citizens. They have two programs. The New Pathways Mentoring Program is a 9-month program consisting of one-on-one and group mentoring for teenagers who may otherwise fall through the cracks. The Positive Adult Leaders in Society (P.A.L.S) program matches youth ages 5-15 who are in homeless transitional housing with adult mentors for at least one year. Having never mentored in my life, the thought of helping a child was intriguing and scary all at the same time. I decided to jump on board with Phoenix Youth at Risk nearly 2 years ago and was immediately paired with a wonderfully gifted teenage girl. The P.A.L.S program asks that you be able to commit at least one hour a week to taking your youth out for at least one year. You could simply take them out to lunch, out bowling, to a museum, to your home, or the like. You become a positive influence in their life through just being you. It's an incredibly simple premise, yet one that can leave a lasting impression for years to come, for both mentor and mentee! Joining this organization was one of the best decisions I've ever made. There's no greater joy than helping a child see their full potential and I can say that the joy my youth gives me is the same, if not greater than the joy I give her. If you want to make a lasting impression in a child's life, please consider Phoenix Youth at Risk as a valuable life changing experience for both you and your youth! They are ALWAYS in need of volunteers, but especially adult males willing to mentor boys!!

I enjoyed the upbeat atmosphere at the orientation when the project manager was providing…read moreinformation about the program. However, during the interview process I was a little disappointed. I felt that some of the questions were inappropriate and it made me feel uncomfortable answering them. I don't think that anyone should be asked about their sexual orientation or if they had experienced any abuse in their lives. I realize that this is a nonprofit organization working with at-risk youth, but I felt like this organization delved a little too deep into a potential volunteers personal history. I think their initial screening and some of their requirements limit the amount of volunteers that they get. Unfortunately, this effects the amount of mentors available for the children in the program. The interview felt more like a very intensive and revealing job interview more than a volunteer interview. In addition, I felt a bit judged by the interviewer when I answered some of the questions. I left the building thinking my time would probably be better spent someplace else.
