If you haven't hung out at an American Legion, you don't know what you're missing. Regardless of the GPS coordinates, you'll have a good time. This used to be my stomping grounds when I lived in AZ many decades ago. The 411: *Veteran Supportive *Live Music *Full Bar *Pool Tables *Tasty, greasy food - you have to place the order at the window & your Server will bring it to you *Dance Floor *Abundant of tables & chairs inside/outside *Spacious outside Patio with a Bar & Dance Floor-a new addition since my heyday visits *Dance Lessons during the week The parking logistics are plenty whether in the parking lot, across the street, or on the side of the building in the dirt lot close to 16th Street. The cover charge is $10 & everyone gets patted down.

Vaughn Willis & Ear Candy at The American Legion Post 65

3Sep23: We visited The American Legion Post 65 to see local live musicians Vaughn Willis and Ear Candy. Arrived a little after 7 pm, pleasantly greeted by security and the door crew, quickly stopped by the kitchen to order Soul food: fried snapper with two slices of bread, hot sauce, a side of fries, seasoned greens and Mac & cheese. The fish was dry-crispy on the outside, tendered on the inside, fries were lightly seasoned and crisp; the greens were delicious as was the Mac & cheese, crisp on top and tenderly cheesy inside! The patrons were mature, friendly and respectful! The inside music had a good selection of dance music. The outside patio area was well lite, two large mister fans, and ample seating when you arrive before band sets up. The musicians are incredibly talented with outstanding vocals, rhythm, pizazz, class and swagger! The only down side to the entire experience was the strong presence of smoke! I am not a smoker and it was extremely unfortunate to have my experience overwhelmed with the amount of smoke that I had to immediately clean my clothes and self upon getting home. I felt like I was at an establishment pre-non-smoking laws. There should be a designated area in the furthest corner of the parking that has secretion fans to eliminate the smoke scent. This is my only reluctance to re-visit for any live outdoor entertainment here. Otherwise, I enjoyed my visit thoroughly!

It's like a hole in the wall type place, as most American Legions are. This one had a chef in the kitchen, but we got there too late and were being charged the price of a full plate, for just meat. LOL You can't make this stuff up, but I was starving and just went with it, since I planned on drinking. There's ample parking, they have their own lot. Atmosphere: Seems like a place of regulars. Dark, bar surrounded with plexi glass. I wasn't sure if it was for bullets or because of Covid. LOLBVVS They have a dance floor area, room full of tables and a bar with stools. Service: The bartender was great. She was friendly, knew how to make a good drink and was a little sociable. IDK that I would come back on my own accord, but if I flew into town and my gf who lives there wanted to go, I'd go with her. #kanyeshrug

Always a great place to frequent when you want to ball on a budget. They offer affordable stiff adult beverages from mixed cocktail to shots. The kitchen have tasty fresh and hot affordable menu items. They specialize in fried fish, shrimp and chicken. They have music on the patio and inside. It's a cool spot to stop by any day of the week.

3 piece catfish on bread with cornbread

Came here for the soul food Sunday special. It was the best soul food I've had in Phoenix. It is open to the general public and I got there right after opening (12 pm). Got a 3 piece catfish combo thats comes with 1 side & cornbread, but I added an additional side. Everything was good. The fish was fried to perfection. I also love that rhe cornbread wasn't overly sweet. I believe the greens have smoked turkey.

Where else can you go and hear good music, consume cheap (and strong) drinks and enjoy some perfectly cooked fried chicken and catfish?

I put 2 stars instead of 1 because of my prior experience with them that was good, 5+ years ago…read morenow. I'm not sure what's happened there since then. All I know is that for this past year (it is now March 2026), every time I try to sign up for something that Heidi Heniger is in charge of/decides who gets selected to attend, I DON'T get selected. It's supposed to be based on if you've attended an event recently (as in, those who haven't attended an event recently get selected first), how many events you have attended recently, etc. In this last year, I've attended 3 events: a 12 week Personal Training FYI session (not sure if there is a limit in capacity for that) in May 2025 and two sessions for the First Friday Walking Club (which I don't believe anyone is denied as it is outside at a park, so there is essentially unlimited space) in June and September 2025. Prior to that, going back to July 2024, I attended 3 virtual events and 1 in-person event. In this last year, I have attempted to sign up for a spring training game, a garden event and this recent sound bath event. All have been with Heidi and all have been denied. After this recent denial for the sound bath event I emailed Heidi and asked if there is something I needed to do to get selected. I never received a response. Since I didn't receive any emails or communication from Heidi, I spoke with another WWP POC of mine at a different office since I can't seem to get ahold of anyone at this office here in Phoenix. After they spoke, I was told that the reason for my continual denial was some coding thing that was wrong in the system. Yet I can get approved for online things or when someone else runs it, but not Heidi? And Heidi never contacted me about this? Never responded to my email when I asked what can I do to get approved? All I received was the standard denial email stating "Regretfully, I am unable to accept your registration for this event due to the high interest and limited number of spots available." Yeah, that's BS and we all know it. Oh, and I had signed up 8 days prior to this denial email AND the sound bath event stayed open for registration for at least a day after I received this denial as well. I have still received no communication from Heidi. If this coding error was truly the case, you'd think she would want to respond to me herself and clear things up. I don't know what is going on here...are these events actually being held? Do others get approved for these and it's just me who keeps getting denied? Or are they just listing events but not actually doing them and just pocketing the money? Whatever is going on, they need to be looked into and it seems like they need a HUGE overhaul.

He is nearly blind but because of the adaptive bike he rode he was able to be independent. Not having to have to steer the bike as there was also another rider steering on the tandem bicycle. We met so many amazing people both staff and people that came to the event. We did yoga to help relax, it was really geared for the people that were there. The staff was simply amazing. They talked to each person as if they were family & loved ones. Everyone was included no one was left out no one was left behind. This is an event that I wish every soldier could go on after their service. It's that amazing! Thank you to all the donate to the Wounded Warrior project and make this available.
