Old Jail and Firehouse Suite - Interior of guest suite

    Old Jail and Firehouse Suite

The Old Jail and FIrehouse Guest Suite is a a one-room suite complete with kitchen, dining area,…read morequeen bed, day bed/trundle and small fold-out bed. There is a quiet courtyard as well. When we arrived in McGregor, we were immediately greeted by Richard and Charlene who made sure we parked in a safe location. Richard helped with our bags. As we entered the suite, our senses are bombarded with an Americana motif taken to the nth degree. Almost every square inch is decorated by images and pictures of the old jail and firehouse. The Palucci's will fill you in on the history of the jail and some interesting stories. in addition, there are old trickets and toys representing firemen and the jail theme. Charlene's father was a fireman in Chicago and she has a tribute of him displayed in the kitchen area. Just about every square inch of this room is covered with something. Even the ceiling is wallpapered. If you have sensitivity to sensory overload then this is definitely not the place for you. But, if you appreciate the time and care that went into trying to make this one-room reflect the history of the town, then you will really appreciate the decor and ambiance. Although not officially a Bed and Breakfast, the Palucci's have generously stocked the fridge with pastries and cinnamon rolls, milk, juice, jellies, etc. The pantry has coffee, teas, and snacks. Richard and Charlene have gone out of their way to make sure you can make your way through all the switches and amenities that the place has to offer. In fact, they have written directions for EVERYTHING in the room. There are directions for which light switch is for which area of the room, how to turn the key to open the door, how long to keep the A/C running. You'll either find it endearing or eccentric. Another consideration is the location to Main Street. The room itself if just feet from Main Street and the Mississippi River is only about 4 blocks. But, with the big picture window open, all passerby's can see in. Not a big deal since you can close the blinds for privacy (there's even a note on how to do that). Overall, we really enjoyed our visit at the Old Jail and Firehouse Guest Suite. We found it clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the friendliness and care from RIchard and Charlene. We would definitely stay there again!

First off let me start by saying our waitress was very attentive but when i order cheese dip (queso) I not only expect the dish to not be made of styrofoam but also be full. The cheese dip was not even halfway full and we were charged $4 for it and it looked more like soup than cheese dip. The prices we paid are average when it comes to a mexican restaurant but the size of the meals were cut in half than what is normal, none of us had leftovers which is highly unusual. And the food is NOT AUTHENTIC. We got fried rice not spanish rice with our meals and the veggies were not fully cooked but partially raw. This gives off the idea that all they did was nuke it or something. The food was bland and had absolutely no spice to it which is a major disappointment when the salsa had a nice kick to it. We were given paper plates and the owner has stated that this is due to COVID-19 measures in a response to another persons review. I call bull. No other restaurant is doing this. It is just being done out of shear lazziness. We will not be going back.

Stopped in here after visiting Pikes Peak/Bridal Veil Falls Saturday afternoon…read more No one greeted us. Had to ask other guests if we needed to wait or seat ourselves. Took an ungodly long time for a server to come to our table, drop off menus and take a drink order. After another long wait we got our drinks and he took our order. Pay attention to the menu. Lots of up charges. Refill on salsa for chips... Up charge. One free drink refill...additional refills. Up charge. We ordered a chimichanga meal and a four taco combo. The kitchen messed up the order...two tacos instead of four. Had to point it out to our server. Food itself was decent. Sides of rice and beans were tiny. Not sure what the deal with service was, but we won't be back if we're passing through the McGregor area again. We'll hold out for Olwein or someplace with more options next time.
