Worst communication and product imaginable. That is how I would describe American Asphalt, and specifically Todd (I think he's the owner). My driveway was seal coated on 09/02. A few weeks later there were multiple areas with cracks and weeds started growing through some of the cracks. At one point, my backpack leaf blower was able to blow a section of asphalt up while I was doing leaf cleanup. Probably should have been patched, but Todd didn't agree. I called Todd at the beginning of October and was told a crew would be out in about 2 weeks to fix it. I called a couple weeks later and was told a crew would be out before Halloween to fix it. I called a week after Halloween and was told I'm on the list and a crew would be out at some point to fix it, then Todd just hung up without even allowing me to ask a follow-up question. I called again on 11/24 and after telling him what was wrong (for the 4th time), he said he would have to charge me to fix the issues since I cleaned the driveway myself instead of his company cleaning it. Cleaning the driveway was NOT a part of the original quote and when we discussed it during the first site visit, Todd said he could do it or I could save some money and do it myself. He never mentioned that doing it myself would void the warranty on the work. I pressure had washed my driveway three times prior to it being seal coated. After some yelling back and forth, the call ended with him calling me a "f*cking r*tard" and hanging up. I tried calling back 5 or so times and he never answered or returned my call. Not only was the product crap, now I need to pay to have a different company seal it again. Since Todd took so long to respond, almost 2 months after the initial call, I can't get it done until the weather allows, which will probably be after winter and spring. I feel like Todd glazing over getting the driveway cleaned and not including it in the quote is a business tactic used to get out of the warranty on his subpar "seal coating". I have no proof of this, but after the past 3 months of dealing with him, it wouldn't surprise me. I urge anyone considering American Asphalt to check the Better Business Bureau. Todd has 8 complaints against him over the past 3 years. A direct quote from the BBB website is "American Asphalt Sealcoating is NOT a BBB Accredited Business. To become accredited, a business must agree to BBB Standards for Trust and pass BBB's vetting process." Take the negative google reviews seriously. The headache and lack of communication are not worth it if you have any issues with the final product. At which point Todd will probably call you a "f*cking r*tard" and hang up, leaving you to spend more money to get it fixed correctly. read more

American Asphalt did a less than mediocre job and. Asked for 1/2 down, which was $300 and then charged the entire amount again after completion of the job which was another $600, overcharging me $300.At this point the company will not return my calls and is avoiding me. My credit card company is now investigating them. I am disappointed and feel violated! This company is not reputable please beware! I received quotes from 3 different companies for sealcoating services in the spring of 2020. I liked the AA package - it was detailed. The price was in the middle - neither here nor there at this point. Minimal notice from the company on when they would be coming out. They powerwashed and then I think 2 days later - plenty of time for debris to fall onto the driveway, they came out to do the service. First a truck comes to fill the cracks - this was sloppy - they didn't even fully cover the cracks. I get that it was early in the pandemic - I think they did not think I was home. One of the men was behind my garage peeing or doing who knows what, I wasn't about to go look. I get it - no where to go. But still. Not professional. I offered to open the garage to make it easier to get to the edge of the driveway. They thanked me and went on their way completing the work. Wow did they. They were absolutely sloppy. Sealcoating all over my siding and even lawn chairs on the grass. I called to complain about the siding. And the sealcoating on the house & door. Large spots of the driveway were still visible through the black. A paperthin layer of sealcoating. Minimal. At some point, the owner, Todd, had come to inspect. We later talked and he told me that my house was dirty. And that it needed to be powerwashed. Ok, Todd. Good thing I have a powerwasher to prove a point. I took a timestamped video of me powerwashing to show him that no, in fact it was sealcoating on my house. Also in that conversation, I told him that I could see through to the driveway. He was condescending and rude, essentially talking down to me. So I explained it very simply - I am painting a white wall to blue...I CAN STILL SEE WHITE. It didn't coat. Maybe a month or so later, still 2020, I then saw an American Asphalt truck on my street. Bidding work. I stopped to talk - it was Todd! Yes - finally something. He came down to my house. Told me that he would reseal the driveway. Great. I looked him dead in the eye and said - We should get this in writing. He said that he is the owner and he is giving me HIS WORD. At this point you'd think surely he resealed the driveway. Nope. I called probably two more times in 2020. I was told that they were low on staff and the trucks were broken. --Winter 2020-2021--- Spring of 2021. I think ok, I will call and try to touch base early in the season. I get brushed off numerous times - calling a total of 4 times in 2021. No more. Don't use this service. They are rude and have absolutely no customer service. Todd is not a man of his word. Had them seal coat our driveway last August for about $1000. Immediately after there were cracks and fissures which Todd said were normal. After this very mild winter it is much worse. Todd again says how great it looks and expects us to spend more money with his company to do it again. In the past Sealcoating would look great and last a few years. This was a horrible experience. He gave me a list of questions to ask other contractors so that I could compare apples to apples and make an informed decision. We were scheduled for mid September but after reviewing the weather and realizing there were four perfect weather days coming Todd asked if he could bump us up and start the project early. I should have read the pattern of complaints on Better Business Bureau and Angie's list and steered clear, but buyer beware. While the asphalt resealing business may not be a beacon of integrity in the business world, this establishment is guilty of false advertising, shoddy workmanship and a dig- in- their heels mentality if a problem arises. No. 1: False advertising. Their contract states that they will apply 2 "heavy coats" of sealcoating to the drive. In actuality, they spray the mix from a showerhead pipe type set up on a truck as they drive down your driveway once and then leave, done in under 2 minutes . If two actual coats were applied, as stipulated in the contract ,there would need to be drying time in between as I researched: According to Asphalt Pavement Solutions and Affordable Stripping and Sealing, LLC, the following principles are followed in resealing : Customers sometimes wonder why it is necessary to apply multiple coats rather than a single thick coat. It is the same principle that requires house painters to use multiple coats of paint to provide full coverage for problem areas or achieve a richer color. Thick layers cannot dry properly. Whether it is paint or asphalt sealer, moisture trapped beneath the top coat can undermine the effectiveness of the product. Each coat must be allowed to dry before another coat is applied, When I asked the company how two coats could have possibly been applied, they responded that there was "overlay". I can attest that no areas were repeated or overlapped, and from the above research, that is not how multiple coats are actually done. 2. Shoddy workmanship: In addition to the drive by sealcoat method, my work order included cleaning. As far as I can tell, the cleaning period consisted of placing wood stakes on either side of the apron with yellow ribbon to prevent driving on the surface before leaving. 3.When I complained and sent pictures , it was clear that they had an answer for everything, including the under 2 minutes time to complete the job-eg; the workman were so experienced they could complete a job that fast. To save the reader time, I will copy the heading from BBB on this business that I should have read : The BBB has received a pattern of complaints against this firm concerning dissatisfaction with the quality of work performed; some complaints concern a failure to return deposits; other complaints concern a failure to return phone calls. On February 4, 2014, the BBB contacted the company concerning this apparent complaint pattern and its failure to correct the underlying cause of these complaints. The company did not respond to the BBB. On Angie's list, the reviews run from a grade "C" to "F" with the majority of the reviews listing a grade "D". I hope this helps someone do their homework ( look on Angie's list) and find a reputable sealcoater in their neighborhood. I would strongly discourage anyone from this establishment. read more

We had them come out and quote our driveway. We received a quote for $5,914 to have our driveway hot. Patched steamrolled power wash crack seal driveway sealant and we paid $3,000 up front. They came did the hot patch and then they took an additional $3,000 so I called and told them I wanted my money back until the project was done and they informed me to have all the other stuff done. I had to pay an additional $3,000 even though the quote was 5,914 When I Called on this issue they told me that four other customers had just called concerning the same thing. But if we want the rest done we have to pay the additional $3,000. So please beware of this company. If you need an asphalt driveway done, call AWC out of Burton Ohio. Do not trust American asphalt. They do not do good work. Even their patches are not level. They're bumpy just run run and just find another company. Do not use them. Please spread the word read more

American Asphalt, it's owner, and all of it's employees have been nothing but fantastic. To start, I have spent well over $100,000 with them over the last 25 years on both my home and commercial properties. The work has always been top notch and if there was an issue( we are all human and make mistakes) it was always corrected. They have my complete trust. I have my residence serviced by them when I am out of town. I leave them complete access to my house and garage. My garage houses four very expensive automobiles ie Rolls Royce etc. Never a worry never an issue. How many people would you give complete access to your home to? I TRUST THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE EARNED MY TRUST FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS. I dealt with the owner of American Asphalt & Sealcoating, Todd Tornstrom, whom we purchased a new asphalt driveway from, and paying one third up front. On the scheduled day, I took off work to oversee the process. They never showed up and phone calls went unanswered. I finally received a call from Todd the following week, after bombarding his phone with messages. He acted disgruntled about the numerous messages and told me he was a busy man. His excuse was, they were backed up on work due to poor weather and he stated he tried to notify me, but I didn't answer, which was total BS, as I was home with my cell phone in hand all day, calling him, over, and over, and over. Work was rescheduled and they were to show up at 8:30am on the arranged day. When that day came, they finally showed up at 11:30am, and I suspect one of the crewmen was drunk, as he was swaying back and forth. I had to go to work for half a day, so left the crew there to do the job. When I returned home, my neighbor stopped by to report she witnessed two men urinating behind my house several times, although a service station was less than 500 feet from my home. But, that's not all; when she went to show me where they were relieving themselves, we found a fresh pile of human sh-t behind my garage! WTF??!! Also, when I got home, the drive was not complete. There was just the trough they dug where the drive was to be poured, so I had to call the city to arrange for parking on the street. They also left mud and clumps of grass all over my porch area that took me an hour to clean up. The following day, I spoke with Todd when the crew didn't show in the morning. He denied that his crew took a crap behind my house, and then stated, I would need to pay the balance before the drive was finished. I told him I wasn't comfortable paying the balance until the job was complete, but he said it wouldn't get finished until it was paid. So, unfortunately for me, I paid him the balance of $7000... It was arranged for them to come on a Friday to finish (a week later). I went to work with Todd's assurance, I'd come home to a driveway. By this time, I had been parking in a neighbor's drive and I just wanted my work done. When I came home, the driveway was done to the company's standards, or I should say, lack of standards, and I was extremely unhappy. There was at least a 2 foot strip of drive, all the way up the right side, abutting my neighbor's property that was missing! The trough they dug was there, where they prepped for the drive, but no drive. It was also on the approved plans, so I know what I was supposed to get; an 18 ft. drive, wide enough for 2 cars! Now, there's not enough room for another car to park and be able to open a car door! All calls to Todd Tornstrom have gone unanswered at this point. I will have to pursue legal action. Unfortunately, during this whole fiasco, I discovered the whole family has sham businesses around the Cleveland area, where they all work for one another. I'll be lucky to get anything back. Todd Tornstrom also operates under the guises of, American Asphalt, XYZ, LLC, and Pricom Asphalt Sealcoating, Inc, along with operating the Wash-Me Car Wash on Rt. 615 in Mentor, Ohio. UPDATE: As of this writing, Todd Tornstrom is currently in jail for kidnapping and assault, which the filing can be viewed on the Cuyahoga County government website, in the Clerk of Courts records section. Absolutely horrible customer service. They resurfaced my driveway in the fall of 2012 and it did not adhere so they held my money and did it again in the spring of 2013. awful company......they did sealcoating in sept, 2013. It has washed off, and the patches they did are so thick they are still smelly and soft. I cannot sit on my front porch. They got sealcoating on our house so we didn't have to pay the whole price. Now because the driveway patches still haven't hardened, we are trying to get our money back.
