I ordered the project Hail Mary drink special (orange creamsicle drink with aperol spritz) and it was delicious. I also ordered the cookies with ice cream. My friends ordered full dinner service and enjoyed their meal. This is such a nice theater that really nails the movie going experience. Highly recommend!

First of all, know going in that the tickets are more expensive than regular theatres. OK, fine,…read morebut you get more, right? Well, only sort of. You do get a waiter and you order from a menu. If you get there early it's a little less awkward since food is brought to your seat. In a darkened theatre with ottomans and little tables filling up the aisle, it's quite disruptive to order or receive food during the film, so see something that you don't really care about missing lines of dialogue. You'd think someone would have thought of this when designing this place. Maybe have an aisle for wait staff behind the seats so the waiter can get in and out more easily with less disruption to other patrons? Secondly, food is average and overpriced. I ordered a 3-item snack tray ($19) which included an artisan cheese plate, 3 deviled eggs and flatbread. The cheese was not "artisan" in any way, shape or form, the flatbread was limp, and the deviled eggs were ok. My husband and I also split a large popcorn ($15). A 10-oz glass of wine was also $15. Regarding the seats and movie experience itself, the seats are different depending upon what seat numbers you choose, but you can't really know that until you enter the theatre and see them. It would be helpful if seating styles were better explained on the website at the time of ordering. Lastly, the house lights and some bright screens on the side wall were lit up before the credits rolled, making the credits impossible to read. As movie lovers, we always stay for and read the credits, and they are a part of the film. Leave the lights and screens OFF until the movie is done! Needless to say, we won't be back again, and we didn't find this movie going experience to be 'special' at all; more like awkward and uncomfortable. If that's what you're into, you'll love it!

I'm still in shock... I go to movies here a lot. I am not a fan of seeing films that are crowded…read more It's rare that I see films during the day, preferring later shows. Normally I scan my movie pass, tell them seat me in the ADA row. Usually it is empty so I just say put me in the middle but due to the wheelchair on the seat, I can never read the numbers which I say. I was supposed to be at an event across town. It was impossible to find a safe place to park and there was no ADA parking. Due to safety, I had to give up. I figured I would just go to see The Drama instead. I was not prepared... There are a few seats taken, including the two middle seats in ADA. I looked and said to give me on of the ADA seats over to the side. She stood there staring at me before saying that those seats are reserved for companions for people who are in a wheelchair. I said those are for people who have a disability and are not able to walk up or down stairs to get to the other seats. I genuinely picked up my cane and showed it to her saying I'm not sure how much more disabled you would like me to be to get a disabled seat. She had to call over her manager, thankfully not at my request. The manager without saying a word punched in my ticket and got my popcorn looking at the other person with shock. I have known numerous people going through things like organ failure, recently received a transplant... cancer treatments... there are so many things that can be severely wrong with a person where they are challenged physically and need ADA seating or accommodations. So, I don't assume BUT I just had to put up a fight to get accommodations yet I was SHOOK seeing the very able bodied, looking couple sitting in the center of the ADA section. I was so tempted to ask if anyone gave them any crap getting those seats. I did not though because it's hardly their fault I had to go through that. I also didn't wanna disrupt them because they were super cute snuggled up together. I always assume people sitting ADA requested it for reasons - I'm not the ADA police and there were plenty of spaces.

A True Local Gem Worth Supporting!…read more In my quest to support local small businesses, I've driven past Joy Cinema many times while heading down 99W toward Tigard -- always thinking, "I really need to stop in one of these days." Fast forward to the 40th anniversary showing of Back to the Future, and I finally did it! Sure, I could have gone to one of the big movie chains nearby, but I wanted to support a locally owned theater -- and I'm so glad I did. While Joy Cinema doesn't have its own parking lot, there's plenty of parking in the shopping center just behind it. The lobby is small but welcoming, and you'll likely be greeted by the owner himself -- who runs everything from ticket sales to concessions to the movie projector. It truly feels like a one-man show, and that personal touch makes the experience so special. Plus, the prices for both tickets and snacks are refreshingly affordable compared to the big chains. The theater itself has one large screening room, and it's impressive -- spacious, comfy seats, great surround sound, and a large screen that makes for a perfect movie experience. They don't drown you in endless previews, just a couple quick ones before the feature starts. I also appreciate some of the fun movie history and facts they presented prior to the screening. I also appreciated that they have clearly marked spots for wheelchairs in prime viewing areas -- a thoughtful touch that shows care for accessibility. Unfortunately, one rude family arrived late, talking loudly and even letting their kids run around, which disrupted the movie for a bit. The owner handled it as best as anyone could -- even stepping in multiple times to address the situation. It's tough when guests behave poorly, but I really admired how he tried to keep things under control while protecting his business. After the show, the owner greeted us again and asked how we enjoyed the movie -- that kind of personal connection is rare these days. I'll absolutely be back to Joy Cinema. It's a local treasure run by someone who truly cares about movies and the community. If you're in the area and want to enjoy a film while supporting a small business, skip the big chains and check this place out!

Beyond that, the programming here is pretty decent with Saturday morning "classics" where they span a decade of cinema showing one each week inclusive of a brief introduction prior to the movie. I love that personal touch. They show a lot of arthouse style offerings and also some of the newer big blockbuster movies. The interior is much bigger than the outside would suggest. I believe there are a total of 3 screens, the #1 movie screen being the largest of the 3. There is a balcony level to screen #1 that still has some of the original seating (ok maybe not original) if you're into that sorta thing. All seats are comfortable and while they don't recline fully they do recline a bit with a rocking motion for comfort. Great little concession stand where you can find typical theater offerings (popcorn, soda, candy) and a nice selection of draft beer and wines also. They do get pizza directly from Escape From NY (on 23rd Ave.) so if you get hungry and need something bigger they have you covered.
