A True Local Gem Worth Supporting! In my quest to support local small businesses, I've driven past Joy Cinema many times while heading down 99W toward Tigard -- always thinking, "I really need to stop in one of these days." Fast forward to the 40th anniversary showing of Back to the Future, and I finally did it! Sure, I could have gone to one of the big movie chains nearby, but I wanted to support a locally owned theater -- and I'm so glad I did. While Joy Cinema doesn't have its own parking lot, there's plenty of parking in the shopping center just behind it. The lobby is small but welcoming, and you'll likely be greeted by the owner himself -- who runs everything from ticket sales to concessions to the movie projector. It truly feels like a one-man show, and that personal touch makes the experience so special. Plus, the prices for both tickets and snacks are refreshingly affordable compared to the big chains. The theater itself has one large screening room, and it's impressive -- spacious, comfy seats, great surround sound, and a large screen that makes for a perfect movie experience. They don't drown you in endless previews, just a couple quick ones before the feature starts. I also appreciate some of the fun movie history and facts they presented prior to the screening. I also appreciated that they have clearly marked spots for wheelchairs in prime viewing areas -- a thoughtful touch that shows care for accessibility. Unfortunately, one rude family arrived late, talking loudly and even letting their kids run around, which disrupted the movie for a bit. The owner handled it as best as anyone could -- even stepping in multiple times to address the situation. It's tough when guests behave poorly, but I really admired how he tried to keep things under control while protecting his business. After the show, the owner greeted us again and asked how we enjoyed the movie -- that kind of personal connection is rare these days. I'll absolutely be back to Joy Cinema. It's a local treasure run by someone who truly cares about movies and the community. This is a fun little theater! Saw Dune 2 with the girlfriend for a great price on the tickets. Snacks are not outrageously over priced like other movie theaters and we loaded up! We had popcorn, pizza and a drink, plus the tickets for about the same price as just the tickets at one of the major theaters in the area. On our way out the lady behind the counter asked us if we wanted the leftover pizza that they were going to throw out anyways. That was a kind gesture and very much appreciated. read more

I viewed Creed III here last night and had an awesome experience! This is a very nicely run older independent theater that shows a mix of first run films along with older fare. They do theme nights and like to play up the cult aspect, and around Halloween they do horror film festivals. Reminds me a lot of what the Hollywood Theatre in Portland was like circa 2011 when I first started going there (and now is super packed at almost every screening.) The service was awesome and the gentleman that helped was friendly and accommodating. Prices were perfect- $7 for a matinee ticket, under $5 for popcorn and soda each, $3 for candy. There is also beer and wine that is reasonably priced too, with a good selection of local breweries and wineries. Pizza, nachos and hot dogs are also available and again, very affordable. The lobby is super cute with posters, vintage furniture and interesting carpeting. Auditorium was clean, well appointed and the sound/projection quality was perfect. Not too loud, not tinny, and no light coming from the lobby (I've removed points from other theaters for not being light tight, which is incredibly distracting.) Restrooms were immaculately clean. After coming here, I see little reason to go to Regal or AMC unless the Joy isn't carrying a particular film I want to see. read more

Can I just say how much I love this place? We've only seen a handful of movies here, but we will be going more often. The prices are great, and we don't feel like we're breaking the bank just to see a movie. Also, Mondays are only $3! That's crazy! Everybody is super nice and friendly. They treat you like a friend rather than just another customer. Their snack prices aren't ridiculously expensive either. I love that theater is in town. If you're a patient person and don't need to see something the minute it comes out, then see it at Joy. It's a great place. It's clean. It's friendly. And shows great films. Also, as we were walking out the other night, they gave us an entire pizza to take home. My boys were so thrilled to be given that, and they definitely made my boys smile. Thank you! I like this little theater. I was driving by a few weeks ago and see a sign advertising "Some Like It Hot". Little known fact about me, that happens to be my favorite movie... Like, ever. So , since everyone seems to be flaky these days I went by myself. I had such a great time! Oh wait, I had such a great time for $13.... Movie, popcorn... Delicious popcorn!!!!! And a soda. Sounds like a great time for me... Especially considering That I just bought a smaller popcorn and a soda for over $11 yesterday at another theater. I get it, they don't play first run... New owners! My fiance and I spent Friday and Saturday night here watching movies when it's "21 and over". This place is awesome, from the brand new projector (seemingly brand new, it's crystal clear) and new screen maybe, to the pizza, beer and awesome popcorn. (I saw a grossly inaccurate review about their popcorn being like microwave, please don't post lies on here, it does everyone a disservice). The popcorn machine makes amazing-tasting popcorn and their adult beverage selection (which eventually may expand I'm guessing) is ice cold and fresh. The theater is extremely clean and the staff are super friendly (Jeff and a woman whose name I cannot remember). $4/person and $1/person on Monday nights. I haven't had the pizza just yet, but I intend to soon. Great place. read more

One could say I'm slow. Like molasses like riders on a small buses like the way you read a haiku like dial up when it came to this local cinema. I went here some 30 years ago. That's right, 3 whole decades it took for me to return here even though I actually enjoyed the place back in whatever the hell decade it was. I was underage and they served me beer in clear plastic cups so of course I loved it. Fast forward to 2014. When my husband and I decided to catch Anchorman II (no longer playing elsewhere) we were kinda excited about going. Prices are low, new owner was working the counter, help was friendly and they actually had some beer and popcorn. Now, I'm not saying the beer was from 30 years ago because I didn't have any, but the popcorn might have been :(. However, the candy prices were super reasonable (2-3 bucks) and the pizza looked pizza-ish - on that side it was a good value. BUTT, there's times value isn't everything! That misspelling wasn't accidental like all my other ones since it was my actual butt that totally did NOT appreciate the beyond worn seats. That really took away from the experience for me. They serve beer, energy drinks, pizza and a slew of candy as well as the usual popcorn. The decor is as great as that retro 50's car parked out front, animal print and B-movie posters? count me in! They play second-run movies for around $4, they are starting to bring in some cult classics (recently watched "American Werewolf in London") and there's been some talk of future 3D showings of classics. The charm is there, it's a classic picture show theater with wonderful accommodations. I highly recommend a visit. read more

This theater has great prices. If you are there for a 3D movie, it's only $1 more than the 2D version. Other theaters are usually $3-$5 extra. The food and drink prices are pretty good too and I like that you can have a draft beer while you watch the movie. On Wednesday nights they show throwback monster movies for free, you just have to be over 21. They do that so you will come and drink beer while watching the movie. I figure, if I gotta drink beer to watch a free movie, then I am willing to make the sacrifice. These people are really nice and I have tried to watch my movies there so I can support their business. Don't be deceived by the looks outside. This theater is a lot larger than it looks. I would guesstimate that it holds 300-400. If you see a line waiting to get in, don't worry there will be seats. The line is probably just because the ticket counter is right inside the door so there's not a lot of room for a line inside. read more

This is my favorite theatre in Portland. It's a second run, prices are great, owners are great, bathrooms are clean and super neat with old movie posters on the wall. Concession prices are good as well. The seats are comfortable and while the theatre is old it isn't divey or dirty. I would highly recommend this place. I come here all the time and am never disappointed. It really is a diamond in the rough. They also play a lot of old favorite movies which I love! Hoping they will play Labyrinth this summer. Sometimes the movie starts a few minutes late if they have people in line because it moves a little slow at concessions (to be expected at a small locally run theater) but I actually appreciate the fact they wait a minute to start the movie if you are waiting in a queue. If you have wanted to try this place you should, you won't be disappointed. read more

I almost feel bad that I didn't sign up for Yelp sooner, because until recently, I would have given this cinema a great review. In a world of giant, overpriced cineplexes, the Joy Cinema was always my family's go-to for locally owned and affordable entertainment. That all changed recently. For the past two years, I've routinely come in with my family and conversed with a pleasant woman, who identified herself as the owner, while buying tickets, beer, candy, pizza, and popcorn. We order so much that this kind owner has always helped us carry it in to our seats. And every time, I've carried the same purse. Well, that purse recently attracted some unwanted attention. The owner that I know was not present, but a man behind the counter demanded to search my purse to make sure that I wasn't bringing in my own candy. Note that this occurred BEFORE I even had a chance to place our usual giant, revenue-generating order of concessions. The only reason why I reluctantly opened my purse - which contained only my wallet, phone, and I book I was reading -- was because my children had been looking forward all day to seeing the movie. Then he belligerently informed me that he hadn't "seen enough." This is the *only* time in my life I've ever undergone a search of my personal belongings at a movie theater. We ended up leaving and taking our business elsewhere and, after such a degrading experience that felt more like an airport TSA line than a fun night on the town, we will sadly no longer support this local business. read more

This place is amazing. It's locally owned and Jeff the owner is always there. They show it all. If you want to see a B movie from the 60's they have it. A new movie in 3D- wait a few weeks and it's there. The price is inexpensive (popcorn, a slice of pizza and a drink with admission $16-$18). Buy local and have a blast. read more

This is not AMC or a giant theater. It is cute and quaint and shows one movie at a time. This means you wait in the lobby until the prior movie is over. It is a fun things to do with kids, especially if they have a Monday off of school and it is a rainy Portland day. The movies are $1 and not that old. If you like them on facebook, they will send an updated schedule out each week. It's a different kind of set up.. You wait in the lobby, then everyone is let in. I'm definitely in like with this place rounding the corner to love. Not that I don't love Bollywood as much as the next person, but I was so stoked when this venue switched back from all Bollywood all the time to a second-run theater. For a third of the price of Cinetopia and a much more personalized and alcohol friendly venue than Regal, you can catch second-run flicks and the occasional one-off like their recent showing of Max Max. Seriously, it's cheap. Really cheap. Super cheap. $1 on Mondays. $4 regularly. There's nearly always some sort of deal going on, like their $2 pizza slice Wednesdays. I love showing up and grabbing a beer from the super friendly folks working there and parking it in the comfy seats with classic movie trailers to entertain until the movie starts. Beer selection is mainly PBR, Widmer and Ninkasi. That's truly my biggest complaint. Throw another local beer or two in and I may never leave. Oh and what's that I hear in the background? That's right... Nothing.. I adore that they don't let kids in after 6 being a theater pub and all. I love kids, but there's definitely a time and a place and I definitely enjoy my movie more without the soundtrack of screaming baby. Now if you do want the best sound experience possible for this older theater, sit closer to the front. Going out to the movies in the 'burbs can be affordable! Now just get me some better beer offerings and I know it will be true love! read more

This place is pretty great for a cheap recent run movie and BEER. Tickets are $4 (or $5 for 3D) and Mondays are even more of a swingin' deal at $1 (or $2 for 3D). Regal can't compete with that, and Cinetopia isn't even in the ballpark for those prices. Did I mention beer? Oh hey you can buy beer, either a micro or one of those others "beers" (I'm looking at you Bud Light). There's also the typical popcorn/candy. All are reasonably priced just like the tickets. The screen itself is much better than other second run theatres, as is the sound system. Overall makes for a well priced, delightful experience. Also - the owners are super, super nice. I love going to movies and events at Joy Cinema. It has such a good vibe, with a friendly staff, fun movie posters and decorations all over the walls, and a cozy theater with plenty of seating. I appreciate the low prices for second run films, and enjoy the events, and showings of older and classic films. "Weird Wednesday", their weekly free showing of older, bonkers films and b-movie gems, is a great way to get involved with the weird side of Tigard. read more

Local, small, and shows second-run movies. The owners are often there to greet you coming in, and after two or three times, they were calling me by name and welcoming me back. Most friendly theater I have EVER been in, and has been my favorite theater for a long while now. "Weird Wednesday" has also been a favorite event that I hope they get back into soon. One of the "Weird Wednesday" events was a low-budget modern giant-spider movie (called "The Giant Spider") and it was introduced by one of the executive producers, and they had copies of the movie you could buy right there if you wanted. Discovered the Joy Cinema and Pub after seeing a Yelp friend's review for them pop up on my feed, and I gotta say I'm glad to have discovered it. This place isn't the prettiest by any means, but it's got moxy. The classic movie posters around the lobby and the retro commercials that run before your movie start just really set the mood. This place is owned by people who love cinema and want to share it with us. With the installation of a new screen at the theater, you really can't beat the chance to see a 3D film for $5. Then take into consideration that they serve pizza and beer in the lobby before showtime, and have nightly specials on snacks and $2 showings on Mondays, and there is no reason not to like the Joy. I only have two gripes: the seats are the most uncomfortable torture devices I've ever had the displeasure of sitting in. I have to slouch throughout the whole movie to remain seated and it is really not my preferred position. It's good I've been walking around with a cane because I need one to help me out of the seats. Second gripe: no movie theater butter for my movie theater popcorn. I'm a butter popcorn junky, so that is a bit of a letdown for me. I hope that the installation of their new screen system means that more improvements (ahem, new seats) are to come. I quite fancy this place! No, this theater isn't perfect. The concessions service isn't flawless like Laurelhurst, but this is a great place to catch a flick. $4 regular ticket price. $5 for 3-D movies. Mondays are super cheap with tickets for $1 and $2. They have a great selection of candy, popcorn, drinks (including beer & wine), nachos, and pizza (only in the evenings I guess). I was once treated to pizza bread from neighboring Armando's which was devine. There is one theater only, but they rotate their shows throughout the day so they usually play 3 different movies per weekend day and 2 different movies on weeknights. It's family run and they are super friendly and make you feel good about supporting them. The theater is quite large and tends to be cold. The seats are only OK and a number of them are blocked off because they are in disprepair. They could really use some tables and I bet they'll be do that when they can. Be patient when you go. They don't seem to have the concessions system up to maximum efficiency, so you will wait in line. And they don't start the movie if there is a big line in the lobby, so you will likely wait for the movie to start as well. But man are they trying and their hearts are truly in it, so I always feel good about cutting them some slack in this area. read more

Came to know recently that this particular theater screens Hindi movies (with English subtitles) every weekend. Now, any theater willing to do that will have my loyal following. I'd be willing to pay $8, imagine the seats are as comfy as in a Century or a Regal, pretend not to see the M&M's lying around, just to get my fix of Hindi movies on a big screen. There were just 2 parties (including us) watching a movie last weekend. Not sure if this is because people are not aware of the shows or they generally stay away from this theater. But then I am not complaining, we got our own private show (well, almost) and it turned out to be a laugh riot. The movies change often enough. Check their website for current info. It helps to carry cash. There is an ATM located inside but I am generally wary of those machines. read more
