We've been here twice; once with kids and the other time just as adults. For the second visit, we were the only ones on the tour. The guides to a great job of adapting to who's on the tour. With the tour where we brought the kids, there was a bigger focus on feeding the young elk, and spending time in the petting zoo. With the tour where it was just us 2 adults, we got a history of the place and detail about stories of the elk. The tour takes about 45 minutes - you're in a wagon pulled by a tractor with 2 guides. read more

The Amber Elk Ranch was an incredible experience. The ranch offers a wagon tour. I called ahead to reserve seats to ensure a spot. It's a good thing I did as my group had a several hour wait time. Instead of having to wonder around the ranch for hours, we instead could utilize that time to explore Ludington beach. At the ranch, there was a free petting zoo for the children. The petting zoo was small with donkeys and goats. It was just enough to keep the children busy for several minutes. The petting zoo is more suitable for older children (6-7+) as the animals are not very small and cuddly. During the wagon tour, the staff did their best to accommodate their guests during the COVID-19 pandemic by requiring masks and sectioning off rows on the wagon with clear plastic sheeting. Also, groups needed to stay within their assigned rows. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable in the elk and it was informative for both children and adults. It was incredibly fun to feed the elk cows and bulls. After the wagon tour, we ordered BBQ that's offered on Saturdays. The menu and prices are posted in the gift shop. The Elk burger was seriously fantastic and we did not regret eating here. Also, the baked beans is a must try. It's "cowboy" beans made from scratch and it's fantastic. All in all, this an excellent activity and a must-do when visiting Ludington. read more

We stopped here after reading reviews and looking at the website. I really didn't expect to be able to hand feed the elk off the wagon. It was really cool to have the elk walk right up and start eating out of your hand. The staff is informative and answers all questions. I was really impressed by the staff member who runs around opening and closing gates for the tour. You don't realize the sheer size of these animals and their antlers. If you are in the area, stop by and take the tour! You will be glad you did. read more

We came to ranch today to check out the petting zoo area. There was a large male goat who was obviously irritated. We told our kids to stay clear of him. Unfortunately our three year old got too close and the goat charged him and knocked him to the ground. Luckily a couple of the ranch workers were walking through the petting area and redirected the goat. However I feel like they should have someone in the petting area to keep the cranky goats in check. The baby deer was the sweetest and licked our hands. But that dang goat was a real jerk. Go at your own risk. And we didn't have any of the BBQ they we're cooking but it smelled amazing. read more

This ranch, just south of Ludington, is home to a large herd of elk. Visitors can take a farm tour and buy elk meat and other products at the farm store. It's a great non- beach option for families with kids visiting this Lake Michigan community, as well as a destination for foodies interested in a healthy lean game meat. You' ll also get the added benefit of driving through some really lovely countryside and seeing the great agricultural diversity of the area.
