Options for à la carte, 3-course set, or chef's tasting menu (4 courses at €50). We were a table of 3 and chose the tasting menu. The complimentary amuse-bouche was a creamy asparagus soup. A little too rich in the cream but still bright flavors coming through. Foie ravioli: super savory and not as heavy as it sounds. Mmmmmmmm Langoustines with stuffed squash blossom and crusted polenta: deliciousness. The langoustines were sweet and fresh. The squash blossom was very satisfying in itself. All the elements complimented each other very well. Beef medallions with asparagus, quail egg, fried sweet potatoes and an explosive fried scallion cheeseball. Simple but still lots going on. And still delicious. Dessert: I had a rhubarb crusty whippy tart number which was good, although lot of tartness and sour so might not be for everyone. I liked more my friend's panna cotta. Creamy and not too sweet. AND the kitchen was able to make substitutes and accommodations for my Friend who is Celiac. Service was impeccable. There are about 10 tables inside and we were lucky enough to sit right next to the kitchen and speak with the owner & chef Bazin Fabrice. You can see that Bazin truly loves food, the hard work and dedication shows in his dishes! Bazin has had many years of culinary study, including time spent at a 2 star rated michelin restaurant! The menu is limited with 2 options for starters (crispy cheese or blue cheese) & 2 options for entrees (fish or pork chop) & 2 desserts (chocolate mousse or apple crisp). We ordered the crispy cheese + both entrees + chocolate mousse and it was all PHENOMENAL. If anyone ever has a chance to visit Marseille, DO NOT miss this hole in the wall - so yummy and truly French!

I guess it helps that the number of seats and different options on the menu are limited. We went here for lunch on a Saturday and just managed to get the last available table just after 1pm. So it's definitely a popular place, which I really do get. The food and wine is good, service friendly and the atmosphere very down-to-earth. I do however not think that the food is extraordinary. Don't get me wrong. Our starter; a fish rilette and salad, and our main; fish, polenta and peas, were all good and prepared well. It was just not more than a nice lunch.

We had one of the best dinners on our trip in the south of France last month at this restaurant!…read moreActually, it might have been one of the best dinners I have ever had, and I am from Southern California. That's why I am quite surprised to see that the restaurant does not have a higher rating on Yelp, and so although I never leave reviews, here I am. L'Incontournable came highly recommended by our hotel and they got the reservation for us; seating is limited so a reservation is highly recommended. The restaurant mainly has outside seating, it was situated in a courtyard with a fountain in the middle so this was wonderful on a warm summer night. To start off, my husband and I ordered an appetizer to share, it was a Bouillabaisse style soup but with vegetable and shrimp. We each had one taste and decided it was so good we didn't want to share so we ordered another one. The entrée was no less special. I got the quail and my husband got the beef tataki, and both were delicious. I never even knew quail could taste that good! We also got dessert and tea to end the night. Service was excellent, and their bathroom is also very clean and stylish. I would not be surprised if this restaurant gets some kind of Michelin recognition one day, I hope they do.

You have to read some of the reviews and see for yourself what the talk is about. We walked over and without reservation, scored a seat in the patio. Our 3 course meal was 20 euro but it none of the dishes were memorable. The dishes had a home cooked feeling, as if you could make the dishes at home, but nothing tasted out of this world. My bf got the short ribs and I got the baby chicken. Neither dishes were that great. Dessert was probably the best part of the meal. I probably would not return. For those who do not know the language: Owner speaks English. Waitresses know little English.

Not sure what "SCI Charlotte" refers to. This restaurant is called, variously,…read moreResto Charlotte, Chez Charlotte, or Restaurant Charlotte, at least online, as far as I can tell. On the other hand, there's no actual sign or label at the unassuming entrance on rue des Bernardines -- which could generously be called a side street but almost borders on an alley. This is NOT your typical restaurant in touristy Aix-en-provence. We sought it out because a website described it as the sort of place that the Aixoise would go. Well, that may be, and I certainly would not blame them, but there were plenty of tourists there when we dined on a weekday. (They basically open at 8pm, a more French dining time, while most establishments in the city accommodate touristic tastes and open as early as 7. In fact, our rather entertaining waiter seemed to speak French, English, and German fluently (to hear him banter with nearby tables) -- although he couldn't manage Mandarin. How to describe the food? "Unpretentious" would be accurate but maybe slightly misleading. It is a fantastic deal for a full meal compared to most sit-down restaurants in Aix. Expect well-executed, classic but un-fussy French cuisine in a pleasant outdoor courtyard. The vibe is fun, even on a less crowded evening. The two of us had the summer special gazpacho (amazing, and quite spicy) and the chicken liver pate (also very good) for entrees. Our main courses were a steak and a fillet of veal, both served with french-fry-like hash browns and haricot verts. A plum clafoutis and a nicely caramelly tarte tatin rounded out this meal -- very traditional bistro fare. (Both desserts were tasty, without being mind blowingly good or especially original.) At 40 Euros (tax + tip included, of course) for two people, including one glass of house red and one coffee, I think Chez Charlotte's menu might be the best deal in Aix.

The Rue du Prado isn't exactly Chicago's Miracle Mile or even the Elysee of Paris, but it's still quite clean, easy to traverse as one of Marseille's major thoroughfares and chock full of charming restaurants, bistros, restobars and shopping. The street is 3 lanes in each direction but on each side of the street between the first and 2/3 lanes is a promenade where outdoor seating is provided for restaurants that are just open across the first street (which appears to get ever so tangled up in delivery, taxi and lost tourist services but also just as quickly untangles and speeds along). Some of the outdoor dining is as al fresco as it gets, which may include a little car exhaust in your meal; many of the restaurants, however, have divided up their territory with quaint plastic tents that provide either heating or air conditioning, as the weather may be, and also respite from both rain and pollution. I was drawn to Le Patio because of their choices of unique yummy looking pizzas - and pizza is big in southern France with their Italian cousins just over the border and just as many similar toppings (cheese, tomatoes, olives, what more do you need?). I opted for a small personal pie (that was still so abundant I couldn't finish it) that had a beautiful almost burnt crunchy crust, some succulent French sausage, light Emmenteler cheese and my personal favorite if fresh (and they were); anchovies! Little briny beauties of the Mediterranean made this an oh la la sensation with every bite. With a casual pitcher of the ubiquitous rose wine from the Bandol region of the south of France, I was in heaven - and the people watching was just as delicious!
