Hummm, I think Yelp failed us with this recommendation but Trip Advisor has the most honest reviews. We decided to try it out anyway. You can't go off "stars" alone. You have to read some of the reviews and see for yourself what the talk is about. We walked over and without reservation, scored a seat in the patio. Our 3 course meal was 20 euro but it none of the dishes were memorable. The dishes had a home cooked feeling, as if you could make the dishes at home, but nothing tasted out of this world. My bf got the short ribs and I got the baby chicken. Neither dishes were that great. Dessert was probably the best part of the meal. I probably would not return. Chez Charlotte - Menu 07/14 - French Near Me - Aix En Provence, 13

Not sure what "SCI Charlotte" refers to. This restaurant is called, variously, Resto Charlotte, Chez Charlotte, or Restaurant Charlotte, at least online, as far as I can tell. On the other hand, there's no actual sign or label at the unassuming entrance on rue des Bernardines -- which could generously be called a side street but almost borders on an alley. This is NOT your typical restaurant in touristy Aix-en-provence. We sought it out because a website described it as the sort of place that the Aixoise would go. Well, that may be, and I certainly would not blame them, but there were plenty of tourists there when we dined on a weekday. (They basically open at 8pm, a more French dining time, while most establishments in the city accommodate touristic tastes and open as early as 7. In fact, our rather entertaining waiter seemed to speak French, English, and German fluently (to hear him banter with nearby tables) -- although he couldn't manage Mandarin. How to describe the food? "Unpretentious" would be accurate but maybe slightly misleading. It is a fantastic deal for a full meal compared to most sit-down restaurants in Aix. Expect well-executed, classic but un-fussy French cuisine in a pleasant outdoor courtyard. The vibe is fun, even on a less crowded evening. The two of us had the summer special gazpacho (amazing, and quite spicy) and the chicken liver pate (also very good) for entrees. Our main courses were a steak and a fillet of veal, both served with french-fry-like hash browns and haricot verts. A plum clafoutis and a nicely caramelly tarte tatin rounded out this meal -- very traditional bistro fare. (Both desserts were tasty, without being mind blowingly good or especially original.) At 40 Euros (tax + tip included, of course) for two people, including one glass of house red and one coffee, I think Chez Charlotte's menu might be the best deal in Aix. read more

We went here on the recommendation of Trip Advisor and was really pleased. It is right in the center of town and an easy walk. Our hotel the Renaissance also had it on their list of restaurants they recommended. The menu is 20 euros and you them choose from an appetizer, entrée and dessert. I had pate, "baby" chicken (looked like a small hen rather than baby) and creme bulee. All my choices came from asking the owner what he recommended. All very tasty. Also had two bottles of wine, our total bill coming to about 85 euros. The owner was very friendly and we sat in the courtyard area, very nice! The menu has family photos in it which was a nice touch. Other patrons were friendly as well. There is also inside seating with cool french movie decor. read more

Chez Charlotte is inexpensive and in previous years it was quite good. Now, unless you don't mind sitting at your table for at least 20-30 minutes before ordering, I do not recommend it. Everyone shows up at 8 when they open so it is too much for the minuscule staff to handle. The food isn't worth the wait. Disappointing!!! read more

We were recommended by our Airb&b owner. When we found the restaurant we thought it was closed but the lights were on and we saw movement in the empty dining room. Then we discovered the action is in the garden. A beautiful and magical setting. Other than having to wait over an hour to finally get seated. We were treated well. We started with inexpensive delicious house wines and appetizers of vegetable terrine and gazpacho soup. We ordered the daily special of veal stuffed with pork. Mouth watering mashed potatoes. Delicious comfort food. For desert: outstanding chocolate cake/pie with a rich flavor and nice texture and a sad slice of apple tartan (a bit burnt and flavorless). We were seated near the open windows into the kitchen which was fun to watch the action. read more

For the record, I'm 99.9% sure it's Restaurant Charlotte. That's what my receipt says. It also says 120.00 euros for 6 people including everything. Why we just went here just once, I'm not sure. I love this humble little place - it was recommended to me by the AirBnB host I had last year, and I liked it so much I returned this year. This is simple, cheap, tasty local food, without pretension, but with a cozy little garden in the back (don't sit anywhere else), replete with hanging colored lights and trees that have somehow been trained into a little canopy above our heads. Formules (prix fixes) are the way of the restaurant, and for a fair price you can have a lovely evening. I skipped an appetizer and had a mignon de porc dish with crunchy potatoes "fait maison"and some warm eggplant. A rosé started things off for me (it came with ice cubes, which gleefully stunned this wine snob) and then a cool (temperature and attitude too, I guess) red that arrived in its own .25L glass bottle. For dessert was a delicious chocolate mousse that the waitress told me she had just made an hour before and apologized that it wasn't quite the right texture yet. And contrary to another review here, I overheard my waitress speaking English quite well. While it was crickets just before 8pm, within a half hour there was a full garden of people indulged in quiet but animated conversation. The meal was good, not anything special but tasty. However, the waitress was very rude. When she came to take the entrée away, I ordered the chicken liver pâté, she commented on how little of it I had eaten (about a fourth of a fairly large slab). It wasn't good enough to make me want to eat the whole thing before the main course at all, and that was out of line. The waitress's bad attitude put a damper on the rest of my lunch, which would have been enjoyable besides the service. read more

We specifically asked at our hotel for a good, small, local restaurant, and Chez Charlotte was one of the two he quickly recommended. We went by during the hours it was closed, and weren't sure they were still in business. The location was down a narrow empty street with no evidence of activity of any kind. We actually walked past without seeing it since the doors and windows were all shut and signage was very minimal. Noticing that they didn't open until 8pm, we made plans to return later that evening. On returning, the small entrance was brightly lit and inviting. Arriving at 8pm, it was just my wife and I, followed soon after by a party of three who obviously knew the owner and staff. But within ten minutes the place filled with diners all of whom also seemed to know everyone else. The meal was outstanding. We each had the plat du jour, roast pork with leeks and potatoes, all wonderfully seasoned, hot, and delicious. The house wine we had was local and tasty, and the deserts, delectable. The staff was courteous and prompt. We likely would have never have found this little gem on our own, and even then may not have waited so late to eat were it not for the advice of our hotel staff.
