I've been working with Irene for a year and a half and I can't say enough good things about her. I knew nothing about lifting weights when I started and, with her guidance, I now feel very comfortable in any gym I walk into. She does a wonderful meal plan for you and keeps in touch on your off days! My body was transformed in the first 3 months and I just keep coming back for more. Irene is knowledgeable, motivating and kind. Just the right combination to keep me learning and growing. The gym itself is always clean and not too busy. All of the trainers here are great and once they know you will look after you. Great equipment and all around an awesome place to workout! read more

I cannot recommend Irene enough as a personal trainer. If you are looking for a kind, motivating, and incredibly effective 1-on-1 personal trainer at Self Made Training Gym, she is truly the best. Irene is super sweet, patient, and encouraging, but she also knows exactly how to gently push you past your comfort zone in a way that feels supportive, not overwhelming. Every session is tailored to me personally, and I always leave feeling stronger, more capable, and more confident than when I walked in. What really sets Irene apart is that she's not just focused on workouts, she's focused on your progress, your confidence, and your long-term results. She explains everything clearly, pays close attention to form, and adjusts exercises so they feel challenging but doable. Because of her, I've already noticed real improvements in my strength, energy, and overall fitness, and I actually look forward to my workouts now. Especially because all the other people and trainers there are also so welcoming and encouraging, too. A little fist bump or "you're killing it" during your session helps get you to push a little more. If you're someone who feels intimidated by the gym or unsure where to start, Irene is the perfect personal trainer for beginners and for anyone wanting to build strength, confidence, and consistency. Training at Self Made Training Gym with her has been an amazing experience, and I'm so grateful I found her. If you're searching for a personal trainer who is supportive, motivating, knowledgeable, and truly cares about your progress, book a session with Irene. You won't regret it. read more

I've been going to self made for a little over a year and I have really loved the environment there. There aren't any creepy people staring or anyone awkwardly trying to talk to you. Everyone is there to workout and really interested in the same goal. It's very welcoming. All the trainers are really great, but I especially love mine, Irene. She's so sweet and caring and she really pushes me to my limit, which is what I need in a trainer! We've been working together for a while now and I look forward to my sessions with Irene because I know I will get a great workout. She helps me stay focused when I want to stay focused as a trainer, but she's also a great friend. 10/10 recommend self made, but 20/10 recommend Irene. read more

I've been coming to this gym since Oct 2025 and can't recommend enough. Most of the trainers greet me by name, the place is super organized/clean and the equipment is in great condition. The clientele is as friendly too which is nice, you can feel like yourself no matter what size you are. Irene is the best trainer! Always kind, motivated and patient. She listens to me and pays attention to my body so she knows what days I need more of a push vs slowing down. She helps me achieve my goals and can't recommend her enough! read more

I have to share how much I love Self Made Training Facility in Costa Mesa! From the moment I stepped in, I loved it. The space is perfect, with all the machines you could want and plenty of room to move around. Whether you're hiring a trainer or going for the VIP membership, it's absolutely worth every penny. When I was completely new in the fitness industry Kristian was my guide and the one who completely changed my life for the better. He always made me push really hard and I kept being inspired to continue, and never ever give up. He helped me with my diet as well and in the beginning I wasn't doing great but I felt safe enough to tell him the truth when I "failed". We found solutions so I would be on point. When I actually followed his diet plan the results came short after. He also made the sessions a lot of fun so I always looked forward to the gym. I'll forever be grateful for Kristian. read more

I started to come to this gym a while back when my brother introduced me to it. Pretty cool business for trainers and clients. Rather than the trainers only getting a percentage of a session, they get to keep the entirety of it and pay just a base rent. For someone who has managed a gym for over 5 years back in my younger days, I see this as an excellent business model. It strengthens the relationship of both the trainer and clients, because it is no longer the gym that holds them accountable, but rather each other. read more

I had the chance to work out at this gym because of Irene. The private gym has lot of equipment and is impeccably clean. Irene stands out as the best trainer in OC. She has been instrumental in my physical journey, guiding me with nutrition, helping me lose weight, and tone my body. Beyond that, she supports me in mental health, showing genuine care and asking about her clients' well-being. I've not only lost weight but also gained a sisterly bond through our sessions. If you're in search of an excellent personal trainer, Irene is here for you. read more

One of the owners, Scarlette, is one amazing individual. The light that shines through her is felt by anyone who is surrounding her. I've watched her grow heavily in this facility. The way she continues to care for the trainers and her clients is so naturally genuine. There are a few other trainers whose energy speaks volumes as well & with the connection of this community, it's hard not feel uplifted. She is one of a kind. Don't get me started on other people in that gym though. read more

I don't recommend this gym at all. The OWNER Scarlett was rude to me since the beginning. You would think she would be nice and welcoming to her customers, I guess sometimes people let their egos get in the way of their job. I talked to the trainer I had and she said she had the same complaints about Scarlett from another female member. Also saw her be super rude to one of her employees. Complete lack of maturity at this establishment as stated in a previous 1 star review. Save your money and go elsewere. Gym full of massive egos and rude people. Not PTSD friendly at all read more

I have been training with Madeline for some time now and she is the most experienced and knowledgeable trainer. Madeline has helped me with customized workout routines (even on days we don't meet so I can follow ), meal prep plans/recommendations in order to stay on track with my fitness goals . If you are looking to better yourself physically and mentally Irene is the person for you. read more

So, how should I begin? Just like everyone who had a bad experience at this gym, I was being tricked by their "too good to be true" Instagram posts. After browsing and choosing the available PTs on their Insta, I decided to go with my second PT option, Maddy. Since the first one never replied to me. Everything went fine at first until I found out how my PT was being dishonest with me. I feel betrayed and immediately wanting to end the sessions with her. Now, when the question of refund kicks in, everyone becomes greedy and shows their true being. I wanted to end in good terms. I haven't even started, not even half into my sessions and were begging her to refund me, even if it's just a partial one. She refused stating the policy of nonrefundable deposits. I call this bs since the first month should be more understandable about refunding since not everyone will have a great experience with their PT. Special circumstances should definitely be consider. Especially with my situation. I wanted to end right away and barely used 1 out of 8 sessions. But well, guess I was dumb enough to let this gym and their PT played me dirty. Big life lesson has been learned. Lost a pretty big amount of hard-working money to this place. So please be careful everyone. Choose your gym and PT carefully. Not everything you see on social media is true. Research first! PLEASE, PLEASE READ every single damn page of the contract before signing anything. Also, be aware, this gym will charge you a 10% tax even though l the payment is made through Venmo or Zelle. You don't even receive an actual receipt of how the charge was made with the tax or a copy of the contract. So.. Are they even filing taxes correctly? Shady huh... read more

This is by far the best decision I could have ever made to improve my overall health. There are just no words to express how much I appreciate Natalie as my trainer, she has gone above and beyond to help me meet my goals both personally and professionally. Let me explain, I am dental hygienist and as we all know our jobs can lead to some pretty bad aches and pains due to the repetitiveness of our tasks. With her help, Natalie has shown me the proper exercises to build strength and improve mobility, ensuring the longevity of my career. In only a matter of months I have been successful in eliminating aches and pains, increased my energy and above all else gained some much needed confidence. I have enjoyed this process so much I wanted share with my colleagues the tremendous benefits resistance training can provide for our field. I asked Natalie to help me with a project to help educate and without hesitation she was on board. What can I say she's the DAMN BEST ! I've never had a private trainer in a private facility but the young man that I'm working with Is really putting me to work. One thing I love about working with him is he doesn't just focus on the weights he has a holistic approach which includes food intake, weights and mindset with feedback. After tough workouts he regularly checks in to make ensure training was good and I'm on track with my macros, he is accessible and responds in a timely fashion with any questions or concerns. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of our time together in the gym and my new found discipline on food I take. I highly recommend him. I gave 4 stars because it's far for me but worth it. read more

There are so many good things I could say about this place. If you're looking for a friendly place to workout if you're looking for a trainer who actually cares this is definitely a place you should try. Unprofessional. I set up a early morning first appointment with a personal trainer. The trainer never showed up nor did the trainer make the personal effort to follow up on why he didn't show up. Unprofessional business place and I cannot recommend this place to anyone, especially first timers. You are at risk of being "dissed" even if you have a confirmed time. Save yourself the stress and worry. There are plenty of other gyms and trainers in the area that will treat you better than this place will. Steer clear of this place. You will thank me. read more

I was fortunate enough to book a few sessions with Natalie over my holiday break. I wanted to focus on learning how to navigate the weight room solo. Natalie was phenomenal- she met me where I was at and challenged me to push more weight and correct my form every session. Natalie knows exactly what she is doing and makes modifications for your best fitness results as she trains you. I wish I didn't live so far, otherwise, I'd be training with Natalie regularly. It's been 4 months working out with my trainer, Alfredo and let me tel you why I won't be leaving anytime soon. Alfredo has taught me core strength, proper formation, and most importantly, he has taught me to never give up on myself. By week 5 I was already seeing results with him and continue to amaze myself everyday with new muscles I see in the mirror. First off, I would like to say that Self Made Training Facility- Costa Mesa is the most aestethically pleasing gym I have ever stepped foot into. Secondly, every single trainer who is part of the Self Made Brand is amazing and the best of the best. However, each one is not going to be the best "fit" for each client. I have always been athletic, as I played high school and college volleyball, but, once I decided on joining the Marine Corps I decided it was time to find a trainer who would test my mental strength when my body wants to give out. I was not going to hire a trainer until I found the right one; I am so lucky and blessed to have found my trainer, Erica Asauskas because 1. She is a Marine so she knows what to make me do in order for me to succeed, 2. She genuinely cares about each and every client, 3. I lost 6.2% body fat in my first month of working with her, this list could go on and on but, my Yelp review has already reached a long length by now, but, long-story short, START YOUR TRAINING WITH ERICA ASAUSKAS BECAUSE IT WILL BE THE BEST DECISION YOU'LL EVER MAKE IN REGARDS TO YOUR HEALTH/FITNESS. read more

Never wrote a review in my life but I feel compelled to do it for the first time about my trainer and SMTF. My trainer Evan Nelson told me about this place when he joined the team. I went to check it out and he gave me a tour of the facilities and the meal plans. The moment you get in you can feel the motivation around you and that is key to accomplish your goals. The space is the definition of "hip". Simply spotless, amazing training machines that you won't find in a regular gym and cool music. All for you to feel great and work hard. Training with Evan has been one of the best decisions I made in a long time. Since I started with him at SMTF only a month ago I dropped my body fat % and I feel that my body is changing for the better. Evan is constantly pushing me to the limit and it really feels great after each session. I would recommend him in a heartbeat! read more

I absolutely love how intimate the Self Made Training Facility is. Everyone is so nice, the equipment is great and it is always super clean! Nessa is my personal trainer and I honestly couldn't imagine anyone better. I started out with her "Booty Bootcamp" class a few years back and now we do private sessions. Every time I come in she has a workout personalized exactly for what my body needs, she sends me workouts for days that I am not able to come in and she helps me with my meal planning. She goes above and beyond for not only me but all of her clients and it truly shows. Not to mention her amazing charisma and personality, she is constantly making me laugh and pumping me up during our sessions and it helps me so much! I 20/10 recommend Nessa to anyone looking to improve their overall health and fitness. read more

I am not a really a "gym guy", so I must say I was intimidated walking into this place! I was also a little mesmerized! The attention to detail is remarkable, and upon meeting the staff you know why. Warm greetings, genuine kindness, and a shared desired to "do work" whilst you're there! I've taken a few boxing lessons around town, but when I linked up with JB it was fireworks! And now suddenly I'm meeting really cool peeps in and out of classes who make it click even more. I have been coming here for almost half a year now and I just wanted to give my trainer, Nancy Do, a freakin 10 out of 10!!!!! She is amazing and I would highly recommend her. Nancy genuinely cares about her clients and will ask how you are feeling. She customizes your plan based off of your personal goals because everyone is different. I've never had a great relationship with food or the gym but Nancy is able to help me with that. I have always worked out but I never knew what I was doing and had no confidence. Nancy was able to teach me proper form and basic moves before moving up to more difficult compound moments such as the squat or deadlift. Nancy also customizes your macros based off of your body and goals. I've bumped up in calories to gain mass while my girl friend, who also had Nancy as a trainer, went down in calories to loose fat. I definitely see an improvement in my posture, my confidence in the gym, and my strength. I can see the difference in my strength when I go rock climbing and my overall body seems to be looking better. As for the facility itself, its nice because there are only trainers and clients. There is no gym membership. You only have the fee to pay your trainer. It's not too often that I feel that I have to wait for a machine or certain dumbbells although I wish there were another set of lighter weights for weak people like me. Downside is that the parking lot is quite small, fitting only about 15 cars. I like to park on the street around the corner to avoid the parking lot altogether. Some of the equipment is run down or broken...but most things are working well. There are three restrooms in this facility and there doesn't seem to be a water fountain so make sure to bring your own water. read more
