The Amazon community Banana stand is just that, a banana stand within the Amazon building lobby that gives out bananas for free. No Amazon affiliation required. A very nice gesture, especially for those who enjoy bananas and/or haven't had anything to eat and don't want to purchase anything. The whole thing seems to be some sort of corporate gesture to seem genuine and motivating, but it's a bit weird to me and comes off like the equivalent to the often meme'd about "pizza party" that jobs give. I say this because they have the "Banistas", the people who hand out the bananas as extra friendly, which isn't itself bad, but it seems forced. It seems like they're instructed to be really energetic and engaging when it really isn't called for. The fact that they have a title and "bananagers" that bring up more when the bananas get low. (Yes that's the real title for these people). So no, I'm not hating on it, get yourself a banana. I'm just a bit leery of over cheery corporate efforts like these. read more

While hustling to the SLUT (that's South Lake Union Train/Transport you naughty-minded Yelpers!), I noticed this bright yellow trailer. It was filled to the brim with fresh yellowish-green, organic bananas. There were more bananas here than I see at my local CostCo! Amazon brings in this banana stand for not only its employees but also the local community and bypassers almost on the daily. I gotta say, I adore the bright colors because they bring a smile to my face--even on the gloomiest of Seattle days. The folks behind the counter are also pleasant and welcoming. There are dog treats and a water bowl for pups on their daily walk. Oh and did I say a bubble machine for the ambiance?! Have you checked out the Amazon Banana Stand yet? Maybe you weren't sure why Amazon has a random stand in the middle of SLU with two full-time people called "Banistas" giving out free bananas? Yeah, I have heard from an unofficial (but trustworthy) source that even Amazonians were confused when the Banana Stand first launched, since the company never officially announced this new offering. On the first day, folks thought it was some Dole promo, since they only seem to supply the Stand with high-quality Dole bananas, not some generic knock-off like Chiquita. Then, after a few days of the Banana Stand still being there, they thought it was Amazon Fresh ending and they were giving out all of their leftover inventory, which totally makes sense why Amazon Fresh would have failed if all they had in stock were bananas. After realizing that the Banana Stand was here to stay, Amazonians probably started wondering how they too could get a sweet gig as a "Banista," who literally does nothing but stand there making sure no one takes too many bananas. They don't even hand you a banana most of the time. You have to take one yourself! This would probably be my biggest complaint about the Banana Stand. I would have docked a star for this alone, but I'm just trying to finish this review since I'm super sleepy from the all-you-can-eat banana bonanza I just experienced in the past 30 minutes. Or perhaps you're concerned about all the radiation in bananas, since I have heard they are one of the most genetically modified fruits? I did some research and found that you need to eat 5,000,000 bananas for the radiation to affect you. That's only 1,000+ bananas per day, assuming you eat bananas every day for 80 years of your life. Whew, better budget those bananas accordingly. Now that I've answered all of your pressing questions about the Banana Stand, I suggest you head on over to SLU during M-F 9-4pm working hours (Banistas are people, too.) and grab yourself one or a few perfectly yellow, no spots bananas. If anything, just do it out of spite for the Bezos empire and say that today you were able to help drive down Amazon's profit margin. read more

I absolutely love this banana stand. It's more reliable than my ability to choose ripe bananas at the market. I used to just walk by it a lot thinking it was a pretty neat and awesome service to the community, but I never partook in any of the free bananas. My breaking point was when I bought another bad batch of bananas at the market that I couldn't eat even after a week. I know what you're thinking - how can you get bad bananas? They're so easy to pick. If they're yellow, they're ripe, green not ready, and brown is banana bread time. Well, they were green/yellowish and needed to ripen a little but I swear after a week they still weren't ripe enough and were still fibrous in my mouth... blehck. I didn't want to go back to the market to get another batch so I cracked and finally decided to try one from the banana stand. It was ripe and delicious. I was sold to quit buying bananas :))) If you live or work nearby, it truly is an awesome benefit. I rarely need to rely on my inept ability to purchase bananas at the market anymore.
