Yorkies of Houston - My sick dog dying and Yorkies of Houston having ZERO regard to how he was doing.

Yorkies of Houston

I adopted a puppy from Ekiria this last month and wanted to provide a review of my experience…read more ACA versus AKC: I had a few miscommunication issues with Ekiria. I thought I was getting an AKC registered puppy but it turns out it is ACA registered, which has less stringent standards. Ekiria suggested they do offer AKC registered dogs after I raised this but never really said much else about it. Not really an issue unless you want to show your dog or believe ACA dogs are not as well bred as AKC dogs but make sure you ask. If you don't know the difference between AKC and ACA, then ignore this portion of the review. Breed standard: In my opinion, my puppy also has a really short tail. AKC standards for Yorkshire Terriers call for tail docking but mine has a little tiny nub of a tail. It kind of looks like a rabbit tail, which is cute but definitely not the breed standard. Maybe it will grow but I suspect it will not. Unfortunately, I never really noticed it until I got him home and did some maintenance grooming over the weekend. The groomer groomed my puppy's tail fur to be twice the length of his actual tail, which further contributed to me not realizing the tail was so short. Again, not a congenital issue, just a breed standard issue, which you can certainly ignore as well if it doesn't matter to you. Experience: Ekiria was professional, though there were some instances where she came across as condescending, especially when I raised questions about AKC registration and the tail docking. I don't believe that was her intention but that doesn't change the perception. Overall though, I thought the adoption experience was generally positive. She worked with me so that I could meet both parents and provided quite a few items as part of the adoption, which is especially helpful to new dog owners. My other yorkie (11 year-old AKC registered dog from another breeder who no longer breeds dogs) passed away from cancer quite recently, so I actually had all the items already. It's nice to have backups though, and she also provided a few outfits for the pup. Health Guarantee: I've also never come across a breeder that provides a health guarantee, much less a ten-year health guarantee. Not sure what is actually covered, though I assume it's just congenital issues. I'm glad to have the guarantee but I'm not sure whether making a claim will be a smooth process or not. I would love to hear from someone who has had issues but at the same time, I'm hoping that no one has ever had to make a claim. My pup seems really healthy, and I'm hoping he stays that way. Because of the miscommunication issues and my puppy's rabbit tail, I'm only giving four stars, though I will certainly come back and update the review if my puppy's tail does magically grow to become proportionate to his body.

The entire experience was pleasant. I called, told them the puppy I was interested in, and drove down the next morning to take a look. The puppy was exactly as I'd expected it to be--cute, fluffy, healthy, and happy! I brought him home that morning. To address the concern of whether or not they are breeder: Jon and Jimmie used to breed Yorkies, but stopped several years ago. Now, they operate as a broker only. They sell Yorkies for longtime friends. I can not confirm to whether or not the puppies come from puppy mills, but what I can say is that our Yorkie was healthy, well cared for, well-marked, and adapted extremely well. Our puppy did have some hypoglycemia issues (common in these little babies). I was able to reach out to Jimmie by email, then phone, to discuss. While our puppy is just fine now, Jimmie was genuinely concerned and really helpful. She asked that I let her know if there are any systemic issues (i.e. liver shunt) found so that the dog's parents would not be bred again to prevent this genetic defect. Fortunately, no liver shunt was found.

I've taken him to the vet and he has a great bill of health. Thank you so much for providing our family with another great pup! We named him Thanos :)
