Loveeeee this bakery for the salty bread, but did you know they also have amazing cronuts? I really want to try one of everything. There are a number of locations around Rochester that sell Amazing Grains, which I honestly love about Rochester, so it was really nice to finally get to visit the bakery. It is located in an area with warehouses near the river, in an unassuming location that made me double check that I was in the right place. Once inside, they have racks of baked bread, display cases of pastries, and even a cooler with other products. They were incredibly busy, but polite. Highly recommend a visit! read more

This charming bakery makes top shelf breads, cookies, croissants and sticky buns and English muffins. I would get cinnamon rolls elsewhere. While they look big & beautiful I have found that the cinnamon has a minimal presence. The consistency and flavor of their cinnamon rolls is not appealing to me. Runny drippy frosting is a turnoff and the flavor doesn't do the roll any favors. There's plenty else to live there- like the ginger molasses cookies that take me back to my childhood. I was in charge of my niece's baby shower and ordering a cake from Rochester in Orange County California was a huge task. I couldn't find someone to make the fondant for our cake and theme of Peter Rabbit so a friend suggested to find someone local after weeks of search I found Laura Gilbert here right in my neighborhood. She did a fantastic job and wrapped my package so I could travel to California with it. I can't say enough about how lovely she was to deal with . Very good fresh bread, absolutely an improvement over Flour City in price. We got a loaf of their Salty Bread at their stall in the Public Market, which was busy but working through the line efficiently. The bread was chewy and soft and, true to its name, covered in salt. My family and I shared it, and we all found it pleasant, if a little lacking in flavor--nothing that couldn't be fixed by dipping it in oil and herbs! Ok most of us in the Monroe County area have had "Salty Bread" but they do so much more than that. Unfortunately living in the city I have found only a handful of places that keep there bread available. I decided to take a trip up to Fairport and check it out. Just an FYI hours are Thursday-Saturday make sure to check the website/call/social media outlets. Now they were closed for six weeks as they were updating somethings and it's a nice retail space my nav gave good directions but driving down the alley I could not get thru and had to back up and park elsewhere so do yourself a favor and be aware of that. I wanted some bread, granola and whatever else they had. So I picked up a Farmhouse White and a Classic Sourdough, some pastries, granola and some maple pecan butter. Now I saw the board that states what breads are available, pastries and etc. Here's the rub.. I wanted just classic sourdough (now I had no idea sourdough had a vegan and non vegan base ok my bad) I had to ask staff here where's the "regular sourdough" all they had out was Rosemary, some other Marble Rye and etc. Than the staff kind of chided me saying it was there. It was not... Listen I told you three times what's here.. whatever it was annoying. I apologized but she really should have...than I asked for the Pain de Levain hoping I could get some.. sure I can but it's frozen.. again whatever. Now they make bread for retail and other things. Now having a retail space what I don't understand is why you only have one bread slicer? Why do I mention this.. is that me and another person had to wait to have their breads cut. I had two and the other person did too.. the one person helping another person had to deal with all the bread so we're waiting for our stuff. Seriously you can't get another bread slicer or take it in the back and do it? Than trying to cash out with Apple Pay.. I still had to whip out my card. Yes all of this is first world problems but annoying. They make a fabulous product but I don't need to be chided by staff. Will I come back maybe.. but since I can pick up some of the breads at the public market I may just stick with that. If it was a little closer I would visit a bit more, but who knows but I best make sure I have other things to do in the area. 4.5 outta 5 Staff 3.5-5 They have a small parking lot. Still a great place for a number of wonderful items. Bread seems to be their speciality, is always done very well. They seem to have widened their variety of other specialty items, plenty to try! Most of the non-bread items we've tried have been ok. We found the biscuit to be more of a sort of croissant dough recipe made into a biscuit. Worth stopping by to try a few things. read more

The baked goods are extraordinarily delicious! I am a fan of the savory croissants & the salt bread. Whenever I have gone in, there always seems to be a line (which I guess that is a good sign?). It's a bit chaotic, I feel like I have been "cut in line" during multiple visits because there is no clear indication on where the line for ordering actually starts. First time here, decided to visit due to the high ratings and good reviews. When we arrived there were several people in and out of the small shop. This place seems very popular. With high expectations going in, I didn't expect that we wouldnt like any of the items we purchased. Tried their salty bread, which seems to be their claim to fame. I was surprised how oily it was and that it will only last one day. They give you instructions on how to freeze and thaw which was much appreciated. It was decent especially if you made a sandwich with it but it didn't knock my socks off. It's decently soft which is nice but I had a hard time getting past the oily ness. It just felt heavy and extra unhealthy to me. Like the fried dough's of loafed bread minus the taste bud satisfaction of confectionery sugar. Purchased a pistachio muffin. Super dense. The denseness really turned me off. I felt like I was eating the consistency of play dough. Again just really heavy. Flavor was decent if the texture had been there. We split the cinnamon roll. We each took a couple bites and unanimously decided to throw the rest out. Very disappointed. The icing didn't taste great, the texture was not very soft, on the dryer side. Okay, yes, we went for the salty bread, but we left with way more. A little bit of everything tucked away in an unseeingly bakery by the Erie Canal. There's nothing like the smell of fresh bread. As we walked in, we were greeted with a prompt "Hello!". I definitely shopped with my stomach here but how could you not? Assuming everyone knows by now that the Amazing Grains salty bread is delicious, we'll jump over raving about that part and hit on some of their lesser known tasty (and slightly less tasty) treats. First off, salty bread makes for some fantastic croutons. The kids and I cracked open the package to "just try one" and proceeded to eat half the bag before making it home. My wife suggested they might even pair well with lettuce, but I'm skeptical. On the sweet side we tried the following: - chocolate croissant: the teenager LOVES chocolate croissants, and this was a good one with excellent flakey layers - French Toast Muffin: weird and not for me. It had no sweetness at all, and the bacon on the outside wasn't crispy and made it hard to eat - Coconut Chocolate Scone: the little one devoured this, even eating the coconut which was perfectly toasted and tasty - Cinnamon Roll: Another one to pass on, as there are better treats here and better cinnamon rolls in town - Chocolate Chip Cream Pie: Hands down the winner. I cannot overstate how delicious this was. We split it (unevenly) between 4 of us (because I cheated), and all agreed that this is going to become and every-visit treat. So in summary, do a 5000 calorie workout then go stuff your face with salty bread and cookie sandwiches. Maybe you can have a nice crouton covered salad for dinner to make up for it. read more

I had no clue about this place until I was at the Fairport Public Market with my Mom and she mentioned that her friend loves the Salty Bread from Amazing Grains- which happened to have a spot at the Market. Well, as soon as she mentioned it and we had decided to get a loaf the saleswoman, Lisa (who is soo nice!), said she just sold her last loaf- BUT- not to worry that another staff member would be back shortly with more. In the 10 m minutes it took the staff member to get back there was a line of customers waiting to buy Salty Bread. It did not disappoint! Salty Bread tops the list of things everyone should try at least once! The store is conveniently located off of Turk Hill by the canal as well and is a great little shop. My life was literally transformed when I tried the salt bread from Amazing Grains. It was the perfect combination of light fluffy insight, crispy outside and salt on top. Oh my god, it is heavenly. One time, I bought a loaf and ate half of it on the way home. It was only a 5 minute drive! It's even better when you put it in the toaster oven for a few minutes. Amazing Grains will tell you that if you don't eat the bread on the same day you purchase it, you can freeze it. Then, you just pop it in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes and it comes out tasting warm and fresh. I'd also like to give a shout out to the delicious cronut. I've never had a cronut before. For those who don't know, it's a combination of a croissant and a donut. It's a flaky outside and soft, gooey inside. There were long lines for cronuts in NYC in 2013, but now you can buy them at Amazing Grains! Also, if you like things that taste like lemon - I'd highly recommend the lemon poppyseed scone. The only downside is that you will have to unbutton your pants after eating there. They probably use SO MUCH butter when they make their baked goods. But it's well worth it in my humble opinion. read more

This hidden jem is well worth the hunt. Right near the bridge where Turk Hill crosses the Erie Canal, there is a small sign at the entrance for Amazing Grains. Once you turn into the lot, veer left and drive all the way to the back. Down the end of the alleyway, you will see a large bakery sign on the left corner of the building. The baked good are scrumptious, the breads are tasty, and the service is warm and inviting. Their salty bread....wow. It's crispy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside with the perfect amount of salt sprinkled on top. The apple croissant and spinach and cheese croissant were flaky and soft with the right amount of filling with each bite. Looking forward to making grilled cheese sammies with the farmhouse white bread using the parmesan and pesto butter of fatty goodness. Oh! The hunter rye is a hearty sourdough loaf covered with lots of seeds and has bits of currants inside. One of the ladies was very friendly and helpful with suggestions for our first trip there. This place feel like a secret. It's located behind this industrial building. When we arrived the place was packed, so you know it's going to be good. They have several different treats behind the counter like flatbreads, large pretzels, cookies, and a few pastries. I think a lot of people come for the bread and the English muffins. We never heard of this place until we had their salt bread at Branca and then their giant pretzel at Unter Biergarten - they were both awesome. It was my mission to visit this place. As others have explained it is hidden away and though I live on the east side this part of Fairport is a bit remote but it is worth the effort. I have now stopped in twice and both times I bought their salt bread - delicious (and it can be frozen and reheated if you can resist not eating the whole loaf in one sitting - which is tempting). On my second visit I also bought their version of pain au chocolat and an almond croissant - different and wonderful. Reasonable prices for the quality.
