There is nothing worse than a bride dealing with delays on outfits and an unresponsive designer during the month of her wedding - let alone the week of. The owner, Nim, was probably the most difficult vendor to deal with throughout the entire wedding process and brought me to tears in the few days leading up to my wedding. I bought 4 outfits from her: a ceremony lehenga with (what was supposed to be) a matching men's sherwani, a reception lehenga, and a simple pre-event men's kurta with vest. Here is an honest and extensive summary of my experience. The bad truly outweighed anything good about my experience of dealing with Amara Couture (detailed ratings below).
*The good*
Her showroom is great and really gives you that "bridal" experience. My bridal outfits came out great after alterations from her tailor in Mississauga (who is an angel) - the fabric was great, embroidery on point, and they came in 1 month before my event dates, leaving time for alterations. Everyone LOVED my outfits, and to be honest so did I. As for price point, she is very reasonable and will work with you and your family to get you something that fits in your budget. At first point of contact, Nim will put all your worries at ease and you will feel comfortable dealing with her instantly, making a whole bunch of promises as to what will happen if the outfits don't come in on time. In the end, I ended up paying just a small portion for the kurta/vest and she did not ask me for the rest, but I paid 100% of everything else.
*The bad*
I don't think my outfits would have come out the way I wanted if I didn't constantly text/call Nim and nag her throughout the entire process and get my planner to do so as well. She has the worst communication skills - her writing skills via text are not comprehendible and she rarely picked up phone calls. At one point earlier in the process she had sent me a picture of how my blouse was turning out, not noticing that she had the neckline all wrong (she did fix this). I had also added a belt with one outfit, which she actually forgot about and I didn't get until couple days before the event (and it was the wrong size). Now for my husband's outfits - this is when everything just went downhill.
For weeks, she kept promising that the sherwani and kurta would be in in the "next few days", but they never turned up (in fact she had lied months earlier saying that the kurta is ready and is going to be shipped with my lehengas, but that wasn't the case). It's now 1 month before the wedding and she is UNRESPONSIVE. We later came to find out (from another source) that she went on vacation to France, without letting us know. She gets back from vacation, now 2 weeks before the wedding, and she starts blaming all delays on Ramadan, saying that she did not realize that it's Ramadan and things are slower back in India because of it. Finally the sherwani (not the kurta) comes 1 week prior to the wedding - and once my husband tried it on, the arm length was way too short. In addition, the whole reason we went custom for the groom's outfit is so that it matched the lehenga. The reds for the pants, pagri and dupatta did not match each other, let alone the lehenga. The dupatta she sent was HIDEOUS. She explained that the dupatta is ready-made and this is the only style it comes in. Well damn if I wanted a ready-made dupatta I would have gone on a search myself, right? She gave us another dupatta with the kurta delivery, which was equally as hideous (it was just velvet material). The pagri, which she said was going to be loose fabric, was a pre-made one. We had hired someone to tie the pagri, and we weren't able to get our money back for that. I CRINGE at the pictures we took with these outfits, because there are 4 different shades of red in our outfits. Now for the kurta for the pre-event on Thursday - "it's going to come in on Monday", Monday comes, "it will be in tomorrow and if not I will personally deliver it on Wednesday" (i.e. the day before my pre-event). I called her everyday leading up to that Wednesday. Wednesday comes, the outfit gets delivered in the late afternoon, BY AN UBER DELIVERY!!!
There were many more lies in between that I did not capture above. After my wedding she sent me a text apologizing but at the same time not taking any responsibility. It was one of those "I'm sorry but this and this happened", which on top of all the stress that she caused, this "apology" did not seem sincere and was in fact quite distasteful.
