While wandering around Kreuzberg with my American visitors, we happened by Amar and decided to check it out, namely due in part to the extensive selection of vegetarian dishes. After an initial rough start (sitting at a recently-cleared spot outside, then being told by another customer that she was waiting for it, then being seated elsewhere, and having a misunderstanding where our server thought we'd ordered when we hadn't), we finally were able to order our food. The upside of this delay in service was that we were served the tasty pre-food fruit juice multiple times. My companions ordered Chicken Tikki Masala and the Gemischte Vorspeisenplatte. Meanwhile, I settled on the Piddi Channa, seeing as I am a huge lover of chickpeas, and it was one of the few vegan items on the menu. When our food arrived, I was a bit disappointed to see that my otherwise vegan dish had cheese sprinkled on top. Not wanting to cause any trouble (or wait longer for a new dish to be prepared), and because the amount wasn't too much, I overlooked it, choosing to eat my food anyway. The dairy aside, the dish was delicious, as were the free appetizers brought to us by who I can only assume was the manager or owner. We also ordered garlic naan, which was alright, although the garlic had a strange flavouring. All in all, it was an enjoyable, filling, and moderately-priced food. Since I have a curry sensitivity, I don't find myself eating Indian often, but for a nice spot outside (complete with plenty of people-watching), this is a place I would suggest. My friend and I were in the area and decided to try Amar given that it seemed like a popular place to go on a Saturday night. I enjoyed spending a couple of hours here; the service was really relaxed and our meals were what you'd expect from a reputable Indian restaurant. The chicken biriyani and chicken himalaya were both solid rice dishes. In the future I would come back with a few more friends; this restaurant seems more like a weekend dinner and drinks spot before heading to the clubs than a weeknight affair. read more

The biggest issue here was our garlic naan. I'm sure it was good, I mean... Its consistency and softness was great. But I couldn't taste the garlic... Maybe, just maybe, because it was infused in weed. Yes, you heard me. It tasted pot. It smelled like it, tasted like it and the smell stuck to the fingers several hours later. Just like I would've had a blunt myself. No exaggeration. Now to be fair, it's not in the actual recipe. I'm not sure what did and didn't happen in the kitchen, but the server definitely had a joint before he came in with the bread. No doubt. Worse than my food experience in Amsterdam, but a throwback to my visit nevertheless. One must not forget that this server was in a good mood, swift and pleasant. I give you that, my friend. Roll on. I've been through this place a lot of times and found it really appealing, now I understand that's it actually only a look and maybe a catchy tourist place. I've been there with four friends, they took a plate for four people with naan, and I took a "snack" which was composed of "marinated" potatoes, with rice on side (fractured too). We also all took some cocktails. The service was very average, first pretty nice, it became quickly hard to catch the waiter. First we had to call them like 3 times to order, then I actually had to go to them to order a drink, and finally they ended up completely forgetting us. They were nice and smily, but just not very efficient at some point. The plate for four was just way too small and my friends regretted not to have taken it for two instead of four, even more since it costed 17€. My experience was probably even worse. I wanted a small thing and no too expensive so I only looked in the snacks, the problem is that all of them except two were fried. The two others were "marinated". Being celiac, I had no other choice than to choose a marinated one, which I didn't really care about in the first place. The thing is that 15 minutes later, came an amazing plate of... fried potatoes. One of my friends who was german then explained to the waiter that since I was unable to eat gluten this wasn't right for me and that it was written "marinated" on the menu and not fried for this one so that they should just take it back to the kitchen and probably let me order something not fried.. 5 minutes later came another water (obviously the chief) with the exact same plate. He claimed that I ordered that and now I had to take it, that I should have asked before and that "anyway" there is no gluten in this fried plate. Since I had no other choice and no other thing to eat I ate a few potatoes of this plate, but I really really doubt that this was true, which is I think a big deal. I don't blame restaurant which doesn't have gluten free options, but why put marinated when it's fried and everything else on the menu that are fried are truly noted as so ? Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this place, either for the service, nor for the drink (which were pretty bad too) and the food. There are far better places to go around there. read more

I've been here twice for lunch and always had a good experience. Each time I was with one companion and we had two currys, a big salad, rice and naan for less than 10eur each. The second time, we were given free mango drinks before the meal and free mango-berry dessert thingies afterwards. The chicken korma is creamy and delicious with nuts and dried currants. The lamb vindaloo has a real kick to it, which is rare in Berlin! And the chicken tikka masala came out on a sizzling fajita-style platter and had a really lovely flavor. The service is always attentive, but they need to figure out how to block the door in cold weather...it kept blasting us when the door was opened, to the point we had to put our coats on. Also, what's up with opening the cellar door such that the bathrooms are blocked and customers have to dangerously try to circumvent it? Really terrible experience. Food bland, prices average for the area, but the drinks are super expensive and the service is just awful, even for Europe, even for Berlin, even for anybody anywhere, this is really, really, awful service. First example: three of us go to eat and the salad they bring us with the meal is two sprigs and half a soggy tomato; I ask the manager if we cannot have a proper salad, he says something like, the salad is just a complement, you're not meant to actually be counting on getting a real salad. Ohhhkay. And although it was the middle of the day and we were almost the only ones there they could not get our drink order correct, twice. I think we waited half an hour for a diet cola and an apfelschorle. Second example (don't ask why I went back again) with a large group. We'd made reservations for 15 or so. As our party started to arrive it was apparent that they had not actually made enough space for us, and so ordered a mother and her young daughter (maybe 11 years old), in the middle of their meal, to move to a different table to make room for us, which the poor ladies actually did. Without so much as a hint of apology or regret. I guess they saw the big table and thought we were more important but I was mortified. Later, when the waiter brought out the food, he managed to also knock over the large Maracujaschorle he had just brought out to me. At ,4 liter it was quite the mess and went everywhere, fell in people's laps, swarmed over the table, soaked up napkins, made everything sticky. What was their (his and the manager's) reaction? To toss us a roll of paper towels and walk away. When it became apparent that he had no intention of bringing me another drink I asked him to do so. Twenty minutes later he brought out a small maracujasaftschorle. I told him, sorry, but my last one was nearly full, can you bring me a large one please? (I have worked for years in gastro and know that a server knows the difference between a half-empty drink and one that was nearly full, and I knew he knew full well that I had taken, at most, two sips of that drink.) The expression on his face as he shook his head was so ugly it cannot be described. It was a combination of disgust, resentment and somehow enjoyment that I could not do anything about it because I was hemmed in to my seat. I did not let that stop me and was out of my seat and around the table and standing an inch from his face mere seconds later. The manager came around and tried to tell me to just take a seat again, that there is no problem here. I asked him about my drink and the waiter actually started to argue that I shouldn't get a large one again. In front of us and everybody in the restaurant. The manager saw that I was not sitting down again until they agreed to bring me what they had dropped all over us without so much of a mumbled apology and finally had a different waiter come out to us. 40 minutes after the drink was spilled on me was it replaced, and not at all gracefully or nicely. I cannot unrecommend this place enough. As others have said it is an absolute tourist trap and on top of that they treat you like crap. Really, really awful, terrible place; there are few places that I would boycott for life but this is one of them. Even if you're desperate for food, walk a couple meters further and get a döner, because giving your money to these guys is like slapping their customers yourself. read more

I frequently have cravings for Indian cuisines and so out of hunger and proximity, we ended up at Amar, which is conveniently located near Schlesisches Tor. Having lived in NYC and Seattle, I've eaten some great and not so great indian food, and I would have to rank Amar as one of the poorest excuses for Indian food that I've tasted, I'm afraid. When we arrived there were a few large groups ahead of us, so we were given a guava drink to sip on while we waited. (That was probably the best part of the overall experience) We ordered the Malai Kofta and the Madras Fish, the garlic naan, with a mango lassi - which are would be safe bets for this obviously high traffic, busy location. I would not recommend the malai kofta - as it is more bland and creamy than it should be, making for an unappetizing creamsicle-colored dish. The madras fish came in a flavorful stew, but they used breaded fish filets that when sitting in a stew, creates a strange slimy consistency of the fish, not to mention the fish was chewy and overcooked. Maybe there are some better dishes on the menu, but I'll never know - I won't be back. read more

Es gibt gute und wirklich schlechte Inder in Berlin das Amar gehört für mich auf jeden Fall zu denen, die man besser schließen sollte! Wir waren letzte Woche zu dritt im Amar Kreuzberg und saßen in der Nähe der Toiletten, die man dort auch sehr gut riechen konnte. Extrem angewiedert baten wir um einen neuen Tisch wo uns nur entgegnet wurde, dass die Speisen jetzt schon boniert sind und das es ja kein Uringeruch sondern Reinigungsmittel sei, was wir da riechen. Die Antwort verblüffte uns völlig und wir haben nur die schon servierte Vorspeise gegessen und wollten gehen und die Hauptspeisen nicht mehr essen, da wir persönlich den Appetit verloren haben auf Grund der Toiletten-Atmosphäre und diesem dreisten Spruch des Kellners. Hier hatten wir jedoch die Rechnung ohne den Wirt gemacht der bestand nämlich darauf, dass wir die Speisen zahlen und das wir uns ja da hingesetzt hätten also selbst schuld wären. Wärend der Diskussion stand der Kellner mit genervtem Gesicht vor uns und hatte das Tablett mit dem Essen in der Hand und drängelte wo er denn nun servieren soll! Die Art und Weise wie hier mit Kunden umgegangen wird ist meines Erachtens DAS ALLER LETZTE wir wurden ja auch gewarnt die Finger von den Hühnerfleischgerichten zu lassen, da Freunde von uns hier schon sehr schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht hatten! Vorsorglich haben wir nur vegetarische Gerichte bestellt und mussten diese nach langer Diskussion auch wiklich zahlen, sonst (so wurde uns gedroht) würde man die Polizei holen!
